The mutation was generated in a Flp/FRT EMS screen for conditional mutations that cause growth and developmental defects in a genetic background that blocks apoptosis. The mutations were conditional, based on the allele being present on the starting chromosome, and blocking canonical apoptosis in a homozygous state. The mosaic eyes exhibit defects in eye development including patches of rough eye and irregular surface structure.

Objective: Deciduous dental crowns primarily develop during gestation and early infancy and embody early life stress exposures. Composite measures of dental fluctuating asymmetry (DFA) generated from the deciduous teeth may therefore indicate cumulative gestational stress in developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) studies. This study examines whether higher composite measures of deciduous DFA are associated with low birthweight and prematurity, two aspects of birth phenotype consistently associated with increased morbidity and mortality risks in adulthood.

Objectives: External environmental heat exposure during gestation impacts the physiology of human development in utero, but evidence for these impacts has not yet been explored in dentition. We examined deciduous teeth for fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a measure of developmental instability, together with gestational environmental temperature data drawn from historical weather statistics.

Materials And Methods: We measured dental casts from the longitudinal Burlington Growth Study, representing 172 participants (ages 3-6 years) with health records.

Many institutions worldwide honor the gift of human body donors through memorial services, ceremonies, and various other means, such as guided reflection or art activities. Memorial services can vary when it comes to the name, who is involved in the planning, and who may attend. Within the United States, the role of religion in the planning and delivery of these ceremonies at religious institutions has yet to be actively explored.

Dissection of human body donors is a common component of anatomy curricula, as it provides opportunities for tactile and intellectual engagement unmatched otherwise. Additionally, interaction with human body donors contributes to the "hidden curriculum" of allowing students to begin to ethically practice patient care with empathy, respect, and compassion. With this, there have been various proposed guidelines for the ethical treatment of human body donors, with most focusing on student reflections and a final ceremony for honoring the donors, but there are numerous other ways throughout the course to incorporate ethical values and to guide students to consider the humanity of the donor.

Damage of the central nervous system (CNS), manifested by cognitive impairment, occurs in 80% of women with breast cancer (BC) as a complication of surgical treatment and radiochemotherapy. In this study, the levels of ICAM-1, PECAM-1, NSE, and anti-NR-2 antibodies which are associated with the damage of the CNS and the endothelium were measured in the blood by ELISA as potential biomarkers that might reflect pathogenetic mechanisms in these patients. A total of 102 patients enrolled in this single-center trial were divided into four groups: (1) 26 patients after breast cancer treatment, (2) 21 patients with chronic brain ischemia (CBI) and asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ICA stenosis) (CBI + ICA stenosis), (3) 35 patients with CBI but without asymptomatic carotid stenosis, and (4) 20 healthy female volunteers (control group).

Variant innervation of the mylohyoid muscle by the lingual nerve.

Folia Morphol (Warsz)

December 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Tulane Centre for Clinical Neurosciences, Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA, United States.

The nerve to mylohyoid muscle supplies the mylohyoid and the anterior belly of the digastric muscles, with terminal sensory branches that might innervate the submental skin and mandibular teeth. The nerve to mylohyoid muscle typically originates from the posterior surface of the inferior alveolar nerve right before entering the mandibular foramen. In rare cases, the nerve to mylohyoid muscle arises from the lingual nerve.

Most sexual assault victims make the conscious decision to report to the police. Concerns about the police appear to be prominent in victims' decision-making, but we do not know specifically what these concerns entail, and therefore cannot address them. A qualitative inquiry is needed to understand perceptions of the police in reporting decisions, from the voices of victims themselves.

Myrmecochory, a type of ant-mediated seed dispersal, is a diffuse, widespread mutualism in which both partners are purported to benefit from the services or rewards of the other. However, ant benefits in this interaction are conflicted and understudied, especially in the context of microbial third parties. Here, we investigate the effect of a myrmecochore plant-produced antimicrobial chemical (sanguinarine) on the growth of a common entomopathogenic fungus ().

Tranexamic acid and traumatic brain injuries.

JAAPA

December 2020

At the time this article was written, Katarina Sanford was a student in the PA program at the University of St. Francis in Albuquerque, N.M. Sarah Garcia is pharmacotherapeutics course director at the University of St. Francis. The authors have disclosed no potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise.

The CRASH-3 trial examined the use of tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients with intracranial bleeding secondary to traumatic brain injury. The trial demonstrated that TXA, an antifibrinolytic medication, reduces mortality in patients with mild to moderate head injuries. However, because of the trial's multiple limitations, TXA cannot yet be called the gold standard.

Myrmecochory is a widespread mutualism in which plants benefit from seed dispersal services by ants. Ants might also be providing seeds with an additional byproduct benefit via reduced plant pathogen loads in the ant nest environment through their antimicrobial glandular secretions. We investigate this byproduct benefit by identifying fungal communities in ant nests and surrounding environments and quantifying fungal community change (1) through time, (2) between different nest substrates, and (3) as a function of average ant activity levels within nests (based on observed ant activity at nest entrances throughout the summer).

Nursing colonialism in America: Implications for nursing leadership.

J Prof Nurs

March 2019

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, University of St. Francis, Joliet, IL, United States.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the nurse leader's role in understanding the impact of American colonialism - specifically racism, a product of colonialism - as a key determinant in shaping the education of nursing students and its influence on practicing nurses. American values have been grounded in its colonialism and continue to be influential in shaping beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and policies within the United States. Like racism, American colonialism depends on its perceived death for its survival - this is its paradox.

Psychological researchers have traditionally focused on lab-based experiments to test their theories and hypotheses. Although the lab provides excellent facilities for controlled testing, some questions are best explored by collecting information that is difficult to obtain in the lab. The vast amounts of data now available to researchers can be a valuable resource in this respect.
