The 12-item short form of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ-SF) was originally developed by Bryant and Smith (2001) and modified and confirmed using confirmatory factor analysis with mentally ill offenders by Diamond, Wang, and Buffington-Vollum (2005). In the current study, construct validity of the BPAQ-SF was assessed with a sample of 1,181 male and 435 female general population federal offenders. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor structure.

When evaluating an intramuscular soft tissue mass, a large differential diagnosis including both benign and malignant lesions must be considered. Because the treatment of these masses can range from simple observation to radical surgical excision, a minimally invasive but accurate method of diagnosis is desired. The workup should include radiographic imaging.

The medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) contains components of a neural network that functions as an interaural level difference (ILD) detector. In the cat, lateral superior olivary (LSO) neurons compare the contralateral inhibitory input from the MNTB with an excitatory input form the ipsilateral anteroventral cochlear nucleus to extract information about binaural stimuli. To better specify the inhibitory inputs to the LSO and gain a better understanding of the inhibitory component of the LSO network, the response characteristics of MNTB neurons were examined in cats under stimulus conditions similar to those used to study LSO inhibitory responses.

We examined the effect of cationic lipid-mediated gene transfection of nerve growth factor (NGF) in primary septo-hippocampal cell cultures. Rat NGF cDNA was subcloned into a pUC19-based plasmid containing a CMV promoter. Two days after NGF gene transfection in primary cell cultures, ELISA confirmed increases in NGF protein secretion from transfected cells.

Levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-3 (NT3) mRNA expression were measured in a rodent model of traumatic brain injury (TBI) following unilateral injury to the cerebral cortex. To obtain reliable data on the co-expression of neurotrophin genes, adjacent coronal sections from the same rat brains were hybridized in situ with BDNF and NT3 cRNA probes. BDNF mRNA increased at 1,3, and 5 hr after unilateral cortical injury in the cortex ipsilateral to the injury site and bilaterally in the dorsal hippocampus.

Lesion-induced increases in NGF mRNA are thought to be mediated by c-fos gene expression. Conversely, NGF induction of c-fos expression has been reported following administration of exogenous NGF. However, the relationship between c-fos and NGF gene expression after traumatic injury to the intact brain is not known.

Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) DNA binding factor is an inducible transcription factor that responds to various cellular signals. Levels of cortical NF-kappa B DNA binding activity were measured in a controlled lateral cortical impact model of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats. Using electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSAs), we found that NF-kappa B DNA binding activity in cerebral cortex ipsilateral to the injury site increased at 1, 3, 5 and 7 days after injury.

The myotonic dystrophy (DM) mutation has been identified as an unstable, expanded (CTG)n repeat in the 3' untranslated region of a gene designated DM protein kinase (DMPK). Both decreased and increased levels of mutant DMPK mRNA as well as decreased levels of protein have been variously reported and invoked to explain disparate molecular bases of this dominantly inherited disease. Most recently, increased nucleosome binding to such expanded repeats has been interpreted as support for transcriptional repression.

We examined liposome-mediated gene transfection of nerve growth factor (NGF) in primary central nervous system cultures. RT-PCR analyses detected increased expression of NGF mRNA one day after liposome-mediated NGF gene transfection. ELISA studies detected large increases in NGF protein in cells and in culture medium after NGF gene transfection.

Although liposomes have been widely employed to transfect DNA into a variety of cell types, no previous studies have systematically examined conditions producing optimal liposomal-mediated transfection of DNA into central nervous system (CNS) cells. Thus, we used the beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) reporter gene to examine factors influencing the efficiency of liposome-mediated gene transfection in CNS cell cultures. Our results indicate that without increasing the amounts of DNA, increased liposome concentrations within certain limits enhanced transfection efficiency.

Levels of c-fos mRNA and AP-1 transcription factors co-expression were measured in a controlled lateral cortical impact model of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats. Ipsilateral cerebral cortex and bilateral hippocampal c-fos mRNA increases were revealed by in situ hybridization after lateral cortical impact injury. Based on regional in situ hybridization data, we employed semi-quantitative RT-PCR methods to study the temporal profile of changes in the ipsilateral cortex at the site of injury.

Single-unit responses of cat superior olivary complex neurons to acoustic stimuli were examined to determine whether the units' action potentials were sufficiently synchronized to contribute to the brain stem evoked response. The medial nucleus of the trapezoid body and lateral superior olive are two major nuclei within the cat superior olivary complex. The first-spike discharge latencies of medial nucleus of the trapezoid body and lateral superior olivary neurons to monaural presentations of tone burst stimuli were measured as a function of stimulus level.
