Dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) is an acidic noncollagenous protein shown by gene ablations to be critical for the proper mineralization of bone and dentin. In the extracellular matrix of these tissues DMP1 is present as fragments representing the NH2-terminal (37 kDa) and COOH-terminal (57 kDa) portions of the cDNA-deduced amino acid sequence. During our separation of bone noncollagenous proteins, we observed a high molecular weight, DMP1-related component (designated DMP1-PG).

The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence and types of dental emergencies occurring in a university-based, pediatric dentistry postgraduate outpatient clinic. All patients presenting for emergency dental care during scheduled clinic hours over a three year were identified, and their charts were retrieved. Each record was reviewed for demographic information, chief complaint and clinical diagnosis.

There are several dental complications associated with cocaine abuse, including adverse reactions to dental anesthetics, post-operative bleeding, and cellulitis, which can lead to necrosis of orbital, nasal, and palatal bones. Following is a report of the initial treatment rendered to a patient who had destroyed most of her hard palate over a ten-year period of cocaine abuse. There are no classic socio-economic or educational profiles for abusers of cocaine.

The effects of a fluoride dentifrice (Colgate Total) and a calcium-phosphate containing fluoride dentifrice (Enamelon) on caries-like enamel lesion formation and progression were evaluated in vitro. One quarter from each tooth (n = 12) was assigned to one of the study groups: 1) control group [artificial saliva only]; 2) Colgate Total; and 3) Enamelon. The dentifrices were applied to the enamel windows (3 minutes, 3 time per day for 14 days).

This report describes the uncommon problem of a female patient diagnosed with an eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, who reported self-mutilating dental factitious behavior. The case presents a serious diagnostic and management problem. Notwithstanding the clinical appearance of the dentition, a thorough medical-dental history was essential for this uncommon diagnosis.

Tetrasodium and/or tetrapotassium pyrophosphate (Ppi) is the anticalculus component of most tartar control dentifrices on the market today. While pyrophosphates alone are not responsible for hypersensitivity reactions, several modifications which may lead to adverse oral manifestations may occur when pyrophosphates are added to a dentifrice. First, tetrasodium pyrophosphate in a dentifrice forms a slightly alkaline solution upon oral use which could irritate oral membranes.
