Hepatitis E virus is a worldwide emerging foodborne pathogen; raw or undercooked meats and liver pork products can cause infection through the orofecal route. In Central-Southern Italy, small traditional farming method, associated with the possibility of environmental sharing with wild species, can facilitate HEV diffusion and persistence. The aim of this study was to determine HEV genotype and subtype in Marche region from home slaughtered domestic pigs involved in small and traditional food chains.

Neuroinflammation is a hallmark of several neurodegenerative disorders that has been extensively studied in recent years. Microglia, the primary immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), are key players in this physiological process, demonstrating a remarkable adaptability in responding to various stimuli in the eye and the brain. Within the complex network of neuroinflammatory signals, the fatty acid N-ethanolamines, in particular N-arachidonylethanolamine (anandamide, AEA), emerged as crucial regulators of microglial activity under both physiological and pathological states.

During tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), the laceration of the cranial tibial artery (LCTA) may occur, and the ligation of the cranial tibial artery might lead to impaired blood supply to the osteotomy site. The present case-control study aimed to evaluate the effect of LCTA on TPLO healing and the occurrence of perioperative complications. The incidence and predisposing factors to LCTA were also investigated.

A one-shot CO laser-based strategy to generate conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated with nanoceria (nCe) is proposed. The 2D/0D rGO-nCe films, integrated as catalytic sensing layers in paper-based sensors, were employed for on-site monitoring of indoor fogging treatments against Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), a ubiquitous pathogenic bacterium. The rGO-nCe laser-assisted synthesis was optimized to preserve the rGO film morphological and electron-transfer features and simultaneously integrate catalytic nCe.

This process is orchestrated by specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM), a class of bioactive lipids able to reduce immune activation and promote removal of tissue debris and apoptotic cells by macrophages. Although SPMs are the lipid class that has been best studied for its role in facilitating the resolution of self-limited inflammation, a number of other lipid signals, including endocannabinoids, also exert protective immunomodulatory effects on immune cells, including macrophages.

This study explores the effect of spray-drying (SD) inlet temperatures (T 120 and 150 °C) and wall material on the chemical and physico-chemical properties of microencapsulated hop extracts (MHE). Hop extract was formulated with maltodextrin (MD) and gum Arabic (GA) used in single or in combination with β-cyclodextrin (βCD). MHE were evaluated for physical properties, bitter acids (BA), total polyphenol content (TPC) and encapsulation efficiency (TPC EE), and antioxidant capacity (AOC).

, or intestinal emphysema, is a condition characterized by the presence of multiple cystic structures within the gut wall and on the serosal surface of the intestine. Intestinal emphysema represents an accidental finding in swine, although it can be clinically relevant in humans. Its etiology is unknown, and many theories have been proposed.

This study investigated the main microbial groups characterizing the interior surface of oak barrels from different years (1890, 1895, 1920, 1975, 2008) used in the production of vino cotto. The yeasts were characterized for the following properties: γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production, antioxidant activity, air-liquid interfacial biofilm formation, and anthocyanin adsorption capacity. Community-level physiological profile analysis revealed that the microbial communities inside the barrels used the tested carbon sources in different manners.

In recent years, biomonitoring has gained more attention, particularly when assessing the environmental health of significant areas, such as those near waste-to-energy facilities. These requirements coincide with the chance to detect environmental pollutants using sensitive organisms. Bees were shown to be quite effective in evaluating the presence of certain compounds by analyzing their associated matrices, such as pollen, honey, or wax.

(1) The main goals of general anesthesia include pain management and a safe anesthetic protocol for smooth recovery. In this retrospective study, we compared two anesthetic protocols for general anesthesia with isoflurane during emergency laparotomy: sedation with xylazine and the intraoperative infusion of lidocaine (X group) versus medetomidine as a preoperative sedation and intraoperative infusion (M group). (2) The medical records of horses who underwent emergency laparotomies between 2016 and 2023 were reviewed.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a globally prevalent contaminant of concern recognised for its persistence and detrimental effects on both wildlife and humans. While PFOA has been established as a disruptor of thyroid function, limited data exist regarding its impact on thyroid morphology. The kidney of the common carp () harbours numerous thyroid follicles, rendering it a valuable biomarker organ for investigating PFOA-induced thyroid alterations.

Quantification of trace element concentrations in human and animal tissues has acquired great importance in the last few years, considering the pivotal role of these elements in several physiological and pathological processes. Variations in their concentrations appear to have a role in the development and advancement of diseases in both humans and animals, for example, cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concentration of rare earth elements and metals in healthy and neoplastic Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) mammary gland tissue of dogs.

Regenerative medicine harnesses stem cells' capacity to restore damaged tissues and organs. In vitro methods employing specific bioactive molecules, such as growth factors, bio-inductive scaffolds, 3D cultures, co-cultures, and mechanical stimuli, steer stem cells toward the desired differentiation pathways, mimicking their natural development. Chondrogenesis presents a challenge for regenerative medicine.

Objective: Binge-eating disorder is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge-eating episodes, during which individuals consume excessive amounts of highly palatable food (HPF) in a short time. This study investigates the intricate relationship between repeated binge-eating episode and the transcriptional regulation of two key genes, adenosine A receptor (AAR) and dopamine D2 receptor (D2R), in selected brain regions of rats.
Method: Binge-like eating behavior on HPF was induced through the combination of food restrictions and frustration stress (15 min exposure to HPF without access to it) in female rats, compared to control rats subjected to only restriction or only stress or none of these two conditions.

Herein, a strategy to stamp laser-produced reduced graphene oxide (rGO) onto flexible polymers using only office-grade tools, namely, roll-to-roll thermal stamping, is proposed, proving for the first time its effectiveness for direct bioelectrocatalysis. This straightforward, scalable, and low-cost approach allows us to overcome the limits of the integration of laser-induced rGO-films in bioanalytical devices. Laser-produced rGO has been thermally stamped (TS) onto different polymeric substrates (PET, PVC, and EVA) using a simple roll-laminator; the obtained TS-rGO films have been compared with the native rGO (untransferred) via morphochemical and electrochemical characterization.

Placental abnormalities more frequently occur during pregnancy of somatic cell clones and may lead to pregnancy loss or dystocia. Adventitious placentation, or diffuse semi-placenta, is determined by the development of areas of accessory placentation between the cotyledons due to the abnormal growth of placentomes. After a full-term pregnancy, a 3-year-old Jersey heifer was referred for dystocia which resulted in the delivery of a dead calf.
