Background: Brain injury is common in neonates with complex neonatal congenital heart disease (CHD) and affects neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Objectives: Given advancements in perioperative care, we sought to determine if the rate of preoperative and postoperative brain injury detected by using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and associated clinical risk factors have changed over time in complex CHD.

Methods: A total of 270 term newborns with complex CHD were prospectively enrolled for preoperative and postoperative brain MRIs between 2001 and 2021 with a total of 466 MRI scans.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that delayed brain development in fetuses with d-transposition of the great arteries or hypoplastic left heart syndrome heightens their postnatal susceptibility to acquired white matter injury.

Methods: This is a cohort study across 3 sites. Subjects underwent fetal (third trimester) and neonatal preoperative magnetic resonance imaging of the brain to measure total brain volume as a measure of brain maturity and the presence of acquired white matter injury after birth.

A mother's nutritional choices while pregnant may have a great influence on her baby's development in the womb and during infancy. There is evidence that what a mother eats during pregnancy interacts with her genes to affect her child's susceptibility to poor health outcomes including childhood obesity, pre-diabetes, allergy and asthma. Objective: Central nervous system pathology in multiple sclerosis includes both focal inflammatory perivascular injury and injury to superficial structures, including the subpial region of the cortex, which reportedly exhibits a gradient of damage from the surface inward. We assessed how early in the multiple sclerosis course a "surface-in" process of injury suggesting progressive biology may begin.

Background: Persisting atopic dermatitis (AD) is known to be associated with more serious allergic diseases at later ages; however, making an accurate diagnosis during infancy is challenging. We assessed the diagnostic performance of questionnaire-based AD measures with criteria-based in-person clinical assessments at age 1 year and evaluated the ability of these diagnostic methods to predict asthma, allergic rhinitis and food allergies at age 5 years.

Methods: Data relate to 3014 children participating in the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study who were directly observed in a clinical assessment by an experienced healthcare professional using the UK Working Party criteria.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is proposed to be a neuropsychologically heterogeneous disorder that encompasses two distinct sub-groups, one with executive function (EF) deficits and one with delay aversion (DA). However, such claims have often been based on studies that have operationalized neuropsychological deficits using a categorical approach - using intuitive but rather arbitrary, clinical cut-offs. The current study applied an alternative empirical approach to sub-grouping in ADHD, latent profile analysis (LPA), and attempted to validate emerging subgroups through clinically relevant correlates.

Background: While allergic sensitization and atopic dermatitis (AD) are known to increase the risk for allergic diseases, the impact of different temporal and clinical patterns of sensitization and AD is less well defined.

Epidermolysis Bullosa Pruriginosa: Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) pruriginosa is a rare clinical subtype of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) that is characterized by intense pruritus resulting in hypertrophic, lichenified, prurigo-like plaques and nodules secondary to scratching. The variability in the age of onset, rarity of intact bullae, histologic ambiguities, and close resemblance to other conditions such as acquired inflammatory dermatoses may make diagnosis difficult for this unusual condition, for which fewer than 100 cases have been documented. In this report, we describe 3 cases of EB pruriginosa and review the current literature.

Objective: The current study introduces the Parental Emotional Response to Children Index (PERCI), a new questionnaire specifically designed to measure parents' emotional response to ADHD and related behaviors (delay discounting and delay aversion).

Method: The PERCI was completed by parents of 6- to 14-year-old children with ( n = 126) and without ( n = 160) ADHD.

Results: Factor analysis confirmed five separate subscales with acceptable psychometric properties.

Adolescents with chronic pain are at risk for impairment in their friendships. They miss out on leisure activities, have increased school absence, may have fewer friends, are at an increased risk for victimization, and may be perceived by peers as less likeable. To help determine the source of these problems, the Social Information Processing Model (SIP) was adapted using narrative vignettes to determine if adolescents with chronic pain interpret friendship interactions differently in terms of supportive and nonsupportive behaviors compared to healthy peers.

Epidemiology of child injuries in Uganda: challenges for health policy.
