Research is…making the emotional dimensions of academics' research visible.

Research is at the core of universities' raison d'être and is an integral aspect of academic work, yet the ever-changing parameters around research are problematic. While studies have examined changes brought about through research assessment exercises and issues of academic identity in the twenty-first century, fewer studies have used arts-related research methods to engage with academics' experiences of these changes. This article draws upon visual and textual material generated by academics at an Australian university to investigate how academic researchers engage with research in the current milieu.

Ovine red cell concentrates for transfusion research - is the storage lesion comparable to human red cell concentrates?

Background And Objectives: Sheep are increasingly being used as a large in vivo animal model of blood transfusion because they provide several advantages over small animals. Understanding the effects of storage duration on ovine (ov) red cell concentrates (RCCs) and how these changes compare with stored human (hu) RCCs is necessary to facilitate clinical translation of research findings.

Materials And Methods: OvRCCs (n = 5) collected and processed in standard human blood collection packs, and equivalent huRCCs provided by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (n = 5), were stored at 2-6°C for 42 days, with samples collected weekly.

Capturing Complex Vaccine-Immune-Disease Relationships for Free-Ranging Koalas: Higher Chlamydial Loads Are Associated With Less IL17 Expression and More Chlamydial Disease.

Chlamydial disease is a major factor negatively affecting koala populations. Vaccination is a promising management option that would result in immune-mediated protection against disease. Measuring and assessing vaccine efficacy can be challenging owing to both direct and indirect interactions caused by vaccination.

Efficacy and Safety of Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir/Voxilaprevir for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) NS5A-Inhibitor Experienced Patients With Difficult to Cure Characteristics.

Background: In clinical trials, hepatitis C virus (HCV) salvage treatment with sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir (SOF/VEL/VOX) achieved an SVR12 rate of >95% in NS5A-experienced participants. Lower SVR12 rates have been reported in real-world studies, particularly for genotype (GT)3 infection and cirrhosis. We determined the efficacy and safety of SOF/VEL/VOX in a large real-world cohort.

Theoretical asthma self-management program for Taiwanese adolescents with self-efficacy, outcome-expectancy, health behaviour, and asthma symptoms: A randomized controlled trial.

Background: The asthma prevalence of Taiwanese adolescents continued to rise. With physical and psychological changes in adolescents, managing asthma can be quite challenges and affect social, emotional and physical wellbeing. Adolescents with high self-efficacy levels are more likely to be involved in prevention and management activities.

Quantification of abnormal upper limb movement during walking in people with acquired brain injury.

Background: Abnormal upper limb movements frequently affect people with acquired brain injury (ABI) during walking. Three-dimensional motion analysis (3DMA) can quantify upper limb abnormality kinematically, with composite scores condensing multiple joint axes data into a single score.

Research Question: Are 3DMA-derived composite scores valid (known-groups and convergent validity), reliable and able to quantify speed-related changes in abnormal upper limb movement during walking?

Methods: This observational study compared 42 adults with ABI and abnormal upper limb movements during walking with 36 healthy controls (HC) at a matched walking speed intention.

Validation of Spatiotemporal and Kinematic Measures in Functional Exercises Using a Minimal Modeling Inertial Sensor Methodology.

This study proposes a minimal modeling magnetic, angular rate and gravity (MARG) methodology for assessing spatiotemporal and kinematic measures of functional fitness exercises. Thirteen healthy persons performed repetitions of the squat, box squat, sandbag pickup, shuffle-walk, and bear crawl. Sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle range of motion (ROM) and stride length, stride time, and stance time measures were compared for the MARG method and an optical motion capture (OMC) system.

COVID-19 in a complex obstetric patient with cystic fibrosis.

We report the first case of COVID-19 in a pregnant patient with cystic fibrosis. We describe the diagnosis, clinical course and management of the patient and their family with regards to clinical, social and infection control measures around delivery. This case highlights the importance of the cooperation of multidisciplinary teams to achieve good clinical outcomes in complex patients with COVID-19.

Understanding socio-cultural influences on food intake in relation to overweight and obesity in a rural indigenous community of Fiji Islands.

Issue Addressed: Obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are largely preventable by understanding the connection between socio-cultural knowledge, yet intervention effectiveness may hinder changes in lifestyles and behaviours in Indigenous health. This study performed to understand the social and cultural components, which contribute to obesity in rural areas of the Indigenous Fijian.

Methods: This study is a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project, which engaged community members from a rural iTaukei village in the Fiji Islands.

In this study we examine whether specific 'anxiety-maintaining' parenting behaviors (i.e., overinvolvement and/or negativity) exacerbate the effects of disaster-related prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) on school-age anxiety symptoms.

Upskilling Mental Health Nurses to Address the Burden of Poor Metabolic Health: A Mixed Method Evaluation.

People living with a severe mental illness experience a life expectancy gap compared to the rest of the population that is largely driven by preventable cardiovascular diseases stemming from lifestyle factors, and the side effects of psychotropic medications. Mental health nurses are well positioned to help address the gap using lifestyle interventions. However, many nurses don't prioritise delivering such care, or lack the skills and confidence to implement these strategies.

No evidence of a legacy effect on survival following randomization to extended hours dialysis in the ACTIVE Dialysis trial.

Aim: Extended hours haemodialysis is associated with superior survival to standard hours. However, residual confounding limits the interpretation of this observation. We aimed to determine the effect of a period of extended hours dialysis on long-term survival among participants in the ACTIVE Dialysis trial.

Disaster-related prenatal maternal stress, and childhood HPA-axis regulation and anxiety: The QF2011 Queensland Flood Study.

Background: The fetal programming hypothesis suggests that prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) influences aspects of fetal development, such as the Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis, enhancing susceptibility to emotional problems. No study (to our knowledge) has investigated this pathway considering development of preschool anxiety symptoms. Using data from the Queensland Flood study (QF2011), our objective was to determine whether toddler HPA-axis functioning mediated the association between aspects of flood-related PNMS and child anxiety symptoms at 4-years, and whether relationships were moderated by the timing of the stressor in utero or by the child's sex.

Above-ground biomass recovery following logging and thinning over 46 years in an Australian tropical forest.

Managed tropical forests are a globally important carbon pool, but the effects of logging and thinning intensities on long-term biomass dynamics are poorly known. We investigated the demographic mechanisms of above-ground biomass recovery over 48 years in an Australian tropical forest following four silvicultural treatments: selective logging only as a control and selective logging followed by low-, medium- and high-intensity thinning. Initial biomass recovery rates following thinning were poor predictors of the long-term changes.

Patients With Genetic Heart Disease and COVID-19: A Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) Consensus Statement.

In the context of the current global COVID-19 pandemic, this Consensus Statement provides current recommendations for patients with, or at risk of developing, genetic heart disease, and for their health care management and service provision in Australia and New Zealand. Apart from general recommendations, there are specific recommendations for the following conditions: cardiomyopathy, Brugada syndrome (including in children), long QT syndrome (LQTS) and catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT). Other recommendations are relevant to patient self-care and primary health care.

A qualitative meta-synthesis investigating the experiences of the patient's family when treatment is withdrawn in the intensive care unit.

Aim: To synthesize qualitative studies of patients' families' experiences and perceptions of end-of-life care in the intensive care unit when life-sustaining treatments are withdrawn.

Design: Qualitative meta-synthesis.

Data Sources: Comprehensive search of 18 electronic databases for qualitative studies published between January 2005 - February 2019.

Analysis of Genetic Diversity of Human Hepatitis B Virus in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The extent of whole genome diversity amongst hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes is not well described. This study aimed to update the current distribution of HBV types and to investigate mutation rates and nucleotide diversity between genotypes in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. We retrieved 930 human HBV complete genomes from these regions from the NCBI nucleotide database for genotyping, detection of potential recombination, serotype prediction, mutation identification and comparative genome analyses.

Psychological distress is highly prevalent in inflammatory bowel disease: A survey of psychological needs and attitudes.

Background And Aim: Data on patient needs and access to psychological services in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are scarce. This study aimed to describe the levels of distress and the needs, attitudes, and access to psychological services for people within Australia against established Australian IBD Standards.

Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted with Australians ≥16 years old recruited via Crohn's & Colitis Australia membership, public and private clinics, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Bayesian hierarchical modelling of basketball tracking data - a case study of spatial entropy and spatial effectiveness.

Spatio-temporal data in sport is increasing rapidly, however suitable statistical methods for analysing this data are underdeveloped. The current study establishes the need for spatial statistical methods, propose a Bayesian hierarchical model as an appropriate method for comparing spatial variables, and test this model across three spatial scales. The need for spatial statistical methods was established through the identification of spatial autocorrelation.

Encouraging young adults with a disability to be independent in their journey to work: A segmentation and application of Theory of Planned Behaviour approach.

This study investigates how young adults with disabilities can be encouraged to be independent in their travel to work and thus, transition more smoothly into the workforce. Using cluster analysis, we identify three segment groups of young adults with physical disabilities. The Theory of Planned Behaviour is then applied to examine differences and identify strategies that could provide assistance and support to these groups of workers in their travel to work.

Development of an Anthropometric Prediction Model for Fat-Free Mass and Muscle Mass in Elite Athletes.

The monitoring of body composition is common in sports given the association with performance. Surface anthropometry is often preferred when monitoring changes for its convenience, practicality, and portability. However, anthropometry does not provide valid estimates of absolute lean tissue in elite athletes.

Bleeding Management Practices of Australian Cardiac Surgeons, Anesthesiologists and Perfusionists: A Cross-Sectional National Survey Incorporating the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and COM-B Model.

Purpose: Excessive bleeding is an acknowledged consequence of cardiac surgery, occurring in up to 10% of adult patients. This clinically important complication leads to poorer patient outcomes. Clinical practice guidelines are available to support best practice however variability in bleeding management practice and related adverse outcomes still exist.

Climate Change and Infectious Diseases: Evidence from Highly Vulnerable Countries.

Background: Climate change is an alarming challenge for humanity at large due to its mediating role in emergence and spread of infectious diseases like cholera and malaria. This study was conducted to examine the effect of climate change and some socio-economic factors on incidence of infectious diseases.

Methods: We used country level panel data over the 1990-2017 period using panel ARDL-PMG technique on highly affected countries from climate change.
