Objectives: To utilize the theory of planned behavior (TPB) in explaining the prediction of physical activity intention and determine if present activity behavior attenuates theory construct relationships in a sample of low-income Mexican women.
Methods: Data were gathered on 201 subjects through a self-report survey instrument and analyzed through structural equation modeling.
Results: Present activity behavior attenuated theory construct influence on intention, and perceived behavioral control was the strongest predictor of intent to engage in physical activity.

When attacked, many decapod crustaceans perform tailflips, which are triggered by a neural circuit that includes lateral giant interneurons, medial giant interneurons, and fast flexor motor giant neurons (MoGs). Slipper lobsters (Scyllaridae) lack these giant neurons, and it has been hypothesized that behavioral (e.g.

Self-care represents the bulk of all healthcare and is the first therapeutic mode employed by most people in the lay health arena regardless of cultural affiliation. The purpose of this article is to present a schema describing Mexican American (MA) women's pathways to health, including self-care, via the lay/popular, folk, and professional healthcare arenas. The schema is based on a naturalistic study of MA women in the Texas Rio Grande Valley using Kleinman's cultural model of healthcare systems.

We demonstrate, for what is believed to be the first time, the design of diamondlike photonic crystals made by holographic lithography based on five-beam interference. All five beams are launched from the same half-space, and the exposure can easily be realized by a single diffractive optical element. The photonic structure can be constructed through the translation of the interference pattern controlled by the phase shift of laser beams.

X-ray absorption fine structure is a powerful tool for probing the structures of metals in proteins in both crystalline and noncrystalline environments. Until recently, a fundamental problem in biological XAFS has been that ad hoc assumptions must be made concerning the vibrational properties of the amino acid residues that are coordinated to the metal to fit the data. Here, an automatic procedure for accurate structural determination of active sites of metalloproteins is presented.

Participants' expectancies and hypnotic performance throughout the course of a standardized, individually administered hypnotic protocol were analyzed with a structural equation model that integrated underlying ability, expectancy, and hypnotic response. The model examined expectancies and ability as simultaneous predictors of hypnotic responses as well as hypnotic responses as an influence on subsequent expectancies. Results of the proposed model, which fit very well, supported each of the 4 major hypothesized effects: Expectancies showed significant stability across the course of the hypnosis protocol; expectancies influenced subsequent hypnotic responses, controlling for latent ability; hypnotic responses, in turn, affected subsequent expectancies; and a latent trait underlay hypnotic responses, controlling for expectancies.

The authors studied sexual attitudes in 328 university students from 10 undergraduate classes at a Hispanic-serving university near the Texas-Mexico border. Men (n = 128) and women (n = 199) rated their level of agreement with 38 items on a revised sexuality questionnaire. There were 283 self-identified Hispanic students and 44 self-identified non-Hispanic students in the sample.

This paper describes the development of the fear survey for adults with mental retardation (FSAMR) and provides initial evidence of its psychometric properties. The FSAMR was designed to be sensitive to the assessment needs of individuals with mental retardation. The items were developed through open-ended interviews, a review of existing measures, expert input, and pilot testing.

Mexico is experiencing a demographic transition in which the percentage of the population older than 50 years of age is growing rapidly as a result of increases in life expectancy. This population has special needs that must be taken into account when formulating policy, especially in terms of access to health care services and social security. In this article we present a general description of the Mexican Health and Aging Survey (MHAS), a panel study that began in 2001 and that provides a unique opportunity to study complex demographic and economic issues through the exploration of personal characteristics, socioeconomic transfers and health indicators for a sample of 15 186 middle and older age adults.

I examined 2 different views on organization of linear order information in memory: the linear schema view and the hierarchical structure view. The linear schema view holds that there is a strong tendency in memory to organize an array of transitively related elements into a unidimensional order. The hierarchical structure view maintains that the transitively related elements are organized in memory in a hierarchy of items.

By the late 1930s, silicosis had become one of the most important occupational diseases in Chile. It was a medical and scientific problem, and a favorite topic in medical congresses; in Chile, a mining country, it also had serious political and economic implications. The recognition of silicosis did not happen in a vacuum, but was part of a national debate on the social role of the state and its responsibility toward working people's health and safety.

Opponents of euthanasia sometimes argue that it is incompatible with the purpose of medicine, since physicians have an unconditional duty never to intentionally cause death. But it is not clear how such a duty could ever actually be unconditional, if due consideration is given to the moral weight of countervailing duties equally fundamental to medicine. Whether physicians' moral duties are understood as correlative with patients' moral rights or construed noncorrelatively, a doctor's obligation to abstain from intentional killing cannot be more than a defeasible duty.
