Northeastern British Columbia is a region of prolific unconventional oil and gas (UOG) activity. UOG activity can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can elevate oxidative stress and disrupt antioxidant activity in exposed pregnant individuals, potentially increasing the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study measured biomarkers of oxidative stress and antioxidant activity in pooled urine samples of 85 pregnant individuals living in Northeastern British Columbia, to analyze associations between indoor air VOCs, oil and gas well density and proximity metrics, and biomarker concentrations.

While there is extensive information about sperm nuclear basic proteins (SNBP) in vertebrates, there is very little information about Arthropoda by comparison. This paper aims to contribute to filling this gap by analyzing these proteins in the sperm of the noble false widow spider (Order Araneae, Family Theridiidae). To this end, we have developed a protein extraction method that allows the extraction of cysteine-containing protamines suitable for the preparation and analysis of SNBPs from samples where the amount of starting tissue material is limited.

Estrogen (17β-estradiol) deficiency post-menopause alters bone homeostasis whereby bone resorption by osteoclasts exceeds bone formation by osteoblasts, leading to osteoporosis in females. We established an in vitro model to examine the consequences of estrogen withdrawal (E2-WD) on osteoclasts derived from the mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line and utilized it to investigate the mechanism behind the enhanced osteoclast activity post-menopause.

Empirical studies of genotype-phenotype-fitness maps of proteins are fundamental to understanding the evolutionary process, in elucidating the space of possible genotypes accessible through mutations in a landscape of phenotypes and fitness effects. Forest soils play a critical role in carbon (C) reservoirs and climate change mitigation globally. Exploring the driving factors of soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration and stability in forests on a large spatial scale can help us evaluate the role of forest soils in regulating C sequestration. Based on SOC quantification and solid-state C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we investigated the SOC concentration and SOC chemical stability (indicated by alkyl-to-O-alkyl ratio and hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic ratio) in top 0-5 and 5-10 cm soils from 65 Chinese natural forest sites and explored their driving factors.

Leaf decomposition varies widely across temperate forests, shaped by factors like litter quality, climate, soil properties, and decomposers, but forest heterogeneity may mask local tree influences on decomposition and litter-associated microbiomes. We used a 24-yr-old common garden forest to quantify local soil conditioning impacts on decomposition and litter microbiology.
