Cachexia, a severe multifactorial condition that is underestimated and unrecognized in patients, is characterized by continuous muscle mass loss that leads to progressive functional impairment, while nutritional support cannot completely reverse this clinical condition. There is a strong need for more effective and targeted therapies for cachexia patients. There is a need for drugs that act on cachexia as a distinct and treatable condition to prevent or reverse excess catabolism and inflammation.

This review discusses the impact of curcumin-an aromatic phytoextract from the turmeric () rhizome-as an effective therapeutic agent. Despite all of the beneficial health properties ensured by curcumin application, its pharmacological efficacy is compromised in vivo due to poor aqueous solubility, high metabolism, and rapid excretion that may result in poor systemic bioavailability. To overcome these problems, novel nanosystems have been proposed to enhance its bioavailability and bioactivity by reducing the particle size, the modification of surfaces, and the encapsulation efficiency of curcumin with different nanocarriers.

The adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC) treatment, for which mitotane (o,p'-DDD) is the drug of choice, still remains a challenge both because of the well-known solubility problems of the drug, and its serious side effects. Mitotane is currently administered as oral tablets. The loading of mitotane into nanocarriers has been suggested as a way to circumvent the low solubility of the drug and its limited oral bioavailability.

In this work, we developed a solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) formulation with (+)-limonene 1,2-epoxide and glycerol monostearate (-SLNs), stabilized with Poloxamer 188 in aqueous dispersion to modify the release profile of the loaded monoterpene derivative. We also evaluated the role of SLNs in lipid peroxidation and cytotoxicity in a spontaneously transformed aneuploid immortal keratinocyte cell line from adult human skin (the HaCaT cell line). For the cell viability assay, the colorimetric 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used.

Currently, a significantly lower temperature (35°C) than initially established (56°C) is indicated as the maximum temperature storage for the commercial reference visceral leishmaniasis (VL) freeze-dried direct agglutination test (FD-DAT). Despite an approximately 50% loss in the number of promastigotes in an FD-DAT batch that expired 7 years earlier, the promastigotes maintained a similar morphology to the equivalent valid batch implying most likely that auto-agglutination, rather than aging, is the main reason for expiry. The substitution of normal saline which was initially recommended for reconstitution, by citrate-saline/formaldehyde (CSF) as an anti-clumping/preservative agent resulted in restoration of validity comparable with that of the freeze-dried original or the liquid direct agglutination test (LQ-DAT) version (Friedman ANOVA test = 1.

Diabetes mellitus, an incurable metabolic disease, is characterized by changes in the homeostasis of blood sugar levels, being the subcutaneous injection of insulin the first line treatment. This administration route is however associated with limited patient's compliance, due to the risk of pain, discomfort and local infection. Nanoparticles have been proposed as insulin carriers to make possible the administration of the peptide via friendlier pathways without the need of injection, i.

Diabetes is a complex disease characterized by hyperglycemia, together with polyuria, polydipsia, and polyphagia. While Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) results from genetic, environmental, or immune dysfunction factors leading to pancreatic β-cell destruction depriving the organism from endogenous insulin, Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by peripheral insulin resistance. Depending on the type of diabetes mellitus and drug mechanism to study, the animal model should be carefully selected among the wide variety of the currently available ones.
