Some of the prominent features of long-term memory formation include protein synthesis, gene expression, enhanced neurotransmitter release, increased excitability, and formation of new synapses. As these processes are critically dependent on mitochondrial function, we hypothesized that increased mitochondrial respiration and dynamics would play a prominent role in memory formation. To address this possibility, we measured mitochondrial oxygen consumption (OCR) in hippocampal tissue punches from trained and untrained animals.

Purpose: Weight loss surgery is an effective, long-term treatment for severe obesity but individual response to surgery varies widely. The purpose of this study was to test a comprehensive theoretical model of factors that may be correlated with the greatest surgical weight loss at 1-3 years following surgery. Such a model would help determine what predictive factors to measure when patients are preparing for surgery that may ensure the best weight outcomes.

Purpose: Treatment outcomes in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains dismal. On the basis of both extensive preclinical data and emerging clinical data, treatment with bromodomain and extra-terminal domain inhibitors (BETi) is a potential approach for patients with high-risk myeloid malignancies.
Patients And Methods: We conducted a phase I trial to study the safety and efficacy of PLX51107 (BETi) and azacitidine combination therapy in patients with R/R AML and high-risk (HR) MDS and studied mechanisms of resistance to the combination therapy.

Background And Objective: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is an anomaly of the cardiopulmonary system maturation process that results from both a global embryopathy and concomitant mechanical compression of the cardiopulmonary system from the abdominal contents during fetal maturation. This results in pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary hypoplasia, and cardiac dysfunction, requiring intense critical care management. The patients with highest risk CDH are the most challenging, resource-intensive, and bear most of the mortality.

Objective: Fetoscopic laser photocoagulation (FLP) is a well-established treatment for twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) between 16 and 26 weeks' gestation. High-quality evidence and guidelines regarding the optimal clinical management of very early (prior to 16 weeks), early (between 16 and 18 weeks) and late (after 26 weeks) TTTS are lacking. The aim of this study was to construct a structured expert-based clinical consensus for the management of early and late TTTS.

Background: Patients who are critically ill frequently accrue substantial nutrition deficits due to multiple episodes of prolonged fasting prior to procedures. Existing literature suggests that, for most patients receiving tube feeding, the aspiration risk is low. Yet, national and international guidelines do not address fasting times for tube feeding, promoting uncertainty regarding optimal preprocedural fasting practice.

The SENSCIS trial of nintedanib versus placebo is the largest trial conducted to date in patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD). This trial enrolled 576 patients with an extent of fibrotic ILD on high-resolution computed tomography of >10%. Median time since first non-Raynaud symptom was 3.

Grid cells play a principal role in enabling cognitive representations of ambient environments. The key property of these cells-the regular arrangement of their firing fields-is commonly viewed as a means for establishing spatial scales or encoding specific locations. However, using grid cells' spiking outputs for deducing geometric orderliness proves to be a strenuous task due to fairly irregular activation patterns triggered by the animal's sporadic visits to the grid fields.

Background: Few studies assessed the relationships between BMI and post varicocelectomy semen quality and fertility potential and they reported inconsistent findings.
Objective: To assess the association of BMI with semen parameters and reproductive hormones before and after microsurgical varicocelectomy.

Introduction: Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is a frequent urological diagnosis that affects men's quality of life. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a recent treatment option for patients with CPPS. We evaluated ESWT's short and long - term efficacy in managing CPPS.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex health problem in military veterans and service members (V/SM) that often involves comorbid vestibular impairment. Sleep apnea is another comorbidity that may exacerbate, and/or be exacerbated by, vestibular dysfunction.
Objective: To examine the relationship between sleep apnea and vestibular symptoms in V/SM diagnosed with TBI of any severity.

Cell-free circulating DNA is an evolving technology with important clinical applications in both obstetric care and oncology. In the challenging patient with pregnancy and co-existing malignancy, the utility of cell-free DNA both for aneuploidy screening and cancer identification is an area of active research. Understanding the physiology associated with circulating cell-free DNA and subsequent laboratory evaluation is critical for clinicians caring for the obstetric patient with cell-free fetal DNA screening results suggestive of malignancy.

Background: Inflammation is a fundamental biological response to injury and infection, which if unregulated can contribute to the pathophysiology of many diseases. The vagus nerve, which primarily originates from the dorsal motor nucleus (DMN), plays an important role in rapidly dampening inflammation by regulating splenic function. However, direct vagal innervation of the spleen, which houses the majority of immune and inflammatory cells, has not been established.

Background: TERT gene amplification (TGA) is a mechanism of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) upregulation frequently utilized by acral melanomas (AMs). Currently, the utility of TERT immunohistochemistry (IHC) to predict TGA status in AMs is poorly documented.
Methods: AMs (26 primary and 3 metastatic) and non-acral cutaneous melanomas (6 primary) were subjected to immunohistochemical analysis using anti-TERT antibody to demonstrate protein expression and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to assess genomic copy number alteration.

The hippocampus plays a prominent role in learning and memory formation. The functional integrity of this structure is often compromised after traumatic brain injury (TBI), resulting in lasting cognitive dysfunction. The activity of hippocampal neurons, particularly place cells, is coordinated by local theta oscillations.
