Prions are infectious proteins causing fatal, transmissible neurodegenerative diseases of animals and humans. Replication involves template-directed refolding of host encoded prion protein, PrPC, by its infectious conformation, PrPSc. Following its discovery in captive Colorado deer in 1967, uncontrollable contagious transmission of chronic wasting disease (CWD) led to an expanded geographic range in increasing numbers of free-ranging and captive North American (NA) cervids.

Implications of Frailty in COVID-19.

Cardiol Rev

October 2021

Departments of Medicine and Cardiology, New York Medical College/Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY.

As the global coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 continues to cause higher mortality and hospitalization rates among older adults, strategies such as frailty screening have been suggested for resource allocation and clinical management. Frailty is a physiologic condition characterized by a decreased reserve to stressors and is associated with disability, hospitalization, and death. Measuring frailty can be a useful tool to determine the risk and prognosis of COVID-19 patients in the acute setting, and to provide higher quality of care for vulnerable individuals in the outpatient setting.

Racial/ethnic differences in health-related quality of life among female breast cancer survivors: cross-sectional findings from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey.

Public Health

July 2021

University of Texas School of Public Health, Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research, Division of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Houston, TX, USA.

Objectives: Breast cancer survivors have reported worse health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes on some subscales when compared with members of the general population. However, the increased attention to breast cancer survivorship should have improved the HRQoL of these survivors. Our aim was to examine whether physical and mental component scores (PCS-12 and MCS-12) using the Short Form (SF-12) questionnaire were different for racial/ethnic minorities, specifically for Black and Hispanic women relative to White women.

Background And Purpose: Stroke induces the expression of several long noncoding RNAs in the brain. However, their functional significance in poststroke outcome is poorly understood. We recently observed that a brain-specific long noncoding RNA called Fos downstream transcript (FosDT) is induced rapidly in the rodent brain following focal ischemia.

Inhibitory leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptors (LILRBs 1-5) transduce signals via intracellular immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs that recruit phosphatases to negatively regulate immune activation. The activation of LILRB signaling in immune cells may contribute to immune evasion. In addition, the expression and signaling of LILRBs in cancer cells especially in certain hematologic malignant cells directly support cancer development.

Injury Severity, Arrival Physiology, Coagulopathy, and Outcomes Among the Youngest Trauma Patients.

J Surg Res

August 2021

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Houston, Texas; Center for Surgical Trials and Evidence-based Practice, the McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas-Houston, Houston, Texas. Electronic address:

Background: Although physiologic differences exist between younger and older children, pediatric trauma analyses are weighted toward older patients. Trauma-induced coagulopathy, determined by rapid thrombelastography (rTEG), is a predictor of outcome in trauma patients, but the significance of rTEG values among very young trauma patients remains unknown. Our objective was to identify the prehospital or physiologic factors, including rTEG values, that were associated with mortality in trauma patients younger than 5 y old.

Background: Elucidating the molecular pathogenesis underlying East Texas bleeding disorder (ET) led to the discovery of alternatively spliced F5 transcripts harboring large deletions within exon 13. These alternatively spliced transcripts produce a shortened form of coagulation factor V (FV) in which a large portion of its B-domain is deleted. These FV isoforms bind tissue factor pathway inhibitor alpha (TFPIα) with high affinity, prolonging its circulatory half-life and enhancing its anticoagulant effects.

Gene-based analysis of bi-variate survival traits via functional regressions with applications to eye diseases.

Genet Epidemiol

July 2021

Department of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Biomathematics, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, District of Columbia, USA.

Genetic studies of two related survival outcomes of a pleiotropic gene are commonly encountered but statistical models to analyze them are rarely developed. To analyze sequencing data, we propose mixed effect Cox proportional hazard models by functional regressions to perform gene-based joint association analysis of two survival traits motivated by our ongoing real studies. These models extend fixed effect Cox models of univariate survival traits by incorporating variations and correlation of multivariate survival traits into the models.
