Objective: Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization and the Subdural Evacuation Port System (SEPS) are minimally invasive treatment paradigms for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). Although SEPS offers acute decompression of local mass effect from a cSDH, MMA embolization has been shown to reduce the rate of cSDH recurrence. In combination, these procedures present a potentially safer strategy to a challenging pathology.

Article Synopsis
  • Genome-wide association studies have found thousands of genetic variations affecting blood traits, but the impact of structural variants on these traits was previously unclear.
  • A study using whole genome sequencing from a diverse group of nearly 50,700 participants identified 21 significant structural variants linked to red and white blood cell traits, with most findings confirmed in other datasets.
  • Experimental evidence showed that a specific deletion linked to lower monocyte counts disrupts an enhancer for the S1PR3 gene, leading to reduced S1PR3 expression.

Article Synopsis
  • Tobacco and alcohol use contribute significantly to global mortality rates, with heritability playing a key role in these behaviors.
  • This study utilized genetic data from a diverse population of 3.4 million individuals, including 21% non-European ancestry, to identify genetic variants linked to tobacco and alcohol use.
  • Findings showed that while increased genetic diversity improved the identification of genomic loci, polygenic risk scores were less effective across different ancestries, underscoring the need for larger and more diverse genetic datasets for better predictive outcomes.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibits diverse symptomology and neuroimaging studies report widespread disruption of key brain areas. Numerous theories underpinning the network degeneration hypothesis (NDH) posit that neuropsychiatric diseases selectively target brain areas via meaningful network mechanisms rather than as indistinct disease effects. The present study tests the hypothesis that MDD is a network-based disorder, both structurally and functionally.

DeBakey Department of Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Tex; The Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Tex; Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, CHI St Luke's Health-Baylor St Luke's Medical Center, Houston, Tex; Cardiovascular Research Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Tex.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed how community socioeconomic factors (like poverty, income, and education) and gender impact health outcomes in patients who had surgery on the ascending aorta, root, and arch.
  • A total of 2,634 patients were evaluated, with findings showing that men generally lived in areas with better socioeconomic conditions than women, which correlated with better health outcomes for men after surgery.
  • The results indicated that female patients faced more adverse outcomes overall, and even after matching for socioeconomic factors, men showed significantly lower rates of complications and better survival rates compared to women.

Alterations of serine/threonine phosphorylation of the cardiac proteome are a hallmark of heart failure. However, the contribution of tyrosine phosphorylation (pTyr) to the pathogenesis of cardiac hypertrophy remains unclear. We use global mapping to discover and quantify site-specific pTyr in two cardiac hypertrophic mouse models, i.

Organising pneumonia (OP) is a form of interstitial pneumonia characterised by inflammation and scarring leading to obstruction within the small airways and alveoli. Practice guidelines recommend treatment of moderate to severe OP with glucocorticoids; however, there have been cases of steroid-resistant OP successfully treated with rituximab. We describe a case of a woman in her 20s with rheumatoid arthritis who presented with pleuritic chest pain, haemoptysis and dyspnoea on exertion and was diagnosed with OP after multiple radiographic images and biopsies.

Context: Some individuals present with forms of diabetes that are "atypical" (AD), which do not conform to typical features of either type 1 diabetes (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D). These forms of AD display a range of phenotypic characteristics that likely reflect different endotypes based on unique etiologies or pathogenic processes.

Objective: To develop an analytical approach to identify and cluster phenotypes of AD.

Marsupials have been a powerful comparative model to understand mammalian biology. However, because of the unique characteristics of their embryology, marsupial pluripotency architecture remains to be fully understood, and nobody has succeeded in developing embryonic stem cells (ESCs) from any marsupial species. We have developed an integration-free iPSC reprogramming method and established validated iPSCs from two inbred strains of a marsupial, The monoiPSCs showed a significant (6181 DE-genes) and highly uniform ( [95% CI] = 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Communicating in busy places, like at a party, can be hard because there are many sounds mixed together, and people have different abilities to focus on what they want to hear.
  • A study measured how well 425 people can understand speech in noisy environments and found that genes play a big role in this ability.
  • The results also showed that older age and money-related factors affect how well people can hear in noisy situations, pointing to a potential link to "hidden hearing loss."

Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease associated with eosinophilic infiltration, increased mucus production, airway hyperresponsiveness, and airway remodeling. Epidemiologic data reveal that the prevalence of allergic sensitization and associated diseases has increased in the twentieth century. This has been hypothesized to be partly due to reduced contact with microbial organisms (the hygiene hypothesis) in industrialized society.

As the competitiveness of matching to an otolaryngology residency continues to climb, students are encouraged to seek mentorship and research within their home institution. This notion, however, does not account for students without a home otolaryngology program or department. Here, we present a research model where medical students conduct clinical research and gain experience and mentorship within a local otolaryngology private practice.

Advances in genetics and developmental biology are revealing the relationship between genotype and dental phenotype (G:P), providing new approaches for how paleontologists assess dental variation in the fossil record. Our aim was to understand how the method of trait definition influences the ability to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history in the Cercopithecidae, the Linnaean Family of monkeys currently living in Africa and Asia. We compared the two-dimensional assessment of molar size (calculated as the mesiodistal length of the crown multiplied by the buccolingual breadth) to a trait that reflects developmental influences on molar development (the inhibitory cascade, IC) and two traits that reflect the genetic architecture of postcanine tooth size variation (defined through quantitative genetic analyses: MMC and PMM).

Background: The role of pulse pressure (PP) 'widening' at older and younger age as a cardiovascular risk factor is still controversial. Mean PP, as determined from repeated blood pressure (BP) readings, can be expressed as a sum of two components: 'elastic PP' (elPP) and 'stiffening PP' (stPP) associated, respectively, with stiffness at the diastole and its relative change during the systole. We investigated the association of 24-h ambulatory PP, elPP, and stPP ('PP variables') with mortality and composite cardiovascular events in different age classes.
