The recently developed V79-RBEbiological weighting function (BWF) model is a simple and robust tool for a fast relative biological effectiveness (RBE) assessment for comparing different exposure conditions in particle therapy. In this study, the RBEderived by this model (through the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) simulated d(y) spectra) is compared with values of RBEusing experimentally derived d(y) spectra from a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) microdosimeter. Approach: Experimentally measured d(y) spectra are used to calculate an RBEvalue utilizing the V79-RBEBWF model as well as the modified microdosimetric kinetic model (MKM) to produce an RBE-vs-ytrend for a wide range of ions.

Physical activity participation is critical for optimal physical, psychological, and cognitive health in children and adults living with congenital heart disease (CHD). Majority of the general population are not sufficiently active, and with the added psychological, physical, and socioeconomic barriers faced by individuals with CHD, it is unsurprising that many people living with CHD do not meet the recommendations for physical activity either. The aim of this review is to outline lifelong physical activity barriers faced by individuals living with CHD and provide age-appropriate strategies that can be used to ensure the development of long-term positive physical activity behaviours.

Background And Aims: The efficacy of colorectal endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is limited by recurrence and the necessity for conservative surveillance. Margin thermal ablation (MTA) after EMR has reduced the incidence of recurrence at the first surveillance colonoscopy at 6 months (SC1). Whether this effect is durable to second surveillance colonoscopy (SC2) is unknown.

Background: Recognition of submucosal invasive cancer (SMIC) in large (≥20 mm) nonpedunculated colonic polyps (LNPCPs) informs selection of the optimal resection strategy. LNPCP location, morphology, and size influence the risk of SMIC; however, currently no meaningful application of this information has simplified the process to make it accessible and broadly applicable. We developed a decision-making algorithm to simplify the identification of LNPCP subtypes with increased risk of potential SMIC.

Because of concerns about peri-procedural adverse events (AEs), guidelines recommend anesthetist-managed sedation (AMS) for long and complex endoscopic procedures. The safety and efficacy of physician-administered balanced sedation (PA-BS) for endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of large non-pedunculated colorectal polyps (LNPCPs) ≥20 mm is unknown. We compared PA-BS with AMS in a retrospective study of prospectively collected data from consecutive patients referred for management of LNPCPs (NCT01368289; NCT02000141).

Background: Non-achalasia esophageal motility disorders (NAEMDs), encompassing distal esophageal spasm (DES) and hypercontractile esophagus (HCE), are rare conditions. Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a promising treatment option. In NAEMDs, unlike with achalasia, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) functions normally, suggesting the potential of LES preservation during POEM.

Endoscopic resection (ER) is recommended for the management of duodenal neuroendocrine tumors (D-NETs) confined to the submucosal layer, without lymph node or distant metastasis. While this is accepted practice for lesions < 10 mm, consensus for larger lesions remains unclear. Although endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been proposed as the preferred ER technique for DNETs ≥10 mm, there are limited data on efficacy and safety, particularly in the Western setting.

Background: Cold snare polypectomy (CSP) is safer than and equally efficacious as hot snare polypectomy (HSP) for the removal of small (<10mm) colorectal polyps. The maximum polyp size that can be effectively managed by piecemeal CSP (p-CSP) without an excessive burden of recurrence is unknown.
Methods: Resection error risks (RERs), defined as the estimated likelihood of incomplete removal of adenomatous tissue for a single snare resection pass, for CSP and HSP were calculated, based on an incomplete resection rate.

Background: The rate of anaphylaxis following COVID-19 vaccinations is estimated to be 2-11 cases per million doses administered. However, adrenaline is occasionally used in individuals who are later diagnosed with immunisation stress-related responses, as their initial presenting signs and symptoms can appear similar to that of anaphylaxis. This study aims to describe the clinical profile of individuals who had received adrenaline following a COVID-19 vaccine and their subsequent revaccination outcomes.

Despite developments in surgical techniques and medical care, people with a Fontan circulation still experience long-term complications; non-invasive therapies to optimize the circulation have not been established. Exercise intolerance affects the majority of the population and is associated with worse prognosis. Historically, people living with a Fontan circulation were advised to avoid physical activity, but a small number of heterogenous, predominantly uncontrolled studies have shown that exercise training is safe-and for unique reasons, may even be of heightened importance in the setting of Fontan physiology.

Background: Using personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of several fundamental measures to prevent the transmission of infection and infectious diseases and is particularly pertinent in the current COVID-19 pandemic. Appropriate use of PPE by healthcare workers is, however, often suboptimal. Training and monitoring of PPE competency are essential components of an infection prevention and control program but there is a paucity of research and data on the content of such training programs across Australasia.

molecular type VGII is one of the etiologic agents of cryptococcosis, a systemic mycosis affecting a wide range of host species. Koalas () exhibit a comparatively high prevalence of cryptococcosis (clinical and subclinical) and nasal colonization, particularly in captivity. In Australia, disease associated with VGII is typically confined to Western Australia and the Northern Territory (with sporadic cases reported in eastern Australia), occupying an enigmatic ecologic niche.
