Improving Lynch syndrome detection: a mixed-methods process evaluation of a hybrid type III effectiveness-implementation trial.

BMC Health Serv Res

December 2024

Implementation to Impact (i2i), School of Population Health, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW, Samuels Building, Sydney, NSW, 2052, Australia.

Introduction: Translating evidence-based practices into real-world healthcare settings is challenging, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of genomics. A pragmatic two-arm cluster-randomized clinical trial (Hide and Seek Project - HaSP) tested two implementation approaches for improving hereditary cancer referral practices with one key distinction: implementation strategies that were designed 1) explicitly using psychological theory, or 2) using healthcare professional intuition. This mixed-methods process evaluation aimed to provide insights into how and why change occurred by examining contextual determinants, identifying mechanisms of action, and exploring the role of theory.

Optimizing cover crop practices as a sustainable solution for global agroecosystem services.

Nat Commun

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Green Utilization of Critical Non-metallic Mineral Resources, Ministry of Education, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan, China.

The practice of cover crops has gained popularity as a strategy to improve agricultural sustainability, but its full potential is often limited by environmental trade-offs. Using meta-analytic and data-driven quantifications of 2302 observations, we optimized cover crop practices and evaluated their benefits for global agroecosystems. Cover crops have historically boosted crop yields, soil carbon storage, and stability, but also stimulated greenhouse gas emissions.

Portable x-ray fluorescent (pXRF) technology provides significant opportunities for rapid, non-destructive data collection in a range of fields of study. However, there are sources of variation and sample assumptions that may influence the data obtained, particularly in animal samples. We used representative species for four taxa (fish, mammals, birds, reptiles) to test the precision of replicate scans, and the impact of sample thickness, sample state, scan location and scan time on data obtained from a pXRF.

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) demonstrate plenty of unique properties due to the band structure. Symmetry breaking brings second-order susceptibility to meaningful values resulting in the enhancement of corresponding nonlinear effects. Cooling the TMDC films to cryogenic temperatures leads to the emergence of two distinct photoluminescence peaks caused by the exciton and trion formation.

The study of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) is growing rapidly in polymer chemistry. The dynamic covalent chemistry of polyaminals formed by the reaction of linear polyethyleneimine (L-PEI) with various functional aldehydes is explored. The study demonstrates the pH-dependent kinetics of polyaminal formation and the versatility of polyaminals in controlling the release of aldehydes under ambient conditions.

Background: Elite athletes experience unique pressures and cognitions associated with disordered eating, which may not be appropriately captured by existing tools. The Athletic Disordered Eating (ADE) scale is a recently developed and first measure of disordered eating specifically developed and validated in current and former athletes. This study aimed to provide further validation for the ADE in an independent sample of elite athletes.

There is a global initiative to reduce the use of restrictive care practices in mental health settings. Variations in the reported rates across regions complicate the understanding of their use and tracking trends over time. However, it remains unclear whether these discrepancies reflect real differences in the implementation of these practices or are sourced from inconsistencies in incident classification and reporting methods.

Trauma-informed practice for genetic counselors: Insights from a workshop evaluation.

J Genet Couns

December 2024

New South Wales Department of Education, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia.

Trauma-informed practice (TIP) is an emerging model of care that acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma and emphasizes both physical and psychological safety for consumer and provider. It is being increasingly integrated into models of healthcare delivery, organizational policies, and practices, and has been shown to improve clinical interactions, increase treatment adherence, and improve healthcare outcomes. However, to date, TIP has not yet been systematically integrated into genetic counseling training and practice.

The potential regulation of the miR-17-92a cluster by miR-21.

Int J Biochem Cell Biol

January 2025

School of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, and Information Technology,  University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Electronic address:

MicroRNAs (miRNA,miRs) are small noncoding RNAs that are ubiquitously expressed in all mammalian cells. Their primary function is the regulation of nascent RNA transcripts by direct binding to regions on the target. There is now exciting data to suggest that these miRNAs can bind to other miRNAs, and this may have a broader impact on gene regulation in disease states.
