Tear levels of apoptotic, matrix-degrading and antioxidant biomarkers in patients with and without keratoconus: A cross sectional study.

Cont Lens Anterior Eye

October 2024

Vision Engineering Italy Srl, Via Livenza 3, 00198 Rome, Italy; Studio Italiano di Oftalmologia, Via Livenza 3, 00198 Rome, Italy.

Purpose: To assess the tear levels of a set of apoptotic, matrix-degrading and antioxidant biomarkers, including Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9), High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) and Superoxide Dismutase 3-Extracellular (SOD3).

Methods: Sandwich-ELISA commercial kits were used to test the expression of the three tear biomarkers in the lacrimal fluid of eligible participants. Linear logistic regression analysis was performed todetermine whether the set of tear biomarkers could be associated with clinically manifest keratoconus.

  • The study focuses on improving glioma surgery outcomes by utilizing diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to analyze the brain's white matter near tumors, specifically in the adjacent tumor area (BAT).
  • It involves an observational study of 118 glioma patients, measuring DTI parameters like Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusivity (MD), and Tract Irregularity (TI), to assess their relationship with tumor grades and surgical outcomes.
  • Results indicate a significant inverse relationship between FA and tumor grading, along with direct relationships for MD and TI values, highlighting their potential as predictive tools for safe tumor resection.

Patterns of psychiatric admissions across two major health crises: L' Aquila earthquake and COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

BMC Psychiatry

October 2024

Department of Biotechnological and Applied Clinical Sciences (DISCAB), University of L' Aquila, Via Vetoio, (Coppito 2), L' Aquila, 67100, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed psychiatric hospitalization trends at San Salvatore Hospital during two significant crises: the 2009 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, comparing data from two periods (2008-2011 and 2019-2022).
  • Researchers looked at weekly admissions for various mental health disorders, using statistical models to assess the impact of these events on hospitalization rates.
  • Findings revealed a notable decrease in hospitalizations immediately following the earthquake, with lower rates persisting for several months, while the COVID-19 lockdown initially saw stable admission rates, followed by a substantial long-term increase in hospitalizations in early 2022 across all diagnosed categories.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the recurrence rate of para-aortic lymph nodes in patients with early-stage cervical cancer who did not have surgical staging for these nodes while undergoing radical surgery.
  • A total of 432 patients were included, with a focus on various stages of cervical cancer and the follow-up revealed that only 0.5% of patients experienced recurrence in the para-aortic lymph nodes.
  • The overall 5-year recurrence-free survival rate for the cohort was found to be 90%, suggesting that para-aortic lymphadenectomy may not be necessary in all early-stage cases.

Interspecific interactions among species of the same guild play a critical role in shaping their realized niches, and their understanding may disclose mechanisms of coexistence. Investigating interactions among apex predators is of ecological and management interest, especially in human-dominated landscapes where type and intensity of their interspecific competition may be affected by human interference. During 2005-2010, we investigated, by means of GPS-telemetry, interactions between brown bears ( = 19) and wolves ( = 7) in a long-established national park in the central Apennines, Italy, where bears and wolves have always coexisted close to humans.

Background: Health literacy plays an important role in public health. Although this has been demonstrated in the field of ophthalmology, there are very few specific instruments available to assess eye health literacy. This work aims to develop an Italian questionnaire on knowledge of eye diseases (Knowledge on Eye Disease, Italian version; KED-IT) and to evaluate its reliability and reproducibility.

  • Facial synkinesis (FS) is a problem where facial muscles move involuntarily when someone tries to make a facial expression, often happening after facial palsy (FP).
  • The study tested whether combining physical therapy for the face with eyelid surgery helps people recover better and avoid FS compared to just using physical therapy alone.
  • Results showed that patients who had both treatments recovered faster and didn't develop FS, while some patients who only had physical therapy developed FS.

Understanding excess mortality in 2022: The dual impact of COVID-19 and heatwaves on the Italian elderly population.

Health Place

November 2024

Department of Environment and Health, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Viale Regina Elena, 299, Rome, 00161, Italy.

In this study, we employ a comprehensive approach to model the concurrent effects of the COVID-19 epidemic and heatwaves on all-cause excess mortality. Our investigation uncovers distinct peaks in excess mortality, notably among individuals aged 80 years and older, revealing a strong positive correlation with excess temperatures (ET) during the summer of 2022 in Italy. Furthermore, we identify a notable role played by COVID-19 hospitalizations, exhibiting regional disparities, particularly during the winter months.

Relatively few studies have longitudinally investigated how COVID-19 has disrupted the lives and health of youth beyond the first year of the pandemic. This may be because longitudinal researchers face complex challenges in figuring out how to code time, account for changes in COVID-19 spread, and model longitudinal COVID-19-related trajectories across environmental contexts. This manuscript considers each of these three methodological issues by modeling trajectories of COVID-19 disruption in 1080 youth from 12 cultural groups in nine nations between March 2020-July 2022 using multilevel modeling.

Objectives: The present research investigated the role of a pervasive and often negative form of indirect contact, exposure to mass media news on interethnic contact. Specifically, we examined the associations between mass media exposure and both African immigrants' attitudes toward native Italians and their collective action intentions to achieve higher intergroup equality in the host country.

Method: We conducted two survey studies, one cross-sectional (Study 1, = 285) and the second longitudinal (Study 2, = 423) with African immigrants living in Italy.

October 2024

Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Corporate Member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Department of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Immunology and Critical Care Medicine, Augustenburger Platz 1, 13353 Berlin, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (SAR) is a common problem for many people, especially in Western countries, and researchers studied its connection to different types of pollen and non-pollen allergens.
  • The study looked at the IgE antibodies in patients' blood to see how these antibodies reacted to both grass pollen and a specific dust mite allergen.
  • The results showed that having more IgE responses to dust mite proteins was linked to having higher overall IgE levels for pollens, but lower levels for the dust mite allergen itself.
