Implantation of subcutaneous port systems is routinely performed in patients requiring repeated long-term infusion therapy. Ultrasound- and fluoroscopy-guided implantation under local anesthesia is broadly established in interventional radiology and has decreased the rate of complications compared to the surgical approach. This review focuses on current aspects of the novel technology of combined impedance manometry for esophageal motility testing. It presents methodological features, summarizes current results and discusses implications for further research. The combined technique assesses simultaneously bolus transport and associated peristalsis, thus allowing detailed analysis of the relationships between bolus transit and esophageal motility.

Background: Preliminary results of combined neoadjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and postradiation interferon beta (IFN-beta) in children and adolescents with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, especially in high-risk patients, have been promising.

Methods: From 1992 to 2003, 59 patients (58 high-risk patients and 1 low-risk patient, median age 13 yrs; range, 8-25 yrs) were treated in the GPOH-NPC-91 study. The Stage II patient received irradiation as initial therapy.

The purpose of the study was to obtain reference values for the sizes of anatomical structures of the inner ear on computed tomography (CT) images and to compare these values with those obtained from patients with Menière's disease. CT images of the temporal bone of 67 patients without inner ear pathology and 53 patients with Menière's disease have been evaluated. The aim of the present study was to determine whether processing of syntactic word information (lemma) is subserved by the same neural substrate as processing of conceptual or word form information (lexeme). We measured BOLD responses in 14 native speakers of German in three different decision tasks, each focussing specifically on one level of lexical processing (conceptual, syntactic, and morpho-phonological). Purpose: The aim of the current study was to compare 3-dimensional T2-weighted turbo spin-echo (TSE) axial slices, maximum-intensity projections (MIPs), and volume-rendered images with respect to the delineation of pathologic findings and anatomic structures of the inner ear. Each of the compared image types was available at 2 different resolutions.

Legislation at the national level in Europe as well as that developed by the European Union (EU) generally permits release and commercialization of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). However, only 10 plant/event combinations were registered as of 2002: three maize events (Bt176, Mon810, and Bt11), with the other seven divided among carnation (3), oil-seed rape (2), tobacco (1), and raddiccio (1). Of these, only one maize event (Bt176) has been registered as a legal variety, and this was in Spain, where 22,000ha have been planted annually since 1998.

Dysfunction of central serotonergic activity has been assumed in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) characterized by a prominent impulsive behavioral style. Following the high serotonergic innervation of the primary auditory cortex, there is increasing evidence of the intensity dependence of auditory evoked potentials (AEP), especially the N1/P2 component, indicating serotonergic neurotransmission in animals and humans. 15 females who met the IPDE-criteria for BPD and a group of comparative healthy females (controls) completed extensive personality questionnaires which gave special regard to impulsiveness.

Hallucinogenic drug-induced states are considered as models for acute schizophrenic disorders (experimental psychoses). In a double-blind study with healthy volunteers we investigated the influence of the serotonergic hallucinogen psilocybin, the ecstasy-like drug 3,4-methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDE), the stimulant d- methamphetamine and placebo on covert orienting of spatial attention (n = 8 in each group). Reaction times were prolonged after ingestion of psilocybin > MDE, but not after d-methamphetamine.

Objective: To evaluate virtually the reliability of freehand puncture of the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle and to provide realistic, but unbloody training for young neurosurgeons.

Methods: Virtual placement of ventricular catheters was performed repeatedly by neurosurgical doctors and thereafter controlled by neuronavigation. With the help of a frameless stereotactic navigation device they virtually had to hit the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle on the MRI of 29 brains with normal ventricular sizes and 60 pathological ventricles, respectively.

Pseudoachondroplasia is an inherited skeletal dysplasia with short-limbed dwarfism and early onset of osteoarthritis. A 29-year-old pseudoachondroplastic woman presented with progressively painful hips secondary to severe osteoarthritis of both joints, so that total joint replacements were necessary to restore her mobility and quality of life. The implants inserted had to be specifically manufactured in accordance with the individual geometry and reduced bone size.

Distortion caused by local static field variations in magnetic resonance imaging can be corrected by using a method developed by Chang and Fitzpatrick (CF) that requires two acquisitions identical except for the polarity of the read gradient. This approach has previously been applied to spin-echo imaging. In this report, its role in correcting geometric distortion in gradient-echo imaging is investigated using a dynamic programming algorithm.
