Background/objectives: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is rising, and Western diets high in red and processed meats may be contributing. It is important to identify dietary nutrients that increase CRC risk and perhaps interventions that may modulate such risk. The relationship between dietary choline intake and CRC is still unclear.

Interleukin-22, discovered in the year of 2000, is a pleiotropic Th17 cytokine from the IL-10 family of cytokines. IL-22 signals through the type 2 cytokine receptor complex IL-22R and predominantly activates STAT3. This pathway leads to the transcription of several different types of genes, giving IL-22 context-specific functions ranging from inducing antimicrobial peptide expression to target cell proliferation.

Merkel Cell Carcinoma is a rare and aggressive cutaneous carcinoma with a propensity for metastasis and death. Our study describes the prevalence, sociodemographics and inpatient mortality of Merkel Cell Carcinoma related hospitalizations in the United States from 2011 to 2020. We conducted an observational study using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database, which captures a 20% sample of all hospitalizations in the United States.

Red blood cells (RBCs) have been hypothesized to support hemostasis by facilitating platelet margination and releasing platelet-activating factors such as adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP). Significant knowledge gaps remain regarding how RBCs influence platelet function, especially in (patho)physiologically relevant hemodynamic conditions. Here, we present results showing how RBCs affect platelet function and hemostasis in conditions of anemia, thrombocytopenia, and pancytopenia and how the biochemical and biophysical properties of RBCs regulate platelet function at the blood and vessel wall interface and in the fluid phase under flow conditions.

Background And Objectives: This study presents results from a survey of physicians performing electrodiagnostic studies to assess average volume. We also assessed how different factors (trainees, technologists, age of the physician, and case complexity) affected volume. Productivity is an important factor for physicians across practice settings.

Background: Firearm-related injury represents a significant public health problem in the USA. Firearm purchasing has risen nationwide and there has been increased efforts to deploy injury prevention initiatives within gun establishments. However, firearm-related risks and harms that may occur inside these high-exposure settings are not well characterized.

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a subtype of stroke that predominantly impacts younger individuals. It is associated with high mortality rates and can cause long-term disabilities. This review examines the contribution of the initial blood load and the dynamics of clot clearance to the pathophysiology of SAH and the risk of adverse outcomes.

This systematic review aimed to investigate the prevalence of internalizing symptomatology among Multiracial adolescents in the United States and to report on the methods utilized to measure Multiracial race and internalizing symptoms. A comprehensive search was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, APA PsycInfo, and Web of Science Core Collection. The search was confined to peer-reviewed studies reporting the prevalence of any internalizing symptom among Multiracial adolescents between 10 and 24 years in the United States.

Background: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a major medical condition for travellers worldwide, particularly travellers to low- and middle-income countries. Norovirus (NoV) is the most common cause of viral AGE in older children and adults, but data on prevalence and impact amongst travellers is limited.
Methods: Prospective, multi-site, observational cohort study conducted 2015-2017, amongst adult international travellers from the US and Europe to areas of moderate to high risk of travel-acquired AGE.

Introduction: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a chronic disease of the upper respiratory tract caused by human papillomavirus types 6 and 11. The disease course is characteristically unpredictable, ranging from spontaneous remission to aggressive, recurrent disease. Thus, management is often challenging and requires unique approaches tailored to each individual patient.

Background: The Fellowship Council (FC) is a robust accreditation body with numerous fellowships; however, no specific criteria exist for hernia fellowships. This study analyzed the case log database to evaluate trends in fellowship exposure to hernia repairs.
Methods: FC hernia case log records (2007-2019) were coded as inguinal or ventral hernias and with or without mesh repair.

Objective: The aim of this study was to provide the evidence base to guide interconversion of the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) in neurological research.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of paired mRS and GOS recordings was conducted using datasets with the following selection criteria: (1) patients had haemorrhagic stroke, (2) simultaneous mRS and GOS measurements were available, and (3) data sharing was possible. The relationship between mRS and GOS was assessed using correlation analysis.

Candidate gene studies have identified genetic variants associated with clinical outcomes following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), but no genome-wide association studies have been performed to date. Here we report the results of the discovery phase of a two-stage genome-wide meta-analysis of outcome after aSAH. We identified 157 independent loci harbouring 756 genetic variants associated with outcome after aSAH (p < 1 × 10), which require validation.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) results in persistent clinical deficits which prevent survivors from returning to normal daily functioning. Only a small fraction of the variation in clinical outcome following aSAH is explained by known clinical, demographic and imaging variables; meaning additional unknown factors must play a key role in clinical outcome. There is a growing body of evidence that genetic variation is important in determining outcome following aSAH.

Purpose: This case report describes a unique case of a young patient with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a unilateral Coats-like response, and X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS).
Methods: A 9-year-old boy with a history of regressed ROP presented with a unilateral Coats-like response, subretinal exudation, and XLRS. Examination and imaging findings demonstrated a highly unique combination of bilateral retinoschisis and a dramatic unilateral Coats-like response with a large schisis cavity.

The November 2020 election of Joe Biden, coupled with the election of a Congress controlled by the Democratic Party, has the potential to dramatically alter the direction of health policy in the United States. Donald Trump failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) but he managed to whittle down aspects of coverage protection. Historically, the first 100 days of a presidency are a bellwether of accomplishments to come.

Objectives: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is used for treatment of acute neurologic conditions such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy relapse, and myasthenia gravis exacerbation. Precision dosing (adjusted or ideal body weight) is proposed to conserve IVIg. There have been no published studies comparing clinical outcomes in traditional dosing (actual body weight) with precision dosing.
