Background: Recently recognized by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease, Noma, an acute and destructive gangrenous disease affecting the gums and facial structures within the oral cavity, has a high mortality rate if untreated.

Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and impact of Noma among internally displaced populations in Northeastern Nigeria.

Design: A retrospective study.

Paramedics' experiences of barriers to, and enablers of, responding to suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases: a qualitative study.

Background: Paramedics' work, even pre-pandemic, can be confronting and dangerous. As pandemics add extra stressors, the study explored paramedics' lived experience of the barriers to, and enablers of, responding to suspected or confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.

Methods: This exploratory-descriptive qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to investigate Queensland metropolitan paramedics' experiences of responding to cases during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patient Perspectives of Center-Specific Reporting in Kidney Failure Care: An Australian Qualitative Study.

Introduction: Public reporting of quality of care indicators in healthcare is intended to inform consumer decision-making; however, people may be unaware that such information exists, or it may not capture their priorities. The aim of this study was to understand the views of people with kidney disease about public reporting of dialysis and transplant center outcomes.

Methods: This qualitative study involved 27 patients with lived experience of kidney disease in Australia who participated in 11 online focus groups between August and December 2022.

'On-Demand' snack service in a rehabilitation setting: Impact on satisfaction, intake, waste and costs.

Aim: To evaluate an 'On-Demand' snack service in a rehabilitation setting for satisfaction, intake, waste and cost.

Methods: In September 2021, a trial of an 'On-Demand' snack service was conducted on two general rehabilitation wards in a purpose-built rehabilitation hospital. A retrospective comparison of pre-implementation, 1-month and 8-month post-implementation audit data was used to evaluate staff and patient satisfaction, nutritional intake, waste and cost (labour and food).

2024 CSANZ Position Statement on Indications, Assessment and Monitoring of Structural and Valvular Heart Disease With Transthoracic Echocardiography in Adults.

Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the most widely available and utilised imaging modality for the screening, diagnosis, and serial monitoring of all abnormalities related to cardiac structure or function. The primary objectives of this document are to provide (1) a guiding framework for treating clinicians of the acceptable indications for the initial and serial TTE assessments of the commonly encountered cardiovascular conditions in adults, and (2) the minimum required standard for TTE examinations and reporting for imaging service providers. The main areas covered within this Position Statement pertain to the TTE assessment of the left and right ventricles, valvular heart diseases, pericardial diseases, aortic diseases, infective endocarditis, cardiac masses, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases associated with cancer treatments or cardio-oncology.

Linoleic acid (LA), an n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), is obtained from the maternal diet during pregnancy, and is essential for normal fetal growth and development. A maternal high-LA (HLA) diet alters maternal and offspring fatty acids, maternal leptin and male/female ratio at embryonic (E) day 20 (E20). We investigated the effects of an HLA diet on embryonic offspring renal branching morphogenesis, leptin signalling, megalin signalling and angiogenesis gene expression.

An Age-Progression Intervention for Smoking Cessation: A Pilot Study Investigating the Influence of Two Sets of Instructions on Intervention Efficacy.

Background: Research on age-progression facial morphing interventions for smoking cessation has not investigated the effect of different instructions for intervention delivery. The objective of this pilot study was to investigate the influence of two instruction types used to deliver the intervention on efficacy of the intervention.

Method: Women were recruited and randomly allocated to an age-progression intervention session with (i) neutral instructions; (ii) instructions designed to reassure; or (iii) a condition that controlled for participant engagement ("control").

Identifying priority sites for whale shark ship collision management globally.

The expansion of the world's merchant fleet poses a great threat to the ocean's biodiversity. Collisions between ships and marine megafauna can have population-level consequences for vulnerable species. The Endangered whale shark (Rhincodon typus) shares a circumglobal distribution with this expanding fleet and tracking of movement pathways has shown that large vessel collisions pose a major threat to the species.

Optimising Transitional Care Following a Heart Failure Hospitalisation in Australia.

Hospitalisations for heart failure (HF) are associated with high rates of readmission and death, the most vulnerable period being within the first few weeks post-hospital discharge. Effective transition of care from hospital to community settings for patients with HF can help reduce readmission and mortality over the vulnerable period, and improve long-term outcomes for patients, their family or carers, and the healthcare system. Planning and communication underpin a seamless transition of care, by ensuring that the changes to patients' management initiated in hospital continue to be implemented following discharge and in the long term.

Employing texture loss to denoise OCT images using generative adversarial networks.

OCT is a widely used clinical ophthalmic imaging technique, but the presence of speckle noise can obscure important pathological features and hinder accurate segmentation. This paper presents a novel method for denoising optical coherence tomography (OCT) images using a combination of texture loss and generative adversarial networks (GANs). Previous approaches have integrated deep learning techniques, starting with denoising Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) that employed pixel-wise losses.

Meta-analysis prediction intervals are under reported in sport and exercise medicine.

Aim: Prediction intervals are a useful measure of uncertainty for meta-analyses that capture the likely effect size of a new (similar) study based on the included studies. In comparison, confidence intervals reflect the uncertainty around the point estimate but provide an incomplete summary of the underlying heterogeneity in the meta-analysis. This study aimed to estimate (i) the proportion of meta-analysis studies that report a prediction interval in sports medicine; and (ii) the proportion of studies with a discrepancy between the reported confidence interval and a calculated prediction interval.

REducing Sleep Apnoea for the PrEvention of Dementia (REShAPED): Protocol for a multi-site feasibility randomised controlled trial.

There is accumulating evidence that has linked OSA with increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Here we present the protocol for an Australian, multi-site randomised controlled, parallel open-label trial which will evaluate the feasibility for a full-scale trial investigating the effects of treating OSA on cognitive decline in older adults at risk of dementia within memory clinic settings. We will randomise 180 older adults to either the treatment intervention group or control group for 2 years.

Characterisation of the normal human ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer using widefield optical coherence tomography.

Purpose: To describe variations in ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness in a healthy cohort from widefield optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans.

Methods: Widefield OCT scans spanning 55° × 45° were acquired from 470 healthy eyes. The GCIPL was automatically segmented using deep learning methods.

Impaired Lumbar Extensor Force Control Is Associated with Increased Lifting Knee Velocity in People with Chronic Low-Back Pain.

The ability of the lumbar extensor muscles to accurately control static and dynamic forces is important during daily activities such as lifting. Lumbar extensor force control is impaired in low-back pain patients and may therefore explain the variances in lifting kinematics. Thirty-three chronic low-back pain participants were instructed to lift weight using a self-selected technique.

Metabolic syndrome and surgical complications: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 million individuals.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterised by the presence of at least three of the five following components: insulin resistance, obesity, chronic hypertension, elevated serum triglycerides, and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. It is estimated to affect 1 in 3 people around the globe and is reported to affect 46% of surgical patients. For people with MetS who undergo surgery, an emerging body of literature points to significantly poorer postoperative outcomes compared with nonaffected populations.

The Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum is a unique spectrum of cognitive impairment that typically involves the stages of subjective memory complaints (SMC), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD dementia. Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), such as apathy, anxiety, stress, and depression, are highly common throughout the AD continuum. However, there is a dearth of research on how these NPS vary across the AD continuum, especially SMC.

Changes in retinal and choroidal optical coherence tomography angiography indices among young adults and children over 1 year.

Clinical Relevance: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) indices are likely to change across time and optometrists should be aware of the variability expected during childhood development and in healthy adults.

Background: Cross-sectional studies have shown that OCT-A indices are associated with age in adults and children. The aim of this study is to investigate longitudinal changes in retinal and choroidal OCT-A indices over 1 year among healthy children and young adults.

Impact of pay-for-performance for stroke unit access on mortality in Queensland, Australia: an interrupted time series analysis.

Background: Stroke unit care provides substantial benefits for all subgroups of patient with stroke, but consistent access has been difficult to achieve in many healthcare systems. Pay-for-performance incentives have been introduced widely in attempt to improve quality and efficiency in healthcare, but there is limited evidence of positive impact when they are targeted at hospitals. In 2012, a pay-for-performance program targeting stroke unit access was co-designed and implemented within a clinical quality improvement network across public hospitals in Queensland, Australia.

The impact of COVID-19 on Australian clinicians' decision making in line with the principles of Choosing Wisely.

Aim: To explore the perspectives of clinicians' decision-making processes and considerations in line with the Choosing Wisely principles during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design: An exploratory qualitative approach was used.

Methods: Data were collected via semi-structured interviews to encourage participants to discuss their own experience in making clinical decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Enhancing effective healthcare communication in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand: Considerations for research, teaching, policy, and practice.

Objective: In this article we present a conceptual framework for enhancing effective healthcare communication in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Methods: Through an iterative, deliberative dialogue approach, we, as experts from a variety of health professions and academic disciplines, worked together to identify core values and considerations for healthcare communication across numerous health professions and disciplines and within research, teaching, policy, and practice contexts.

Results: The framework developed includes five core values at its centre: equitable, inclusive, evidence-based, collaborative, reflective.
