Runway surface friction is critically important to safe aircraft operations and mostly depends on the surface texture, which provides grip in the presence of contamination and directly affects the friction coefficient in general. Microtexture assessment is the most challenging part of texture assessment since there is no standardised pavement microtexture control method in runway maintenance and management practice. The purpose of this study was to develop a simple laser profilometer and analysis model and subsequent validation for use in runway friction surveys.

Background: Paper-based patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient education can assist in improving outcomes but is administratively burdensome. Mobile phone applications ('apps') can distribute extensive information and PROMs at relevant time points. This study aimed to assess the suitability of an app to guide postoperative management and record PROMs based on satisfaction and compliance.

Emergency service personnel perform roles associated with high levels of trauma exposure and stress, and not surprisingly experience greater risk for poor mental health including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and substance use relative to the general population. Although programs exist to minimise the risk of developing mental health problems, their efficacy to date has been limited or untested. We will test the efficacy of the three programs which form PEREI: Protecting Emergency Responders with Evidence-Based Interventions.

Purpose: Understanding important features for performance in non-disabled bench press and Paralympic powerlifting may inform talent identification and transfer models. The aim of this scoping review was to describe features associated with bench press performance.

Methods: We conducted a systematic search of three electronic databases (PubMed, SportDiscus and EMBASE) to identify studies involving non-disabled and Para athlete populations that investigated features related to bench press one-repetition maximum (1RM), across six domains (anthropometric, body composition, demographic, technical, disability and neuromuscular).

Article Synopsis
  • Despite the proven benefits of sensory approaches, little research has focused on improving their implementation in acute mental health units.
  • A study utilized an 11-month co-designed strategy to enhance the use of sensory methods and reduce restraint/seclusion in a mental health ward, guided by the Integrated Knowledge Translation (IKT) and the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW).
  • Results indicated significant increases in staff knowledge and confidence regarding sensory approaches, as well as the actual use of sensory tools, with recommendations for ongoing training and support to maintain these practices.

Purpose: Understanding how early adaptive schemas, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulation influence eating disorder (ED) symptoms, and whether this differs across diagnostic subtypes is critical to optimising treatment. The current study investigated the relationship between these variables and ED symptomology in individuals self-reporting an ED diagnosis and healthy controls.

Methods: A dataset of 1576 online survey responses yielded subsamples for anorexia nervosa (n = 155), bulimia nervosa (n = 55), binge eating disorder (n = 33), other specified feeding or eating disorder (n = 93), and healthy participants (n = 505).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate longitudinal changes in choroidal vascular characteristics in childhood, and their relationship with eye growth and refractive error.

Methods: Analysis of high-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, collected over an 18-month period as part of the Role of Outdoor Activity in Myopia (ROAM) study, was conducted in 101 children (41 myopic, 60 non-myopic, age 10-15 years). OCT images were automatically analyzed and binarized using a deep learning software tool.

The central and peripheral corneal response to short-term hypoxia.

Ophthalmic Physiol Opt

November 2024

Contact Lens and Visual Optics Laboratory, Optometry and Vision Science, Centre for Vision and Eye Research, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Purpose: To quantify the magnitude and recovery of central and limbal corneal oedema induced by short-term unilateral eyelid closure without contact lens wear.

Methods: The left eye of 10 adults with healthy corneas was patched using a folded eye pad for 30 min. High-resolution optical coherence tomography images (which captured the limbal and central corneal regions simultaneously) were obtained before patching, immediately after eye opening and again at 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 14 and 15 mins after eyelid opening.

Purpose: Few studies have explored choroidal changes after cessation of myopia control. This study evaluated the choroidal thickness (ChT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) during and after discontinuing long-term low-concentration atropine eye drops use for myopia control.

Methods: Children with progressive myopia (6-16 years; n = 153) were randomized to receive 0.

Background: Determine the effects of a multifactorial lifestyle intervention on physical activity (PA), BMI and health-related quality of life (QoL) in obese and overweight adolescents.

Methods: Nine schools in India were clustered randomly in a 12-month study with students allocated to a multifactorial intervention (MFI), or exercise only (EX) or control (CON) group. Participants were adolescents aged 11-16 years (n=671).

Linoleic acid (LA) is required for neuronal development. We have previously demonstrated sex-specific changes in cardiovascular and hepatic function in rat offspring from mothers consuming a high-LA diet, with some effects associated with reduced LA concentration in the postnatal diet. At this time, the impact of a high-maternal-LA diet on offspring brain development and the potential for the postnatal diet to alter any adverse changes are unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) measurements from widefield optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans and clinical visual field (VF) data across different eye conditions.
  • It involved analyzing OCT scans from healthy individuals, glaucoma suspects, and glaucoma patients to determine how GCIPL thickness correlates with visual field thresholds, using statistical models to assess diagnostic accuracy.
  • Results show significant variability in visual field data at defective locations and suggest that using GCIPL parameters could improve the prediction of VF status, potentially aiding in clinical decision-making for eye care.

In Colombia, the long-lasting internal conflict heavily shaped the socio-ecological context and imposed relationships that persisted after the peace agreement was signed in 2016. One question of interest is whether policies or interventions conceived to attain desirable goals for the post-conflict society may be effective or, rather, if the constraints imposed by the conflict scenario might produce unintended effects, either on the environmental or the social side. To explore this issue, we envisaged the socio-ecological system as a parsimonious set of characteristic ecological and social variables within the conflict-related framework and reconstructed their interactions, exploiting elicitation-based information and the literature.

Falls commonly occur in hospitals, particularly among older adults. Fractures in the older population can cause major morbidity, which can result in long hospital admissions and increased care costs. This study aimed to characterise the demographics of patients aged 65 years and over who fell in hospital and to determine the type of fractures they sustained.

Emancipatory practice development (ePD) is a practitioner-led research methodology which enables workplace transformation. Underpinned by the critical paradigm, ePD works through facilitation and workplace learning, with people in their local context on practice issues that are significant to them. Its purpose is to embed safe, person-centred learning cultures which transform individuals and workplaces.

Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the most widely available and utilised imaging modality for the screening, diagnosis, and serial monitoring of all abnormalities related to cardiac structure or function. The primary objectives of this document are to provide (1) a guiding framework for treating clinicians of the acceptable indications for the initial and serial TTE assessments of the commonly encountered cardiovascular conditions in adults, and (2) the minimum required standard for TTE examinations and reporting for imaging service providers. The main areas covered within this Position Statement pertain to the TTE assessment of the left and right ventricles, valvular heart diseases, pericardial diseases, aortic diseases, infective endocarditis, cardiac masses, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases associated with cancer treatments or cardio-oncology.
