There is little doubt that pyruvate contributes to the increased alanine flux in exercise, but the role of protein breakdown is less clear. To quantify the relative contributions of pyruvate and protein breakdown to the increase in alanine flux observed in exercise, we used a primed, constant infusion of 15N-alanine and 1-13C-lactate. The rate of appearance of alanine, the de novo synthesis of alanine, and rate of alanine release from protein breakdown were determined in five healthy subjects at rest and during exercise.

We investigated the presence of respiratory-modulated receptors in the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (ExtSLN) in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing dogs. Of 39 receptors recorded from the ExtSLN, the vast majority responded with a slowly adapting discharge to compression of the cricothyroid muscle, and only 1 responded to probing of the laryngeal mucosa. Ten receptors showed a respiratory modulation.

In 1985 there were 288 applicants for the ten postgraduate Year 1 orthopedic residency positions in Galveston and San Antonio, of which 119 (41%) applicants successfully obtained a residency position in one of 76 orthopedic programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Successful applicants were younger and had higher Medical College Admissions Test scores, National Board of Medical Examiners, Part I (NBME-I) scores, and medical school grade point averages than unsuccessful applicants. Variables that increased acceptance rates were medical student status, an NBME-I score above 500, class rank in the top 40%, and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.

Short axis magnetic resonance images of a left ventricular aneurysm were compared to similar views obtained by echocardiography and by thallium-201 single photon emission computed tomography. Images of the dyskinetic left ventricular apex and the contractile left ventricular base were analyzed and compared. Unlike the previously reported orthogonal plane magnetic resonance images, short axis imaging provided representative and quantitative information in views comparable to those obtained by standard noninvasive imaging techniques.
