Effective graphical displays of lipid panel tests and other cardiac risk factors are crucial for quick and accurate data interpretation, enabling early intervention for individuals with hyperlipidemia. Applying design theories such as Gestalt and distributed cognitive theories is essential for creating user-centered graphical data displays in the context of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors.

Intuitive Data Visualization for Enhanced Patient Comprehension.

The pilot study explores how data visualization influences patient comprehension and engagement in understanding hyperlipidemia test results across diverse patient groups. Employing Gestalt theory and the Relational Information Display (RID) framework, intuitive visual tools were developed using Google Sheets, QlikView®, and Microsoft® Excel®. The survey conducted with patients used a Likert scale to evaluate six different line and bar graphs, each presenting the same LDL cholesterol data.

People who report childhood trauma are more likely to have exaggerated stress responses that may also contribute to depressive symptoms in adulthood.

Compared with males, females are twice as likely to develop PTSD after trauma exposure, and cardiovascular reactivity to stress is a known risk factor for CVD. We aimed to examine hemodynamic responses to acute mental stress in trauma-exposed females with and without a clinical diagnosis of PTSD.

Background: Female infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) face significantly higher postoperative mortality rates after adjusting for cardiac complexity. Sex differences in metabolic adaptation to cardiac stressors may be an early contributor to cardiac dysfunction. In adult diseases, hypoxic/ischemic cardiomyocytes undergo a cardioprotective metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis which appears to be regulated in a sexually dimorphic manner.

Multiethnic growth standards for fetal body composition and organ volumes derived from 3D ultrasonography.

Background: A major goal of contemporary obstetrical practice is to optimize fetal growth and development throughout pregnancy. To date, fetal growth during prenatal care is assessed by performing ultrasonographic measurement of 2-dimensional fetal biometry to calculate an estimated fetal weight. Our group previously established 2-dimensional fetal growth standards using sonographic data from a large cohort with multiple sonograms.

Examining associations between physical activity context and children meeting daily physical activity guidelines: the role of outdoor play, sports, and other organized activities.

Background: Less than one-quarter of US children meet physical activity (PA) guidelines. Understanding the context in which PA occurs and how these contexts may play a role in meeting PA guidelines is an essential step toward developing effective behavioral interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between PA context (sports participation, participation in other organized physical activities, active travel to school, and outdoor play) and the number of days children met PA guidelines in a representative sample of children living in Texas.

Outcomes of concomitant antiobesity medication use with endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty in clinical US settings.

Background: To evaluate the weight loss outcomes of the large US cohort of patients undergoing endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) with or without concomitant anti-obesity (AOM) use.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of adult patients who underwent ESG from seven different sites, from January 1, 2020 to November 30, 2022. Percent total body weight loss (%TBWL) and %excess weight loss (%EWL) were calculated based on baseline weight at the procedure.

Objective: The objective of this paper is to document the feasibility of image acquisition, image optimization, and sonographic appearance of the exposed anatomic windows of cadaveric inner ear dissection for purposes of potential future clinical evaluation as part of the developing area of physical and rehabilitation space medicine.

Methods: Cadaveric dissection of the inner ear was conducted with the goal of exposing areas relevant to vestibular balance. Middle and inner ear structures of 3 human cadavers were imaged with multiple broadband transducers, including emphasis with higher frequency transducers.

Health disparities cause significant strain on the wellbeing of individuals and society. In this study, we focus on the health disparities present in the condition of Peripartum Depression (PPD), a significant public health issue. While PPD can be managed through therapy and medication, many women do not receive adequate PPD treatment due to issues of social stigma and limited access to healthcare resources.

Impact of a pharmacist-led oral chemotherapy monitoring clinic at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System.

As cancer treatments shift from traditional intravenous chemotherapy to inclusion of oral oncolytics, there is a critical need for structured oral chemotherapy monitoring and follow-up programs. To provide continuous care and minimize clinical gaps to Veterans receiving oral chemotherapy, the hematology/oncology clinical pharmacy practitioners designed and initiated a pilot, pharmacist-driven, Oral Chemotherapy Monitoring Clinic at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System supported by an oral chemotherapy certified pharmacy technician. A retrospective evaluation of patients receiving oral chemotherapy at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System was performed before (Phase I) and after (Phase II) pilot implementation to assess the impact of an Oral Chemotherapy Monitoring Clinic on compliance with drug-specific lab and symptom monitoring.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a debilitating mental illness characterized by adolescence or early adulthood onset of psychosis, positive and negative symptoms, as well as cognitive impairments. Despite a plethora of studies leveraging functional connectivity (FC) from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to predict symptoms and cognitive impairments of SZ, the findings have exhibited great heterogeneity. Risk of depression in persons with Alzheimer's disease: A national cohort study.

Introduction: Depression is a risk factor and possible prodromal symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but little is known about subsequent risk of developing depression in persons with AD.

Methods: National matched cohort study was conducted of all 129,410 persons diagnosed with AD and 390,088 with all-cause dementia during 1998-2017 in Sweden, and 3,900,880 age- and sex-matched controls without dementia, who had no prior depression. Cox regression was used to compute hazard ratios (HRs) for major depression through 2018.
