Article Synopsis
  • The manuscript outlines a mixed-methods case study examining data processes and challenges at trauma centers in rural Arkansas, focusing on how these issues impact registry data collection.
  • Data collection involves interviews and observations of trauma registry staff, utilizing a think-aloud protocol for in-depth analysis of workflows and barriers related to data submission.
  • The study aims to provide a baseline understanding of data collection practices and identify strengths, limitations, and interoperability barriers at different trauma centers across the state.

Background: Nearly two-thirds of family caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias (AD/ADRD) provide complex care, including medical care. Family caregivers typically receive little to no training on how to provide this care. Furthermore, family caregivers simultaneously grapple with the presence of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), diminished communication abilities, and comorbidities such as diabetes.

Family caregivers provide the majority of care for older and disabled family members living with an illness or disability. Although most caregivers want to provide high-quality care, many report providing care that is potentially harmful. We apply the Stress Process Model to review the preponderance of literature implicating quality of the relationship between caregivers and care recipients as a factor contributing to quality of family caregiving.

March 2022

Laboratory Oral Histopathology, Health Sciences Faculty and Oral Care Center for Inherited Diseases, University of Brasilia, Brasilia, Brazil.

Objectives: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a hereditable disorder characterized by early and unremitting development of intestinal polyps and extraintestinal manifestations requiring multidisciplinary surveillance. Herein we describe a multicenter cross-sectional analysis of the dento-osseous radiographic findings of patients with FAP from North and South America.

Study Design: Groups I and II included individuals with FAP diagnosed by standard clinical criteria.

Background: The relationship between early oseltamivir treatment (within 48 h of symptom onset) and mortality in patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) with severe influenza is disputed. This study aimed to investigate the association between early oseltamivir treatment and ICU mortality in critically ill patients with influenza pneumonia.

Methods: This was an observational study of patients with influenza pneumonia admitted to 184 ICUs in Spain during 2009-2018.

Corticosteroid treatment in critically ill patients with severe influenza pneumonia: a propensity score matching study.

Intensive Care Med

September 2018

Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care, St James ́s University Hospital, Trinity Centre for Health Sciences, Multidisciplinary Intensive Care Research Organization (MICRO), Dublin, Ireland.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify clinical factors linked to the use of corticosteroids and their effect on ICU mortality in critically ill patients with severe influenza pneumonia.
  • A total of 1,846 patients were analyzed, with 604 receiving corticosteroids; higher crude ICU mortality was observed in corticosteroid users compared to non-users.
  • After adjusting for confounding factors, findings indicated that corticosteroid administration significantly increased ICU mortality risk, suggesting these treatments should be avoided in such patients.

Histidyl-tRNA synthetase (HARS) ligates histidine to cognate tRNA molecules, which is required for protein translation. Mutations in HARS cause the dominant axonal peripheral neuropathy Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2W (CMT2W); however, the precise molecular mechanism remains undefined. Here, we investigated three HARS missense mutations associated with CMT2W (p.

Objectives: Previously we demonstrated the benefit of isavuconazole in treating murine mucormycosis due to Rhizopus. We wanted to determine the efficacy of isavuconazole in treating murine mucormycosis caused by Mucor, the second most common cause of the disease. Furthermore, because we previously determined that Rhizopus possesses the target enzyme for echinocandins and micafungin has activity against murine mucormycosis, we compared the activity of combination therapy (isavuconazole + micafungin) with placebo, either drug alone or standard therapy of liposomal amphotericin B (LAmB) in treating pulmonary murine mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus delemar.

Background: Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTI) represent a rare but devastating disease for which the systemic manifestations have been poorly characterized. In an effort to define an optimal endpoint for clinical trials in this condition, the objective of this study was to establish the pattern of organ dysfunction over time and determine the correlation between organ dysfunction and clinical outcome in patients with NSTI.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective clinical study of patients with NSTI presenting to 12 academic medical centers in the U.

Purpose: To describe the experience and results from the roll-in phase of the Cardiovascular Outcomes with Renal Atherosclerotic Lesions (CORAL) study.

Materials And Methods: The CORAL roll-in database was used to describe the baseline characteristics of the patients in the roll-in cohort, all of whom underwent renal artery stent placement; to evaluate CORAL site performance; to compare estimates of lesion (stenosis) severity made by site interventionalists with the central CORAL angiographic core laboratory readings; and to report outcomes after renal artery stent placement. During the roll-in phase, 239 patients (mean age, 70.

Background: The lack of prognostic factors in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) that reliably identifies biologically aggressive tumors adversely affects optimal management. The urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) system, comprised of its receptor, uPAR, and its inhibitor (PAI-1), are critical elements for tumor invasion and their expression in invasive breast cancer can predict clinical outcome. Expression of the uPA system in DCIS may be relevant in defining histological subsets of DCIS with invasive potential.
