Carbon nanotubes, an emerging class of carbon nanomaterials, possess tremendous potential for application in biotechnology and biomedicine particularly in neurological disorders. Carbon nanotubes owing to their fascinating properties have the potential to revolutionize medicine and technology, particularly in the realm of drug delivery, biosensing, bioimaging, and as therapeutic agents to tackle complex neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In this review, a summary of the use of carbon nanotubes for neuropathological outcomes such as alleviating oxidative stress and amyloid formation, which are well-studied molecular outcomes associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who implement a CRE within an established iREC and to explore how this identity contributes to the success of these programs.

Introduction: There are studies with mixed conclusions about the role cholecystectomy plays as a risk factor for proximal colorectal cancer (CRC).
Methods: We performed a multicenter retrospective cohort study where the records of patients with CRC were reviewed. Data was collected regarding affected colon subsegment (cecum, ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid, or rectum, which were also combined into proximal or distal colon), history and time since cholecystectomy, histopathology reports (TNM classification and clinical stage), and KRAS, NRAS, and BRAF mutation analysis.

According to the World Health Organization, obesity is one of the most significant health issues currently because it increases risk for type 2 diabetes and cancer, heart disease, bone health, reproduction, and quality of living and it impacts approximately 500 million adults worldwide. This review analyzed the existing literature focusing on the effects of Metabolic and bariatric surgeries (MBS), including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy on changes in brain function and anatomy using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. A PubMed search using the key words bariatric surgery and MRI conducted in December 2023 resulted in 544 articles.

Introduction: Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) face heightened infection susceptibility, particularly severe risks from COVID-19. This study, the first systematic review in its domain, seeks to assess the impacts of COVID-19 on MM patients.
Method: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines and PROSPERO registration (ID: CRD42023407784), this study conducted an exhaustive literature search from January 1, 2020, to April 12, 2024, using specified search terms in major databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science).

The dissolution of mature fibrils and toxic amyloidogenic intermediates, including oligomers, continues to be the pinnacle in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Yet, methods to effectively and quantitatively report on the interconversion between amyloid monomers, oligomers and mature fibrils fall short.

Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing is a rapid prototyping technique and reproducible manufacturing platform, which makes it a useful tool to develop advanced microfluidic devices for bioanalytical applications. However, limited information exists regarding the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the photocured polymers printed with SLA. This study demonstrates the characterization of a commercially available SLA 3D printed polymer to evaluate the potential presence of any time-dependent changes in material properties that may affect its ability to produce functional, capillary-action microfluidic devices.

Vascular diseases are the underlying pathology in many life-threatening illnesses. Human cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in angiogenesis are complex and difficult to study in current 2D in vitro and in vivo animal models. Engineered 3D in vitro models that incorporate human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) derived endothelial cells (ECs) and supportive biomaterials within a dynamic microfluidic platform provide a less expensive, more controlled, and reproducible platform to better study angiogenic processes in response to external chemical or physical stimulus.

Environmental agents such as pesticides, weedicides and herbicides (collectively referred to as pesticides) are associated with the onset and pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's (PD) and Alzheimer's (AD) diseases. In this research, the consequence of using rubber tire aggregates (RTA) on the durability and mechanical characteristics of polypropylene fibers (PF) reinforced concrete is evaluated. Fifteen concrete mixtures were produced and tested in the laboratory. RTA was utilized instead of fine natural aggregates (FNA) to the concrete at concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by a volumetric fraction; also, the contents of PF in the concrete mixtures were 0%, 1%, and 2% by weight fraction.

The potent environmental herbicide and weedicide paraquat is linked to neuromotor defects and Parkinson's disease (PD). We have evaluated the neuroprotective role of citric acid-sourced carbon quantum dots (Cit-CQDs) on paraquat-insulted human neuroblastoma-derived SH-SY5Y cell lines and on a paraquat-exposed nematode (). Our data reveal that Cit-CQDs are able to scavenge free radicals in test tube assays and mitigate paraquat-elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in SH-SY5Y cells.

The herbicide and viologen, N, N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride (Paraquat) is known to be toxic to neuronal cells by a multifactorial process involving an elevation in the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the triggering of amyloid-protein aggregation and their accumulation, collectively leading to neuronal dyshomeostasis. We demonstrate that green-chemistry-synthesized sustainable gelatin-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs) mitigate paraquat-induced neurotoxic outcomes and resultant compromise in organismal mortality. Gelatin-derived CQDs were found to possess antioxidant properties and ameliorated ROS elevation in paraquat-insulted neuroblastoma-derived SHSY-5Y cells, protecting them from herbicide-induced cell death.
