Rhagoletis cerasi (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a major pest of sweet and sour cherries in Europe and parts of Asia. Despite its economic significance, there is a lack of studies on the genetic structure of R. cerasi populations.

Priming is the cellular state in which the harmful effects of abiotic stress factors in plants are hindered by pre-exposure to a stimulus, thus resulting in greater survival. It is becoming increasingly evident that priming techniques (e.g.

Introduction: Epidural bleeding as a complication of catheterization or epidural catheter removal is often associated with perioperative thromboprophylaxis especially in adult reconstructive surgery.
Case Presentation: We report on a case of a 19 years old male athlete that underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, receiving low molecular weight heparin for thromboprophylaxis and developed an epidural hematoma and subsequent cauda equina syndrome two days after removal of the epidural catheter. An urgent magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed an epidural hematoma from the level of L3 to L4.

We investigated the hypothesis that coinheritance of the common A(TA)(n)TAA promoter mutation at the UGT1A1 locus associated with Gilbert syndrome is a risk factor for gallstone formation in a homogeneous adult population, by conducting a case-control study that included 198 adult patients with cholelithiasis and 152 healthy controls both of Greek origin. Three genotypes were found: 7/7 (17.8% in controls and 23.

Most surgeons, ourselves including, use retrograde cardioplegia in numerable operations in cardiac surgery. It is believed to be not only supplementary to antegrade, but also a unique alternative in special complicated cases. Regarding CABGs (coronary artery bypass grafts), many authors advocate its routine use together with antegrade, while others do not suggest it for standard practice.

Occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been reported in patients with chronic hepatitis C who are negative for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg). However, the significance of 'silent' HBV in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is unknown. We investigated 540 subjects for the presence of occult HBV in Greek HCV patients, patients with nonviral liver diseases and healthy donors in an attempt to determine the frequency and importance of this phenomenon.

In order to find out how insulin acts on airway smooth muscle and which mechanisms could be involved, we studied the effect of insulin on contraction induced, first, by KCl and, second, by Acetylcholine (Ach), before and after epithelium removal, and finally in the presence of N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor. Tracheal smooth muscle strips from 24 rabbits, 6 being used for each experiment. Each muscle strip was pretreated with a solution containing either 80 mM KCl or 10(-5) Ach and increasing doses of insulin (range 10(-10)--10(-5) M) in the presence or absence of 10(-4) M L-NAME.
