The effects of the addition of a nitric oxide (NO) donor to the cardioplegic solution on reperfusion injury and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are not known. Therefore, this work was conducted to determine the possible effects of nitroglycerin on LPO and reperfusion injury as a result of CABG. A prospective double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 30 consecutive patients with coronary artery disease who underwent CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Fixed or removable orthodontic appliances impede the maintenance of oral hygiene and result in plaque accumulation. Plaque retention surrounding orthodontic appliances leads to enamel demineralization caused by organic acids produced by bacteria in the dental plaque. Many studies have evaluated the effects of fixed orthodontic appliances on microbial flora and periodontal status, but only a few have evaluated the method of ligation as an additional factor.

Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory multisystem disorder characterized by recurrent oral and genital aphthous ulcers, arthritis, uveitis, and thrombophlebitis; it can involve several organs. However, recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) can be seen without a confirmed diagnosis of BD. Moreover, there is no way of predicting whether a patient with RAS will develop BD.

Mandibular anterior crowding is identified as the discrepancy between mesiodistal tooth widths of four permanent incisors and available space in the alveolar process. However, incisor crowding is not merely a tooth-arch size discrepancy. Many variables such as direction of mandibular growth, early loss of deciduous molars, the oral and perioral musculature and incisor and molar inclination can be associated with crowding.

Factors contributing to mandibular anterior crowding in the early mixed dentition.

Angle Orthod

December 2004

Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Suleyman Demirel, Cunur, Isparta, Turkey.

The aim of this study was to uncover the possible factors contributing to mandibular anterior crowding in the early mixed dentition. Mandibular dental casts of 60 children in the early mixed dentition were divided into two groups according to the severity of mandibular anterior crowding. The space available for the mandibular permanent incisors, total incisor width, deciduous intercanine width, deciduous intermolar widths, permanent intermolar width, interalveolar width, and total arch length were compared between the crowded group (CG) and noncrowded group (NCG), and correlations with crowding were investigated.

Single or multiple small subarachnoid hemorrhages by puncturing a small branch of the rat basilar artery causes chronic cerebral vasospasm.

Neurosurgery

February 2005

Department of Neurosurgery, University of Süleyman Demirel, Isparta, Turkey, and Department of Neurological Surgery, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin.

Objective: This study looked at the effects of single and multiple small subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) caused by puncturing a small branch of the basilar artery in rats.

Methods: Rats were subjected to single SAH (n = 21), multiple SAH (n = 21), sham operation (n = 21), or no procedures (control group, n = 7). SAH was induced in rats by transclival puncture of a small branch of the basilar artery.

November 2004

Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Suleyman Demirel, Isparta, Turkey.

Background: The role of oxidative stress has not been fully understood in the aetiopathogenesis of vitiligo in different studies.

Aim: We aimed to investigate the role of the oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.

Methods: In this study, we examined levels of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide in tissue of 25 patients with generalized vitiligo and 25 healthy controls.

We examined the effect of subacute methidathion (MD) administration on vascular wall damage and evaluated the ameliorating effects of combination of vitamins E and C against MD toxicity. The experimental groups were: rats treated with corn oil (control group), rats treated with 5 mg/kg MD (MD), and rats treated with 5 mg/kg body weight MD plus vitamin E and vitamin C (MD+Vit). The groups were given MD by gavage on 5 days a week for 4 weeks at a daily dose 5 mg/kg (MD and MD+Vit) using corn oil as the vehicle.

Role of endogenous adenosine in atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft.

Clin Cardiol

June 2004

University of Suleyman Demirel, School of Medicine, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Isparta, Turkey.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common complication following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). The mechanism of AF after CABG is not well defined; however, it is suggested that endogenous adenosine, released in response to tissue hypoxia, may play a mechanistic role in these arrhythmias.

Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to examine whether intravenous theophylline, via adenosine A1 receptor antagonism, would correct or modify new-onset early (<48 h post CABG) atrial fibrillation in patients post CABG, and thereby implicate endogenous adenosine as an inciting agent.

Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Although its pathogenesis is not fully understood, recent studies have suggested that immunological abnormalities and neutrophil hyperfunction may be involved in its etiology and pathophysiology. The immune system in BD can be characterized as a divergent cytokine production profile of the mixed Th1/Th2 cell type.
