Consistent frontal-limbic-occipital connections in distinguishing treatment-resistant and non-treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

Neuroimage Clin

December 2024

College of Artificial Intelligence, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing, China; The Key Laboratory of Brain-Machine Intelligence Technology, Ministry of Education, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

Background And Hypothesis: Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TR-SZ) and non-treatment-resistant schizophrenia (NTR-SZ) lack specific biomarkers to distinguish from each other. This investigation aims to identify consistent dysfunctional brain connections with different atlases, multiple feature selection strategies, and several classifiers in distinguishing TR-SZ and NTR-SZ.

Study Design: 55 TR-SZs, 239 NTR-SZs, and 87 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from the Affiliated Brain Hospital of Nanjing Medical University.

Article Synopsis
  • Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is used to assess pleural movement in patients with advanced emphysema, but its effectiveness in these patients is not well established.
  • A study evaluated ultrasound findings in 48 COPD patients and found a significant number showed abnormal patterns, such as absent lung sliding or a barcode appearance.
  • Results indicated there is limited correlation between ultrasound abnormalities and standard lung function measures, highlighting a need for cautious interpretation of POCUS in these cases.

  • The systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy combined with physical activity (CBT+PA) or exercise (CBT+Ex) in children with chronic diseases compared to CBT alone.
  • The review included randomized clinical trials involving children under 18, focusing on interventions with objective measures of physical activity and exercise.
  • Findings showed a small, non-significant increase in physical activity and exercise in intervention groups compared to those receiving only CBT, highlighting the need for more comprehensive studies in this area.

Tobacco Smoking Functional Networks: A Whole-Brain Connectome Analysis in 24,539 Individuals.

Nicotine Tob Res

October 2024

Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America.

Introduction: Nicotine addiction, a multifaceted neuropsychiatric disorder, profoundly impacts brain functions through interactions with neural pathways. Despite its significance, the impact of tobacco smoking on the whole-brain functional connectome remains largely unexplored.

Methods: We conducted a whole-brain analysis on 24,539 adults aged 40 and above from the UK Biobank cohort.

  • * Research indicates that older mothers' gut microbiomes negatively impact pregnancy outcomes and offspring behavior, even when young mice are recolonized with the microbiome of older females before pregnancy.
  • * The study found that offspring from these older microbiome recolonized mothers exhibited increased fetal loss, persistent changes in gut microbiome composition, and developed anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, suggesting a link between maternal microbiome changes and neuropsychiatric risks in children.

Background: Pediatric high blood pressure (BP) predicts future cardiovascular disease events. High BP is improperly measured, underrecognized, and undermanaged especially in disadvantaged populations. In a large, diverse, academic pediatric practice, we detail the associations of a comprehensive initiative with high BP provider recognition.

Article Synopsis
  • The umbrella review aimed to analyze existing systematic reviews related to the 24-hour movement behaviors, which include physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep, focusing on their health benefits and adherence to guidelines.
  • Researchers examined a total of thirty-two reviews, which highlighted trends in movement behavior adherence across different age groups and global regions, noting a decrease in adherence from preschool to adolescence.
  • The findings consistently indicated positive relationships between meeting all three movement guidelines and improved physical and mental health outcomes, despite the varied methods used in the reviews.*

Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) plays an important role in pulmonary hypertension (PH) but the molecular mechanisms regulating EndoMT remain to be defined. We demonstrate that the axis of the transcription factors PPARγ (Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gamma) and ETV2 (ETS variant 2) play important roles in the pathogenesis of PH. Decreased levels of the expression of PPARγ and ETV2 along with reduced endothelial and increased EndoMT markers are consistently observed in lungs and pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAECs) of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension patients, in hypoxia-exposed mouse lungs, human PAECs, and in induced-EndoMT cells.

  • Compositional data analysis (CoDA) helps researchers look at how different daily activities like sleeping, sitting, and exercising are connected and affect health, which has become more popular over the last ten years.
  • A review of studies using CoDA found that while many did a good job explaining their methods, they were inconsistent in sharing other important details.
  • Out of 102 studies examined, things like how they measured activities and reported finding were done differently, showing a need for better and clearer reporting practices.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The COH-FIT study is a large, multi-country survey aimed at identifying factors affecting wellbeing and mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic, involving a representative sample of 121,066 adults.
  • Researchers analyzed both modifiable (like coping strategies and pre-pandemic stress) and non-modifiable factors (such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status), finding significant negative effects on wellbeing and psychopathology scores during the pandemic.
  • The study identified 15 modifiable and 9 non-modifiable risk factors, alongside 13 modifiable and 3 non-modifiable protective factors, emphasizing the importance of social support and coping strategies in mental health outcomes.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • There is a lack of comprehensive international studies examining multidimensional mental health and wellbeing before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly identifying at-risk groups and effective coping strategies.
  • The COH-FIT survey, conducted from April 2020 to June 2022 in 30 languages, assessed changes in well-being and psychopathology among over 121,000 participants, revealing significant declines in mental health during the pandemic.
  • Key findings indicated that certain demographics, such as young adults and people in low-income countries, were particularly affected, while coping strategies like exercise, internet use, and maintaining social contacts emerged as the most effective for managing stress.

This case report details a novel case of Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) in a 16-year-old boy with obesity and chronic cannabis use. Despite the absence of alcohol use disorder, this adolescent developed classic symptoms of WE, challenging the conventional diagnostic framework. Clinical suspicion for WE was supported by typical magnetic resonance imaging findings, low thiamine levels and rapid clinical improvement postintravenous thiamine supplementation.
