Florid cementoosseous dysplasia: a rare case report.

Case Rep Dent

October 2013

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Süleyman Demirel, East Campus, 32260 Çünür Isparta, Turkey.

Florid cementoosseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a rare, benign, fibroosseous, and multifocal dysplastic lesion of the jaw that consists of cellular fibrous connective tissue with bone and cementum-like tissue. FCOD is most commonly found in middle-aged black women, is generally asymptomatic, and is usually detected during radiological examination. FCOD associated with multiple impacted teeth and bone expansion is a very rare phenomenon, and there are only a few familial cases reported in the literature.

It is well known that Ca(2+) influx through cation channels induces peripheral pain in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Melastatin-like transient receptor potential 2 (TRPM2) channel is a oxidative redox sensitive Ca(2+)-permeable cation channel. There is scarce report on block of the channels.

Glutathione (GSH) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) are thiol-containing antioxidants, and also act through a direct reaction with free radicals. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is the principal transduction channel serving as a polymodal detector. Despite the importance of oxidative stress in pain sensitivity, its role in TRPV1 modulation is poorly understood.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a thiol-containing (sulphydryl donor) antioxidant, which contributes to regeneration of glutathione (GSH) and also acts through a direct reaction with free radicals. Thiol depletion has been implicated in the neurobiology of sensory neurons and pain. We reported recently an activator role of intracellular GSH depletion on calcium influx through transient receptor potential melastatin-like 2 (TRPM2) channels in rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG).

Transient receptor potential ion channel melastatin subtype 8 (TRPM8) is activated by cold temperature and cooling agents, such as menthol and icilin. Compounds containing peppermint are reported to reduce symptoms of environmental cold stress such as cold allodynia in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neuron; however, the underlying mechanisms of action are unclear. We tested the effects of physiological heat (37°C), anthralic acid (ACA and 0.

Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant thiol antioxidant in mammalian cells and maintains thiol redox in the cells. GSH depletion has been implicated in the neurobiology of sensory neurons. Because the mechanisms that lead to melastatin-like transient receptor potential 2 (TRPM2) channel activation/inhibition in response to glutathione depletion and 2-aminoethyldiphenyl borinate (2-APB) administration are not understood, we tested the effects of 2-APB and GSH on oxidative stress and buthionine sulfoximine (BSO)-induced TRPM2 cation channel currents in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of rats.

Exposure to oxidative stress causes health problems, including sensory neuron neuropathy and pain. Rotenone is a toxin used to generate intracellular oxidative stress in neurons. However, the mechanism of toxicity in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons has not been characterized.

In this study, we assessed the effects of chronic defoliation on radial, height and volume growth of Crimean pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) trees of the pine processionary moth [Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni Tams (Lepidoptera:Thaumetopoeidae)] in western Turkey Crimean pine tree ring chronologies were analyzed for evidence of the pine processionary moth (PPM). Tree ring widths from non-defoliated Crimean pine sample trees, which were not defoliated by PPM from 1998 to 2004, were used to estimate potential growth in the defoliated Crimean pine sample trees during the same time interval. In 2004, increment cores collected from 50 defoliated sample trees and 25 non-defoliated sample trees dominant or co-dominant trees.

Pre-growth mortality of Abies cilicica trees and mortality models performance.

J Environ Biol

May 2010

Department of Forest Management, Faculty of Forestry, University of Süleyman Demirel, 32260 Cunur, Isparta, Turkey.

In this study, we compared tree-growth rates (basal area increment) from recently dead and living Taurus fir (Abies cilicica Carr.) trees in the Kovada lake Forest of Isparta, Turkey. For each dead tree, tree-growth rates were analyzed for the presence of pre-death growth depressions in the study area (number of sample plots = 11) in 2006.

Use of Ankaferd Blood Stopper as a hemostatic agent: a clinical experience.

J Contemp Dent Pract

January 2010

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry, University of Suleyman Demirel, Isparta, Turkey.

Aim: To determine the efficacy of the topical application of Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) on hemorrhagic diathesis following dental procedures under different conditions.

Background: Some patients have a tendency to bleed excessively after dental surgery for a variety of reasons, making oral surgical procedures more risky for these patients. Since hemorrhage can cause major morbidity and mortality, the identification of a novel, effective hemostatic agent could improve the management of excessive bleeding that occurs during dental procedures.

The aims of this study were to test whether the shear bond strengths (SBS) of three commercially available colour change adhesives (CCAs), Transbond Plus Color Change Adhesive, Grēngloo, and Blūgloo, are different and to compare their bond strengths with a traditional light cure adhesive, Light Bond. Forty-eight human permanent premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons and without any caries or visible defects were used in this study. The brackets were bonded with Light Bond (group I), Grēngloo (group II), Blūgloo (group III), and Transbond Plus CCA (group IV).

Purpose: A prospective study was planned to determine the relationship between post swim-up acrosome index (AI) evaluation and fertilization outcomes in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) program.

Materials And Methods: Infertile couples who have applied to IVF were admitted into this study when the male partner's sperm concentration was > 20 x 10(6)/mL and motility > 30%. Pre- and post swim-up semen quality parameters including concentration, motility, sperm morphology and AI were evaluated in a prospective, randomized and blinded fashion.

Aim: To investigate the effects of gallbladder stones on motor functions of the gallbladder and the dynamics of bile flow in asymptomatic gallstone disease.

Methods: Quantitative hepatobiliary scintigraphy was performed to detect the parameters of gallbladder motor function [gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF), gallbladder visualization time (GBVT), gallbladder time to peak activity (GBT(max)), gallbladder half emptying time (GBT(1/2)), and transit time of bile to duodenum (TTBD)] in 24 patients with asymptomatic cholelithiasis who were diagnosed incidentally during routine abdominal ultrasonographic examination and 20 healthy subjects with normal gallbladder.

Results: Even though there was no significant difference in the clinical and laboratory parameters between the patient and control groups, all parameters of gallbladder function except TTBD were found to differ significantly between the two groups.

The aims of this in vitro study were to evaluate the effect of enamel fluorosis on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets and to determine whether adhesion promoter, Enhance LC, increases the bond strength of brackets to fluorosed enamel. Forty-five (30 fluorosed and 15 non-fluorosed) non-carious fresh human premolar teeth, extracted for orthodontic reasons and without any caries or visible defects, were used in this study. The fluorosed teeth were selected according to the modified Thylstrup and Fejerskov index, which is based on the clinical changes in fluorosed teeth.
