Ecological variation and anthropogenic landscape modification have had key roles in the diversification and extinction of mammals in Madagascar. Lemurs represent a radiation with more than 100 species, constituting roughly one-fifth of the primate order. Almost all species of lemurs are threatened with extinction, but little is known about their genetic diversity and demographic history.

Background: Awareness of ventilator-induced lung injury contributed to increased use of extracorporeal interventions, but not immediately after injury, before acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) ensues. Our objective was to evaluate the role of venovenous extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) in management of mechanically ventilated swine with smoke inhalation injury and 40% body surface area burns.
Methods: Yorkshire swine (n = 29, 43.

Background And Objectives: Although resection of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) improves survival, factors including race and health insurance are associated with disparities in care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of health insurance on racial disparities in CRLM resection.
Methods: A retrospective study of patients with CRC with synchronous CRLM was performed using the National Cancer Database (2004-2020).

Magnetic reconnection has been commonly reported between the solar wind IMF and the magnetic field of Earth and other planets. A similar phenomenon is expected between Jupiter's magnetosphere and Ganymede's mini magnetosphere inside the Jovian magnetosphere. This article is the first report of a reconnection event in the tail region of Ganymede.

A combined biomaterial and cell-based solution to heal critical size bone defects in the craniomaxillofacial area is a promising alternative therapeutic option to improve upon autografting, the current gold standard. A shape memory polymer (SMP) scaffold, composed of biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone) and coated with bioactive polydopamine, was evaluated with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from adipose (ADSC), bone marrow (BMSC), or umbilical cord (UCSC) tissue in their undifferentiated state or pre-differentiated toward osteoblasts for bone healing in a rat calvarial defect model. Pre-differentiating ADSCs and UCSCs resulted in higher new bone volume fraction (15.

Background: Secondary Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) differs from primary TTS in terms of clinical characteristics, management, and prognosis. COPD exacerbation has been recognized as a physical trigger for TTS, but its prognostic implications for secondary TTS are poorly understood.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of COPD on in-hospital outcomes in TTS patients.

Introduction: Synovial sarcoma is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas in children. Guidelines regarding the adequate extent of resection margins and the role of re-resection are lacking. We sought to evaluate the adequate resection margin and the role of re-resection in predicting outcomes in children with synovial sarcomas.

Although the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is effective at preventing infection and certain types of cancer, uptake is suboptimal. HPV vaccine requirements for school entry are an underutilized strategy to increase HPV vaccine uptake among adolescents. The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that are predictive of parents' attitudes toward schools requiring the HPV vaccine for entry into middle school.

Background: Genicular radiofrequency neurotomy (GRFN) is an effective treatment for a subset of individuals with chronic knee pain. Previous studies demonstrate that Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries report worse outcomes following various interventional procedures compared with commercially insured patients.
Objective: Evaluate the association of payer type on GRFN treatment outcomes.

Mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome are unknown, although key small molecule metabolites may be involved. Bulk and spatial metabolomics identified adenine to be upregulated and specifically enriched in coronary blood vessels in hearts from patients with diabetes and left ventricular hypertrophy. Single nucleus gene expression studies revealed that endothelial methylthioadenosine phosphorylase (MTAP) was increased in human hearts with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Introduction: Disease and non-battle injury (DNBI) has historically been the leading casualty type among service members in warfare and a leading health problem confronting military personnel, resulting in significant loss of manpower. Studies show a significant increase in disease burden for DNBI when compared to combat-related injuries. Understanding the causes of and trends in DNBI may help guide efforts to develop preventive measures and help increase medical readiness and resiliency.

Dihydroartemisinic acid (DHAA), a sesquiterpenoid natural product from , converts to artemisinin, an anti-malarial natural product that contains an endoperoxide bridge. The endoperoxide moiety is responsible for the biological activity of artemisinin. Therefore, understanding the biosynthesis of this functional group could lead to the optimization of the process to produce this medicine.

Background: It is unclear how post-stroke cognitive trajectories differ by stroke type and ischemic stroke subtype. We studied associations between stroke types (ischemic, hemorrhagic), ischemic stroke subtypes (cardioembolic, large artery atherosclerotic, lacunar/small vessel, cryptogenic/other determined etiology), and post-stroke cognitive decline.
Methods: This pooled cohort analysis from four US cohort studies (1971-2019) identified 1,143 dementia-free individuals with acute stroke during follow-up: 1,061 (92.

This article explores the practice of immobilization during fluoroscopy procedures for infants, discussing its advantages and disadvantages. The authors examine contrasting policies and thoughts on immobilization across different medical institutions. While some advocate for its routine use to minimize patient motion, enhance imaging quality, and decrease radiation exposure, others question its necessity and raise concerns about patient consent and parental distress.

The brain is a complex dynamic system whose current state is inextricably coupled to awareness of past, current, and anticipated future threats and opportunities that continually affect awareness and behavioral goals and decisions. Brain activity is driven on multiple time scales by an ever-evolving flow of sensory, proprioceptive, and idiothetic experience. Neuroimaging experiments seek to isolate and focus on some aspect of these complex dynamics to better understand how human experience, cognition, behavior, and health are supported by brain activity.
