Good writing in dentistry involves both a depth of technical knowledge and experience and a command of more "classical" disciplines of knowledge and education, such as language, grammar, rhetoric, and logic. All of these factors influence the psychology and rhetorical interpretive mechanisms by which readers process and derive meaning from written text and are especially relevant to effective technical and medical writing.

The problem of treating and healing such patients is complex. Considerations encompass the safety and comfort of the child, the amount and difficulty of treatment needed, the level of the patient's anxiety and whether or not the patient is cooperative, the parent or guardian's attitude and level of trust, and whether or not the patient is physically resistant and, if so, the level of resistance. Other considerations are medicolegal implications, financial implications of treatment, insurance considerations, the dentist's and staff's training and experience, and the availability of sedation or general anesthesia.

In Part I we showed comical/satirical stereoviews of the 19 and early 20 centuries, dealing exclusively with ghastly, but comical images of tooth extractions. Humorous stereoviews were not the only dentistry related stereo cards. Stereoviews were used in advertising, education, and as keepsake souvenirs.

Silver has a long history of use in medicine and dentistry, as its powerful antimicrobial properties have benefited mankind immensely. Silver formulations can be traced back to Hippocrates, and silver nitrate has centuries of use in medicine, including being utilized intraorally since at least the early 1800s. In the past roughly 40 years, silver diammine fluoride (SDF) has been used in many parts of the world to treat tooth sensitivity and for chemical attenuation of dental caries lesions.

Objectives: Enamel organ epithelium (EOE) gives rise to the major epithelial-derived cell types of tooth including the ameloblasts. The formation of enamel, termed amelogenesis, occurs through the cytodifferentiation of ameloblasts, ultimately leading to apoptosis and necrosis of these cells with eruption. Therefore, studies regarding enamel matrix formation and bioengineering have been limited.

If one is searching for a perfect example of why the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was needed, this 1901 SWANSON'S RHEUMATIC CURE CO. foldover brochure would fit the bill (Figures 1A, 1B, and 1C). The SWANSON "FIVE DROP" REMEDIES were heralded as "the faithful guardian and sentinel of the human system" that "stands at the door and challenges every germ that knocks for admittance.

Focused Clinical Question: Can emerging technologies for periodontal regeneration become clinical reality? Summary: Emerging technologies are presenting options to hopefully improve the outcomes of regeneration in challenging clinical scenarios. Cellular allografts represent a current technology in which cells and scaffolds are being delivered directly to the periodontal lesion. Recombinant human fibroblast growth factor 2 and teriparatide (parathyroid 1-34) have each been tested in controlled prospective human randomized clinical trials, and both have been shown to have potential for periodontal regeneration.

The clinician faces treatment planning challenges when patients present with generalized severe chronic periodontitis that may result in tooth loss. This article provides a treatment planning discussion along with approaches for treating such patients. It presents the clinical question: What is the best means for approaching treatment planning in a patient with severe periodontitis requiring extraction and replacement of some teeth? Two treatment approaches are discussed—a reconstructive approach versus an adaptive one—both of which have an end goal of achieving periodontal health and occlusal stability, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Background: Historically, periodontal regeneration has focused predominantly on bone substitutes and/or barrier membrane application to provide for defect fill and/or selected cell repopulation of the lesion. More recently, a number of technologies have evolved that can be viewed as emerging therapeutic approaches for periodontal regeneration, and these technologies were considered in the review paper and by the consensus group. The goal of this consensus report on emerging regenerative approaches for periodontal hard and soft tissue reconstruction was to develop a consensus document based on the accompanying review paper and on additional materials submitted before and at the consensus group session.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by disruptions of normal sleep architecture. Chronic periodontitis is a chronic disease of the periodontium that elicits a general inflammatory response to local dental plaque. It has been suggested that periodontal disease may increase in severity with increasingly severe OSA because both disease entities share common inflammatory pathways, acting synergistically to alter the host response.

By using traditional casting procedures, accurately fitting of complete-arch frameworks that are screwed on multiple implants is difficult to achieve. The introduction of computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques for fabricating custom 1-piece titanium frameworks simplifies this challenge and reduces time spent by the restorative dentist. This report presents a milled titanium complete-arch mandibular framework using a new planning software and a new scanner using non-contact laser probe, which eliminates the need for wax pattern fabrication.

The early identification and treatment of cancer of the head and neck, including oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), is associated with an improved survival rate. Specific efforts to promote screening to improve the early detection of OPC have come under scrutiny, largely due to the low prevalence of the disease. However, screening the patient for OPC does not occur as an isolated event in contemporary practice, but as an integral component of the hard and soft tissue examination to determine the totality of the patient's oral health.
