Parasitic plants are a diverse and unique polyphyletic assemblage of flowering plants that survive by obtaining resources via direct vascular connections to a host plant. Ecologically important in their native ecosystems, these typically cryptic plants remain understudied and fundamental knowledge of the biology, ecology, and evolution of most species is lacking. This gap limits our understanding of ecosystems and conservation management.

CuI-mediated cyclization methodology helped yield benzimidazoles with different substitution manner, such as 1,2-diarylbenzimidazoles (4 and 5) and 1-arylbenzimidazoles (6-15). The result of structure-activity relationship (SAR) study confirmed the significance of the 5,6,7-trimethoxybenzimidazole moiety, and the representative derivatives (8-10) exhibited marked antiproliferative activity against A549, HCT-116, and PC-3 cells; in addition, they are able to inhibit the polymerization of tubulin. Among them, compound 10 inhibited the growth of A549, HCT-116, and PC-3 cells with a mean IC value of 0.

Recent studies indicate that umbilical cord stem cells are cytoprotective against several disorders. One critical limitation in using stem cells is reduction in their viability under stressful conditions, such as diabetes. However, the molecular intricacies responsible for diabetic conditions are not fully elucidated.

The molecular difference between synchronous and metachronous metastases in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. Between 2000 and 2010, a total of 492 CRC patients were enrolled, including 280 with synchronous metastasis and 212 with metachronous metastasis. Clinicopathological and molecular features were compared between the two groups.

, a newly described horsehair worm that parasitizes the millipede, is one of the three described horsehair worm species in Taiwan. It is morphologically similar to Schmidt-Rhaesa, 2010 because of the progressively broadening distribution of bristles concentrated on the male tail lobes, but it is distinguishable from because of the stout bristles on the mid-body. In addition, a vertical white stripe on the anterior ventral side and areoles on the inside wall of the cloacal opening are rarely mentioned in other species.

Gold nanorods (GNRs) with desired longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) and strong scattering intensity are important for extending their practical applications in bioimaging and sensing. Herein, a simple additive (HCl and NaS)-regulated overgrowth approach has been proposed for preparing GNRs with tunable LLSPR. In this approach, HCl is used to slow down the growth reaction rate by changing chemical equilibrium, while NaS is utilized to halt the reaction when LLSPR is reaching the expected wavelength under monitoring by a UV-Vis spectrometer.

Previous studies have found that in East Asian Confucian societies, hardworking students are often trapped in a dilemma of enjoying a positive moral image while suffering from emotional distress due to academic failure. This study intends to further explore whether the cultural-specific belief in self-exertion acts as a psychological mechanism to lessen these students' negative emotions. A group of 288 college students in Taiwan were administered a questionnaire to record their responses to past academic failures.

Respondents are often requested to provide a response to Likert-type or rating-scale items during the assessment of attitude, interest, and personality to measure a variety of latent traits. Extreme response style (ERS), which is defined as a consistent and systematic tendency of a person to locate on a limited number of available rating-scale options, may distort the test validity. Several latent trait models have been proposed to address ERS, but all these models have limitations.

The main purpose of this two-part study was to examine the effects of acute, moderate intensity exercise on task switching in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In Study 1, we compared the task switching performance of children with and without ADHD. Twenty children with ADHD and 20 matched controls performed the task switching paradigm, in which the behavioral indices and P3 component of event-related potentials elicited by task-switching were assessed simultaneously.

Baicalein is a component of the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, which has traditionally been used to treat liver disease in China. In the present study, we investigated baicalein' ability to reduce the liver injury induced by myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Myocardial I/R was induced in this experiment by a 40[Formula: see text]min occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery and a 3[Formula: see text]h reperfusion in rats.
