Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the scrupulous hygiene rules and the restriction of contacts during the lockdown owing to the COVID-19 pandemic affected the rate and severity of surgical site infections (SSI) after vascular exposure in the groin at two Italian University Hospitals.

Methods: Starting from March 2020, strict hygiene measures for protection of health care workers (HCW) and patients from COVID-19 infection were implemented, and partly lifted in July 2020. The main exposure for analysis purposes was the period in which patients were operated.

Objective: Conflicting annual procedure volumes have been endorsed among different watchdog groups and professional societies, obscuring credentialing paradigms. There has been ample focus on surgeon volume to date but less attention on the effect of center volume. Specifically, whether center volume might be a better proxy for high-quality care.

Objective: To investigate the association between hospital volume and failure to rescue (FtR), after open repair (OAR), and endovascular repair (EVAR) of intact abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) among centers participating in the VASCUNET and International Consortium of Vascular Registries.

Summary Of Background Data: FtR (ie, in-hospital death following major complications) is a composite end-point representing the inability to treat complications effectively and prevent death.

Methods: Using data from 8 vascular registries, complication and mortality rates after intact AAA repair were examined (n = 60,273; EVAR-43,668; OAR-16,605).

Objective: To report the early and mid-term outcomes following open surgical conversion (OSC) after failed endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) using data from a multicentric registry.

Methods: A retrospective study was carried out on consecutive patients undergoing OSC after failed EVAR at eight tertiary vascular units from the same geographic area in the North-East of Italy, from April 2005 to November 2019. Study endpoints included early and follow-up outcomes.

Objective: To evaluate early and follow-up outcomes following bilateral use of iliac branch devices (IBD) for aortoiliac endografting and assess the impact of center volume. We used data from the pELVIS international multicentric registry.

Methods: For the purpose of this study, only those patients receiving concomitant bilateral IBD implantation were analyzed.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to present a narrative review on endovascular techniques (ET) for revascularization of the left subclavian artery (LSA) during zone 2 thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) and on risk factors for postoperative stroke following TEVAR procedures.

Methods: Non-systematic search of the literature from the PubMed, Ovid and Scopus databases to identify relevant English-language articles fully published in the period 1 January 2010-1 August 2020.

Results: Current general agreement is that LSA revascularization should be always attempted in the elective setting.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how the COVID-19 pandemic affected urgent and elective thoracic and abdominal aortic surgeries between January-May 2020 and the same period in 2019.
  • Researchers found no significant change in the number of urgent procedures, but there was a notable 35% drop in elective surgeries during the pandemic, especially in countries like Italy.
  • Patients with acute conditions still sought treatment, indicating that while elective cases decreased, emergency cases were managed as per the guidelines, warranting further investigation into the long-term effects of delayed elective surgeries.

Overview of Epstein-Barr-Virus-Associated Gastric Cancer Correlated with Prognostic Classification and Development of Therapeutic Options.

Int J Mol Sci

Gastroenterology, Department of Medical Oncology, Centro di Riferimento Oncologico di Aviano (CRO), IRCCS, 33081 Aviano, Italy.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a deadly disease with poor prognosis that is characterized by heterogeneity. New classifications based on histologic features, genotypes, and molecular phenotypes, for example, the Cancer Genome Atlas subtypes and those by the Asian Cancer Research Group, help understand the carcinogenic differences in GC and have led to the identification of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-related GC subtype (EBVaGC), providing new indications for tailored treatment and prognostic factors. This article provides a review of the features of EBVaGC and an update on the latest insights from EBV-related research with a particular focus on the strict interaction between EBV infection and the gastric tumor environment, including the host immune response.

Propensity-Matched Comparison of Endovascular versus Open Reconstruction for TASC-II C/D AortoIliac Occlusive Disease. A Ten-Year Single-Center Experience with Self-Expanding Covered Stents.

Ann Vasc Surg

February 2021

Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Department of Cardiac Thoracic and Vascular Sciences, University of Padova, Padova, Italy; Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Cardiovascular Department, University of Trieste Medical School, Trieste, Italy. Electronic address:

Background: To compare endovascular therapy (EVT) using kissing self-expanding covered stents, with open repair (OR) with aortobifemoral bypass (ABF), for reconstruction of the aortic bifurcation in Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus II (TASC-II) C/D aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD).

Methods: A single-center retrospective analysis of patients treated by EVT or ABF for TASC-II C/D AIOD (2009-2018) was carried out. The perioperative risk was quantified by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) scores.

Epstein-Barr virus BART microRNAs in EBV- associated Hodgkin lymphoma and gastric cancer.

Infect Agent Cancer

June 2020

Pediatric Radiotherapy Unit, Centro di Riferimento Oncologico di Aviano (CRO), IRCCS, Aviano, PN Italy.

Background: EBV produces miRNAs with important functions in cancer growth, tumor invasion and host immune surveillance. The discovery of EBV miR-BARTs is recent, and most of their functions are still unknown. Nonetheless, some new studies underline their key roles in EBV-associated malignancies.

Inverted urothelial papilloma of the upper urinary tract: description of two cases with systematic literature review.

Diagn Pathol

April 2020

Pathology Section, Department of Health Sciences, University of Florence, Viale Pieraccini 6, 50139, Florence, Italy.

Background: Inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) of the upper urinary tract is an uncommon benign tumour that occasionally presents as a polypoid mass causing urinary obstruction. Histologically, IUP is characterised by a proliferating urothelium arranged in cords and trabeculae, in continuity with overlying intact epithelium, and extending into the lamina propria in a non-invasive, endophytic manner. Cytological atypia is minimal or absent.

Sleeping beauty genetic screen identifies miR-23b::BTBD7 gene interaction as crucial for colorectal cancer metastasis.

EBioMedicine

August 2019

Division of Molecular Oncology, Department of Translational Research, Centro di Riferimento Oncologico di Aviano (CRO) IRCCS, Italy.

Background: Metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a deadly disease. Identifying locally advanced CRC patients with high risk of developing metastasis and improving outcome of metastatic CRC patients require discovering master regulators of metastasis. In this context, the non-coding part of the human genome is still largely unexplored.

Objectives: The use of synthetic cannabimimetics (SC; "spice" drugs) is increasing, especially among teenagers and young adults. In parallel with this, the number of studies describing intoxication episodes associated with psychotic symptoms in SC users is growing. We present both a systematic review of the related literature and a case report, which seems to highlight the existence of a possible association between SC use and psychosis.

Nicergoline is an ergot alkaloid derivative acting as a neuroprotective agent. In the present investigation, b-wave time-course recovery profiles under both light- and dark-adapted conditions, were studied in order to evaluate the possible effectiveness of nicergoline in the protection of the rabbit retina. Retinal ischaemia was induced by bilateral occlusion of common carotid artery in male rabbit of the Dutch strain.
