Background Intensive systolic blood pressure treatment (<120 mm Hg) in SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial) improved survival compared with standard treatment (<140 mm Hg) over a median follow-up of 3.3 years. We projected life expectancy after observed follow-up in SPRINT using SPRINT-eligible participants in the NHLBI-PCS (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Pooled Cohorts Study).

Background: Studies indicate that uninterrupted anticoagulation (UA) is superior to interrupted anticoagulation (IA) in the periprocedural period during catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation. Still IA is followed in many centers considering the bleeding risk. This meta-analysis compares interrupted and uninterrupted direct oral anticoagulation during catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation.

There is little understanding of the role of Orai channels in cardiomyocytes, and its role in cardiac function remains unexplored. Thus, we developed mice lacking Orai1 and Orai3 to address their role in cardiac homeostasis.

Objectives: Colloid carcinoma (CC) of the pancreas is associated with an improved prognosis compared with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), yet studies on the optimal management of these rare lesions are lacking.
Methods: Patients with CC or PDAC treated from 2004 to 2014 were identified in the National Cancer Database. Clinicopathologic characteristics were compared between groups and stratified by disease stage.
Background: Sex or gender disparity in skin cancer has been documented for a long time at the population level. UV radiation (UVR) is a common environmental risk for all three major types of skin cancer: cutaneous melanoma (CM), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). The underlying mechanism for sex disparity has been largely attributed to sex-differentiated behaviour patterns related to UVR.

Background: Recent trials in liver machine perfusion (MP) have revealed unique challenges beyond those seen in most clinical studies. Correct trial design and interpretation of data are essential to avoid drawing conclusions that may compromise patient safety and increase costs.
Methods: The International Liver Transplantation Society, through the Special Interest Group "DCD, Preservation and Machine Perfusion," established a working group to write consensus statements and guidelines on how future clinical trials in liver perfusion should be designed, with particular focus on relevant clinical endpoints and how different techniques of liver perfusion should be compared.
Background Sex is a prominent risk factor for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), and angiotensin II (Ang II) induces AAA formation to a greater degree in male than in female mice. We previously reported that cytochrome P450 1B1 contributes to the development of hypertension, as well as AAAs, in male mice. We also found that a cytochrome P450 1B1-generated metabolite of testosterone, 6β-hydroxytestosterone (6β-OHT), contributes to Ang II-induced hypertension and associated cardiovascular and renal pathogenesis in male mice.

Individuals who demonstrate or self-report poorer EF performance tend to have poorer short-term outcomes in obesity treatment. There may be distinct behavioral self-management strategies and EF domains related to initial weight loss as compared to weight loss maintenance.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether instituting an alternative to opioids (ALTO) protocol significantly reduced opioid use in emergency departments (EDs). The secondary objective was to determine whether patient-reported pain and satisfaction were affected.
Methods: Electronic health records for 10 EDs in Colorado were retrospectively examined for the 6 months before the intervention and for the same 6 months the following year after the intervention, which consisted of systemic and educational initiatives in line with the .
Pulmonary cysts and neoplasms, especially congenital or occurring at a young age, should be thoroughly investigated. Evaluation for mutations should be performed if there is a family history of this syndrome, the lung cyst/neoplasm is a pleuropulmonary blastoma, or other clinical manifestations of this syndrome are present or develop.

The TP53 gene has been widely studied for its roles in cell cycle control, maintaining genome stability, activating repair mechanisms upon DNA damage, and initiating apoptosis should repair mechanisms fail. Thus, it is not surprising that mutations of p53 are the most common genetic alterations found in human cancer. Emerging evidence indicates that dysregulation of lipid metabolism by p53 can have a profound impact not only on cancer cells but also cells of the tumor microenvironment (TME).

This study was conducted to evaluate the extent to which disease-modifying antirheumatic medications (DMARDs) used as part of a triple therapy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) including methotrexate, sulfasalazine, and hydroxychloroquine are associated with fractures in postmenopausal women with RA. Incident fractures following use of methotrexate, sulfasalazine, and/or hydroxychloroquine in postmenopausal women with RA in the Women's Health Initiative were estimated by Cox proportional hazards using hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs after consideration of potential confounders. There were 1201 women with RA enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative included in these analyses, of which 74% were white, 17% were black, and 9% were of other or unknown race/ethnicity.

Study Objective: This study evaluated the association of race and socioeconomic status with the rate of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Memphis, TN and compared it to 25 years prior.
Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest events in the Memphis area from 2012-2018. The primary outcome of interest was the provision of bystander CPR.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the signaling pathway that is immediately triggered by status epilepticus (SE) and in turn contributes to the excessive brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tropomyosin-related kinase receptor B (TrkB) signaling within the hippocampus.
Methods: We used quantitative PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blot analysis to examine gene expression at both mRNA and protein levels in the hippocampus following prolonged SE in mice and rats. Three classical animal models of SE were utilized in the present study to avoid any model- or species-specific findings.
