Introduction: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a chronic disease of the upper respiratory tract caused by human papillomavirus types 6 and 11. The disease course is characteristically unpredictable, ranging from spontaneous remission to aggressive, recurrent disease. Thus, management is often challenging and requires unique approaches tailored to each individual patient.

Article Synopsis
  • Metaphyseal dysplasia is a group of skeletal disorders that mainly affect the growth regions of long bones, leading to issues like shorter stature and knee pain, with a specific rare type known as Spahr type (MDST) linked to genetic mutations identified in 2014.
  • A case study involving three Filipino siblings with MDST revealed varied clinical presentations, from significant bowing and pain in one sibling to milder symptoms in another, indicating a spectrum of severity within the condition.
  • The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing MDST in patients exhibiting short stature and specific bone irregularities, though there is currently no standardized treatment approach for managing the condition.

Microglia are key mediators of inflammatory responses within the brain, as they regulate pro-inflammatory responses while also limiting neuroinflammation via reparative phagocytosis. Thus, identifying genes that modulate microglial function may reveal novel therapeutic interventions for promoting better outcomes in diseases featuring extensive inflammation, such as stroke. To facilitate identification of potential mediators of inflammation, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing of aged mouse brains following stroke and found that was significantly up-regulated, particularly in microglia.

Purpose: Whether evaluating patients clinically, documenting care in the electronic health record, performing research, or communicating with administrative agencies, the use of a common set of terms and definitions is vital to ensure appropriate use of language. At a 2017 meeting of the Pediatric Section of the American Autonomic Society, it was determined that an autonomic data dictionary comprising aspects of evaluation and management of pediatric patients with autonomic disorders would be an important resource for multiple stakeholders.

Methods: Our group created the list of terms for the dictionary.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether being small for gestational age (SGA) or large for gestational age (LGA) or having a small or large head circumference (HC) at birth is associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Study Design: This is a secondary analysis of a multicenter negative randomized trial of thyroxine therapy for subclinical hypothyroid disorders in pregnancy. The primary outcome was child intelligence quotient (IQ) at 5 years of age.

Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Complex portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a challenge in liver transplantation (LT). Extra-anatomical approaches to portal revascularization, including renoportal (RPA), left gastric vein (LGA), pericholedochal vein (PCA), and cavoportal (CPA) anastomoses, have been described in case reports and series. The RP4LT Collaborative was created to record cases of alternative portal revascularization performed for complex PVT.

Palliative care teams are often consulted to assist in treating persistent dementia-related behavioral issues. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) offers an alternative to traditional antipsychotic drugs in the long-term management of dementia with behavioral change. We present the case of an 85-year-old man with dementia with Lewy bodies with worsening aggression refractory to antipsychotic management.

Background Peripheral artery disease is endemic in our globally aging population, with >200 million affected worldwide. Graft/stent thrombosis after revascularization is common and frequently results in amputation, major adverse cardiovascular events, and cardiovascular mortality. Optimizing medications to decrease thrombosis is of paramount importance; however, limited guidance exists on how to use and monitor antithrombotic therapy in this heterogeneous population.

A significant number of patients with dextrocardia and other cardiac malpositions have other congenital heart defects (CHDs). The incidence of CHDs in subjects with cardiac malpositions is significantly greater than that in normal children, and the prevalence varies with the associated visceroatrial situs. The most useful approach to diagnosis is segmental analysis.

Clinical Neurosciences, Clinical and Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, Southampton SO17 6YD, UK. Electronic address:

Objective: The aim of this study was to provide the evidence base to guide interconversion of the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) in neurological research.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of paired mRS and GOS recordings was conducted using datasets with the following selection criteria: (1) patients had haemorrhagic stroke, (2) simultaneous mRS and GOS measurements were available, and (3) data sharing was possible. The relationship between mRS and GOS was assessed using correlation analysis.

Background: Invasive fungal disease (IFD) is a major source of morbidity and mortality for hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients. Non-invasive biomarkers, such as the beta-D-glucan assay, may improve the diagnosis of IFD. The objective was to define the utility of surveillance testing using Fungitell® beta-D-glucan (BDG) assay in children receiving antifungal prophylaxis in the immediate post-HCT period.

Candidate gene studies have identified genetic variants associated with clinical outcomes following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), but no genome-wide association studies have been performed to date. Here we report the results of the discovery phase of a two-stage genome-wide meta-analysis of outcome after aSAH. We identified 157 independent loci harbouring 756 genetic variants associated with outcome after aSAH (p < 1 × 10), which require validation.

Objective: To characterize the frequency, causes, and predictors of readmissions of COVID-19 patients after discharge from heath facilities or emergency departments, interventions used to reduce readmissions, and outcomes of COVID-19 patients discharged from such settings.

Methods: We performed a systematic review for case series and observational studies published between January 2020 and April 2021 in PubMed, Embase, LILACS, and MedRxiv, reporting the frequency, causes, or risk factors for readmission of COVID-19 survivors/patients. We conducted a narrative synthesis and assessed the methodological quality using the JBI critical appraisal checklist.
