Merkel Cell Carcinoma is a rare and aggressive cutaneous carcinoma with a propensity for metastasis and death. Our study describes the prevalence, sociodemographics and inpatient mortality of Merkel Cell Carcinoma related hospitalizations in the United States from 2011 to 2020. We conducted an observational study using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database, which captures a 20% sample of all hospitalizations in the United States.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to compare the safety and effectiveness of endovascular treatment (EVT) versus best medical management (BMM) for patients with acute ischaemic stroke caused by distal medium vessel occlusion (DMVO).
  • The analysis involved 2,125 patients, showing no significant difference in achieving functional independence at 90 days between EVT and BMM, despite EVT being associated with higher rates of hemorrhagic complications.
  • The results suggest that EVT does not provide better functional outcomes than BMM in DMVO cases while increasing the risk of bleeding, indicating the need for cautious use of EVT and further research to improve treatment approaches.

Red blood cells (RBCs) have been hypothesized to support hemostasis by facilitating platelet margination and releasing platelet-activating factors such as adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP). Significant knowledge gaps remain regarding how RBCs influence platelet function, especially in (patho)physiologically relevant hemodynamic conditions. Here, we present results showing how RBCs affect platelet function and hemostasis in conditions of anemia, thrombocytopenia, and pancytopenia and how the biochemical and biophysical properties of RBCs regulate platelet function at the blood and vessel wall interface and in the fluid phase under flow conditions.

Background And Objectives: This study presents results from a survey of physicians performing electrodiagnostic studies to assess average volume. We also assessed how different factors (trainees, technologists, age of the physician, and case complexity) affected volume. Productivity is an important factor for physicians across practice settings.

Reduced hepatic AdipoR2 by increased glucocorticoid mediates effect of psychosocial stress to elevate serum cholesterol.

Mol Cell Endocrinol

October 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, West China School of Basic Medical Sciences & Forensic Medicine, Sichuan University Chengdu, 610041, PR China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how psychosocial stress impacts serum cholesterol levels and its connection to psychological and endocrine disorders, highlighting that this relationship has not been fully explored yet.
  • Findings indicate that stress leads to increased serum corticosterone, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in a mouse model, suggesting physiological changes triggered by stress.
  • The research reveals that elevated glucocorticoids from stress inhibit specific signaling pathways in the liver, resulting in reduced LDL-C clearance and increased cholesterol production.

Objective: Antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapy are commonly prescribed after fenestrated/branched endovascular aortic repair (F/BEVAR). However, the optimal regimen remains unknown. We sought to characterize practice patterns and outcomes of antiplatelet and anticoagulant use in patients who underwent F/BEVAR.

Background And Objective: Prior studies reveal that invited speaker panels, editorial boards, authors of practice guidelines, and senior authors of published articles are disproportionately male in the neurology field. We aimed to analyze a gender gap in authorship of accepted abstracts to the American Academy of Neurology annual meetings in 2020 and 2021.

Design/methods: This is a cross-sectional study evaluating the proportions of female first and senior abstract authors in 2020 and 2021.

Introduction: We conducted the first comprehensive evaluation of the therapeutic value and safety profile of transcatheter mitral edge-to-edge repair (TEER) and transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) in individuals concurrently afflicted with cancer.

Methods: Utilizing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) dataset, we analyzed all adult hospitalizations between 2016 and 2020 (n = 148,755,036). The inclusion criteria for this retrospectively analyzed prospective cohort study were all adult hospitalizations (age 18 years and older).

Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) may be administered to stroke patients requiring immediate treatment more quickly than emergency medical services if certain conditions are met. These conditions include the presence of mobile stroke units (MSUs) with on-site treatment teams and a computed tomography scanner. We compared clinical outcomes of MSU conventional therapy by emergency medical services through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) are increasing, challenging surgeons to adjust post-operative pain management guidelines. A literature review identified limited information on how to best care for these patients. The purpose of this study was to determine surgical perioperative management of OUD, challenges, and support needed for optimal care.

Objective: Borden-Shucart type I dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) lack cortical venous drainage and occasionally necessitate intervention depending on patient symptoms. Conversion is the rare transformation of a low-grade dAVF to a higher grade. Factors associated with increased risk of dAVF conversion to a higher grade are poorly understood.

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a subtype of stroke that predominantly impacts younger individuals. It is associated with high mortality rates and can cause long-term disabilities. This review examines the contribution of the initial blood load and the dynamics of clot clearance to the pathophysiology of SAH and the risk of adverse outcomes.

Objective: Our objective was to evaluate whether iodine status in pregnant patients with either subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroxinemia in the first half of pregnancy is associated with measures of behavior and neurodevelopment in children through the age of 5 years.

Study Design: This is a secondary analysis of a multicenter study consisting of two randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled treatment trials conducted in parallel. Patients with a singleton gestation before 20 weeks' gestation underwent thyroid screening using serum thyrotropin and free thyroxine.

Balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty: A systematic review.

Indian Heart J

May 2024

Children's Heart Institute, University of Texas-Houston McGovern Medical School, Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, Houston, TX, USA. Electronic address:

There is conclusive evidence for relief of pulmonary valve obstruction immediately after balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty (BPV) and at follow-up. Development of infundibular obstruction is seen in more severe PS cases and in older subjects. Reappearance of PS was observed in approximately 10 % of patients following BPV.

  • Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (neoCTX) is shown to be the best treatment for surgically resectable neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary tract (NEC-URO), improving outcomes compared to immediate surgery.
  • A study involving 203 patients revealed that neoCTX significantly increased the downstaging rate of tumors, particularly with the combination of ifosfamide and etoposide (IA/EP).
  • Overall survival rates after five years were much higher for patients receiving neoCTX (57%) compared to those undergoing surgery alone (22%) or surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy (30%).

Background: Stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and its incidence increases with age. While acute therapies for stroke are currently limited to intravenous thrombolytics and endovascular thrombectomy, recent studies have implicated an important role for the gut microbiome in post-stroke neuroinflammation. After stroke, several immuno-regulatory pathways, including the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) pathway, become activated.
