Importance: Pregnancy induces unique physiologic changes to the immune response and hormonal changes leading to plausible differences in the risk of developing post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), or Long COVID. Exposure to SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy may also have long-term ramifications for exposed offspring, and it is critical to evaluate the health outcomes of exposed children. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Multi-site Observational Study of PASC aims to evaluate the long-term sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection in various populations.

Recent insights into the pathogenesis and therapeutic targets of chronic liver diseases.

eGastroenterology

October 2023

Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, University of Texas McGovern Medical School, Houston, Texas, USA.

Viral hepatitis, alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are the three major causes of chronic liver diseases, which account for approximately 2 million deaths per year worldwide. The current direct-acting antiviral drugs and vaccinations have effectively reduced and ameliorated viral hepatitis infection, but there are still no effective drug treatments for ALD, NAFLD and liver cancer due to the poor understanding of their pathogenesis. To better understand the pathogenesis, the fifth Chinese American Liver Society/Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America Hepatology Division Annual Symposium, which was held virtually on 21-22 October 2022, focused on the topics related to ALD, NAFLD and liver cancer.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is the historic term used for decades for the HLA-B27-associated inflammatory disease affecting mainly the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) and spine. Classification criteria for AS have radiographic sacroiliitis as a dominant characteristic. However, with the availability of MRI of SIJ, it could be demonstrated that the disease starts long before definite SIJ changes become visible on radiographs.

This paper illuminates the significant question of how the oral commensal adapts to the metabolically changing environments of several extra-oral sites such as placenta and colon to promote various diseases as an opportunistic pathogen. We demonstrate here that the highly conserved itrogen-ixation complex, commonly known as Rnf complex, is key to fusobacterial metabolic adaptation and virulence. Genetic disruption of this Rnf complex causes global defects in polymicrobial interaction, biofilm formation, cell growth and morphology, hydrogen sulfide production, and ATP synthesis.

Ready access to the internet and online sources of information about child health and disease has allowed people more 'distant' from a child, family and paediatric clinician to inform and influence clinical decisions. It has also allowed parents to share aspects of their child's health and illness to garner support or funding for treatment. As a consequence, paediatric clinicians must consider and incorporate the crowd of opinions and voices into their clinical and ethical reasoning.

Six transmembrane epithelial antigen of the prostate (STEAP) 1-4 are membrane-embedded hemoproteins that chelate a heme prosthetic group in a transmembrane domain (TMD). STEAP2-4, but not STEAP1, have an intracellular oxidoreductase domain (OxRD) and can mediate cross-membrane electron transfer from NADPH via FAD and heme. However, it is unknown whether STEAP1 can establish a physiologically relevant electron transfer chain.
