The most prominent explanation for the spatial numerical association of response codes (SNARC) effect is the direct mapping account (DMA). The DMA assumes that (a) numbers are represented on a mental number line, (b) this mental number line is mapped to external space, and (c) the better the mapping location corresponds to the response location, the faster the response. The DMA leaves open whether a variation of response locations can (ceteris paribus) influence the location to which numbers are mapped in external space.

Three models are presented, which describe the aggregation of objects into groups and the distributions of groups sizes and group numbers within habitats. The processes regarded are pure accumulation processes which involve only formation and invasion of groups. Invasion represents the special case of fusion when only single objects - and not groups - join a group of certain size.

Mature specimens of the isopod Oniscus asellus were maintained on soil and leaf litter to which was added different concentrations of either benzo[a]pyren (B[a]P), 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB52), gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH), or pentachlorophenol (PCP) for a maximum of 14 days. Time-dependent investigation of the body level of the 70 kD stress protein group (hsp70) in the isopods revealed a significant but transient induction of the hsp70 response after about 24 h of exposure to PCB52 or B[a]P. Despite continuous exposure, the hsp70 level decreased subsequently and ended up close to or below the control level independent of the concentration of PCB52 or B[a]P in the substrate.

The most notable feature of DNA extracted from prehistoric material is that it is of poor quality. Amplification of PCR products from such DNA is consequently an exception. Here we present a simple method for the repair of degraded duplex DNA using the enzymes Escherichia coli DNA polymerase I and T4 DNA ligase.

Potent polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and dioxinlike polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are among the most relevant toxic emissions from incinerators. Induction of cytochrome P450 1A1-catalyzed 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity in mammalian cell culture (EROD bioassay) is thought to be a selective and sensitive parameter used for the quantification of dioxinlike compounds. Fly ash extracts from municipal waste incinerators (MWI), a crematorium, wood combustors, and a noble metal recycling facility were analyzed in the EROD bioassay using rat hepatocytes in primary culture.

This report investigates children's analogical reasoning in a physics task, using an analogy generated by the children rather than by the experimenter. A total of 127 elementary school children took part in three related studies. Children learned to predict the behavior of a balance scale.
