Clarifying the correlation between soil organic carbon (SOC) and crop yield is key to achieving carbon neutrality and ensuring food security. However, owing to the lack of analysis based on large-scale farmland monitoring data and research on deep soil, relevant research has not yet reached a consensus. Here, we based on the monitoring data of 118 sample plots from 21 typical farmland and farmland compound ecosystem stations of the China Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) between 2004 and 2020, the temporal and spatial coupling associations between SOC content and crop yield in 0-20 cm and 0-100 cm soil layers and its factors influencing were determined.

Protocol for the co-design of an online support service for adults with hearing loss.

PLoS One

September 2024

Macquarie University Hearing Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Introduction: Untreated hearing loss is reported to negatively impact on an individual's quality of life, affecting their psychological and physical health and placing them at greater risk of developing dementia. Despite this, hearing loss management is often delayed by up to a decade. This is likely due to difficulties in navigating the hearing care pathway, and the absence of a central, unbiased reference point for consumer-friendly hearing health information and resources.

Background: Multiple sclerosis is a common inflammatory neurological disease among young adults and is the tenth leading cause of the global burden of disease. Existing common treatments such as pharmacological and palliative therapies do not control the neurodegenerative process or cure multiple sclerosis. Numerous epidemiological surveys, randomised controlled trials, and systematic reviews with meta-analyses support the effects of physical activity on health-related outcomes among patients with multiple sclerosis.

May 2024

Community and Patient Preference Research Pty Ltd, CaPPRe, Level 5, 478 George St, Sydney, Australia. Electronic address:

Subjective well-being (SWB) describes an individual's life evaluation. Direct elicitation methods for SWB via rating scales do not force individuals to trade-off among life domains, whilst best-worst scaling (BWS) approaches only provide relative measures. This paper instead offers a dual-response BWS task, where respondents nominate areas of most and least importance and satisfaction with respect to 11 SWB domains, whilst also eliciting anchoring points to obtain an absolute measure of domain satisfaction.

(Re)imagining purpose: A framework for sustainable nanotechnology innovation.

NanoImpact

July 2024

Sydney Nano Institute, The University of Sydney, NSW 2006, Australia; Sydney Pharmacy School, The University of Sydney, NSW 2006, Australia. Electronic address:

To fully understand and predict the impact of nanotechnologies, a truly multidisciplinary approach is required. However, the practicalities relating to how innovation, commercialisation, risk assessment, informatics, and governance in nanotechnology should intersect remain somewhat of a black box. To begin to shed light on this intersection, we identify a need to place 'purpose' at the heart of the nanotechnology innovation ecosystem.

Implicit leadership theories (ILTs) are people's lay theories, definitions, or conceptualizations of leadership. In adults, they determine what actions we perceive as leadership, influence to whom we grant leadership status, and shape our own behaviors when we want to be seen as leader. Naturally, there has been an enduring interest in how these ILTs develop in children.

Introduction: Social adaptation is a multifaceted process that encompasses cognitive, social, and affective factors. Previous research often focused on isolated variables, overlooking their interactions, especially in challenging environments. Our study addresses this by investigating how cognitive (working memory, verbal intelligence, self-regulation), social (affective empathy, family networks, loneliness), and psychological (locus of control, self-esteem, perceived stress) factors interact to influence social adaptation.

Beijing Key Laboratory of Multimedia and Intelligent Software Technology, Beijing Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Information Technology, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing 100124, China.

In the realm of long document classification (LDC), previous research has predominantly focused on modeling unimodal texts, overlooking the potential of multi-modal documents incorporating images. To address this gap, we introduce an innovative approach for multi-modal long document classification based on the Hierarchical Prompt and Multi-modal Transformer (HPMT). The proposed HPMT method facilitates multi-modal interactions at both the section and sentence levels, enabling a comprehensive capture of hierarchical structural features and complex multi-modal associations of long documents.

People's motivational processes, well-being, and performance are likely to be facilitated through the support of others. Self-determination theory argues that interpersonal supports for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are crucial to achieve these outcomes. In the present study, we provide a comprehensive examination of this formulation based on a meta-analytic database consisting of 4,561 effect sizes from 881 independent samples ( = 443,556).

Nurses' Work-Family Strategies during COVID-19 Lockdown and Their Association with Individual Health and Family Relations.

Healthcare (Basel)

November 2023

Department of Sociology, College of Philosophy, Law and Political Science, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai 200234, China.

The COVID-19 lockdown forced people to stay at home and address their family duties more equally. However, since nurses themselves were involved in the closed-loop management in hospitals and unable to return home, there was also an increased likelihood of non-traditional work-family strategies emerging. To ascertain the extant and implications of this phenomenon, this cross-sectional study explores work-family management strategies among nurses during the COVID-19 lockdown and their association with nurses' individual health, family relationships, and job performance.
