Prognostic significance and accuracy of oncologists' estimates of survival time in recurrent ovarian cancer.

Int J Gynecol Cancer

January 2025

The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, The University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia; Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre, Sydney, NSW, Australia; Western Sydney University, Department of Medicine, Sydney, NSW, Australia. Electronic address:

Objective: We evaluated the accuracy of oncologists' estimates of expected survival time in recurrent ovarian cancer.

Methods: Oncologists estimated expected survival time at baseline for each patient, who were then followed up for survival time. We hypothesized that oncologists' estimates of expected survival time would be independently significant predictors of survival, unbiased (approximately equal proportions [50%] living longer versus shorter than their expected survival time), or imprecise (<30% within 0.

In this paper, the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Task Force on Quality of Life (QoL) and Patient-Oriented Outcomes presents its position statements on health-related (HR) QoL assessment in epidermolysis bullosa (EB). The EADV TF on QoL and Patient-Oriented Outcomes recommends the use of the EB-specific instrument QOLEB in patients over the age of 10 years and, in addition to the QOLEB, the use of iscorEB-p in moderate-to-severe EB; the IntoDermQoL proxy instrument with its EB-specific module should be used in children aged under 5 years. The EB-specific instrument iscorEB-p, and the dermatology-specific instrument CDLQI may measure HRQoL in children with EB aged from 5 to 10 years.

This article presents a conceptual analysis of the contemporary understanding of NURSING in Australia and proposes strategies for decolonisation. Through historical reflection and the lens of cultural safety and critical race theory, it examines some conditions which make up this concept, including "Florence Nightingale-influenced practices," "intellectual practitioners," and "whiteness in nursing." This analysis aims to identify conditions which we take to be necessary for the folk concept of NURSING to be satisfied and which result in negative outcomes.

Blunt abdominal trauma frequently results in visceral injury to either solid or hollow organs; however, injury to the gallbladder is rare. This is most likely due to the anatomical position of the gallbladder, which is well-insulated posterior to the liver and rib cage. Gallbladder injuries can be in the form of avulsion, contusion, or laceration.

The morbidity and mortality of sepsis remain high. Clinicians lack effective markers to rapidly diagnose sepsis and identify the underlying pathogen infection particularly for patients with candidaemia or cases of culture-negative sepsis where culture-based diagnostics are inadequate. In our search for new lines of potential sepsis biomarkers, we here explore the impact of various classes of infectious agents on the serum -glycome in a septic shock cohort.

Gendered Experiences of Intravenous Iron Infusion Reactions: A Patient Perspective.

J Patient Exp

January 2025

Centre for disability Research and Policy, Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia.

Hypophosphatemia following iron infusion is thought to be a relatively rare complication of intravenous iron infusion, though research is beginning to demonstrate that it occurs more often than previously assumed. Still, healthcare professionals are often unaware of this potential complication. This, coupled with the medical bias women can receive in health settings-plus the over-representation of women receiving intravenous iron-means that symptoms of hypophosphatemia may be misinterpreted or worse, misdiagnosed.
