This study was designed to determine whether end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) values obtained by noninvasive oral/nasal cannula circuit with side-stream capnometry correlate reliably with capillary PCO2 (CapCO2) in a pediatric population without cardiopulmonary problems. Some cells accumulate folate via a receptor-coupled process termed potocytosis. The folate receptor, a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol anchored M(r) 38,000-39,000 glycoprotein, is coded for by at least two genes (FR alpha and FR beta) at 11q13. We report a 4-year-old boy who developed tumor lysis syndrome complicated by severe hyperphosphatemia and acute renal failure, following chemotherapy for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Despite successful treatment of hyperphosphatemia with hemodialysis, there was an immediate rebound in the high serum phosphorus level. The patient underwent a second treatment with hemodialysis which was then followed by continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH).

Background And Methods: The management of episodes of severe pain in patients with sickle cell disease is a difficult clinical problem. We studied 36 children and adolescents with sickle cell disease who had 56 acute episodes of severe pain (44 in 27 patients with sickle cell anemia, 8 in 7 patients with sickle cell-hemoglobin C disease, and 4 in 2 patients with sickle cell-beta (+)-thalassemia). The patients were randomly assigned in double-blind fashion to receive an intravenous infusion of either saline placebo or high-dose methylprednisolone (15 mg per kilogram of body weight, to a maximum of 1000 mg) on their admission to the hospital and again 24 hours later.

Neonatal juxtamedullary proximal convoluted tubules (PCTs) transport bicarbonate at one-third the rate of adult rabbit PCTs. The lower rate of bicarbonate transport could be due to a greater permeability of the neonatal PCT to bicarbonate or to a lower rate of active bicarbonate transport. The role of cytokines in the regulation of articular inflammation and cartilage degradation was evaluated in the rabbit model of Haemophilus influenzae type b arthritis. At 6 and 12 h after intraarticular infection, treatment with IB4 monoclonal antibody to the CD18 leukocyte receptor alone or in combination with dexamethasone resulted in significant reduction of synovial fluid (SF) neutrophil concentration. Treatment with dexamethasone alone was associated with lower SF concentrations of interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and stromelysin than in other groups.
