This work investigated the impact of chicken egg size, including surface area and initial weight, on the effectiveness of cassava starch-based gel coating during storage at room temperature. The quality of a total of 540 fresh eggs in four different sizes (S, M, L and XL) was evaluated over a 4-week storage period at 25 ± 1 °C (60-65% RH). In this research, images from a scanning electron microscope revealed that the coatings maintained their integrity across all egg sizes, effectively covering pores and cracks throughout storage.

In this study, we present a novel approach to injection molding, focusing on the strength of weld lines in polyamide 6 (PA6) composite samples. By implementing a mold temperature significantly higher than the typical molding practice, which rarely exceeds 100°C, we assess the effects of advanced mold temperature management. The research introduces a newly engineered mold structure specifically designed for localized mold heating, distinguishing it as the 'novel cavity.

Herein, we report for the first time a simple strategy to design a hierarchical chemically exfoliated magnesium diboride and guar gum network structure decorated with Ru nanoparticles (eMgB-GG@Ru) as an electrode to evaluate its electrochemical performance for the application of supercapacitor. The eMgB and functionalized eMgB-GG@Ru materials were thoroughly examined using XRD, TGA, DLS, FE-SEM, STEM, AFM, XPS, and BET techniques. The combined eMgB-GG@Ru electrode exhibits a network structure morphology with an increased interlayer distance of eMgB nanolayers along with a uniform distribution of spherical Ru nanoparticles.

Retinal vessel segmentation is crucial for the diagnosis of ophthalmic and cardiovascular diseases. However, retinal vessels are densely and irregularly distributed, with many capillaries blending into the background, and exhibit low contrast. Moreover, the encoder-decoder-based network for retinal vessel segmentation suffers from irreversible loss of detailed features due to multiple encoding and decoding, leading to incorrect segmentation of the vessels.

There are various indoor fingerprint localization techniques utilizing the similarity of received signal strength (RSS) to discriminate the similarity of positions. However, due to the varied states of different wireless access points (APs), each AP's contribution to RSS similarity varies, which affects the accuracy of localization. In our study, we analyzed several critical causes that affect APs' contribution, including APs' health states and APs' positions.

Optimizing the Tensile Strength of Weld Lines in Glass Fiber Composite Injection Molding.

Materials (Basel)

July 2024

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Van Bao Street, Ward 4, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City 70000, Vietnam.

Weld line defects, commonly occurring during the plastic product manufacturing process, are caused by the merging of two opposing streams of molten plastic. The presence of weld lines harms the product's aesthetic appeal and durability. This study uses artificial neural networks to forecast the ultimate tensile strength of a PA6 composite incorporating 30% glass fibers (GFs).

Centre for Material Science, College of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of South Africa, Johannesburg 1709, South Africa; Institute for Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability, College of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of South Africa, Johannesburg 1709, South Africa.

Herein, we reported the dual functions of molybdenum disulfide/sulfur-doped graphitic carbon nitride (MoS/SGCN) composite as a sensing material for electrochemical detection of 4-NP and a catalyst for 4-NP degradation. The MoS nanosheet, sulfur-doped graphitic carbon nitride (SGCN) and MoS/SGCN were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical characterization of these materials with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1 mM K[Fe(CN)] show that the composite has the lowest charge transfer resistance and the best electrocatalytic activity.

Distinct Valley Polarization in Vertical Heterobilayers: Difference between Edge- and Center-Nucleated WS/MoS.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

July 2024

Department of Semiconductor Physics & Engineering and Energy Harvest-Storage Research Center, University of Ulsan, Ulsan 44610, South Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Structural imperfections in TMDs can both help and hinder their excitonic properties, affecting valley polarization.
  • In center-nucleated vertical heterobilayers, defects are healed, leading to reduced defect-related photoluminescence and more stable valley polarization, especially for lower-lying excitons.
  • However, at low temperatures, valley depolarization becomes significant due to defect state hybridization, and the study also explores how electron doping impacts this process.
