Aim: Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) is a highly glycosylated protein in human plasma and one of the most abundant acute phase proteins in humans. Glycosylation plays a crucial role in its biological functions, and alterations in AGP N-glycome have been associated with various diseases and inflammatory conditions. However, large-scale studies of AGP N-glycosylation in the general population are lacking.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Cardiovascular Healthcare in Croatia: A Comprehensive Nationwide Survey.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular healthcare in Croatia remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to compare the utilization and provision of cardiovascular services during the pre-pandemic (2017-2019) and pandemic (2020-2021) periods, leveraging nationwide data from the Croatian Health Insurance Fund, which covers 95% of all insurance claims in the country. Our findings reveal that while the use of coronary angiographies decreased during the pandemic, there was a notable increase in the utilization of advanced heart failure treatment modalities and percutaneous coronary interventions, particularly in the context of acute myocardial infarction.

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) - in search of ideal diagnostic criteria and precise treatment.

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a spectrum of clinically heterogenous forms of monogenic diabetes mellitus characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance, onset at a young age, and absence of pancreatic islets autoimmunity. This rare form of hyperglycemia, with clinical features overlapping with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, has 14 subtypes with differences in prevalence and complications occurrence which tailor therapeutic approach. MODY phenotypes differ based on the gene involved, gene penetrance and expressivity.

Spinal and cervical nodal metastases in a patient with glioblastoma.

This article presents the rare case of a 54-year-old gentleman with primary glioblastoma developing multiple extracranial metastases 7 months after diagnosis. Initially, the patient complained of progressive headaches, confusion, and weakness of the left arm. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a right temporoparietal tumor with substantial surrounding subcortical edema and midline shift to the left.

Conclusiveness, readability and textual characteristics of plain language summaries from medical and non-medical organizations: a cross-sectional study.

This cross-sectional study compared plain language summaries (PLSs) from medical and non-medical organizations regarding conclusiveness, readability and textual characteristics. All Cochrane (medical PLSs, n = 8638) and Campbell Collaboration and International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (non-medical PLSs, n = 163) PLSs of latest versions of systematic reviews published until 10 November 2022 were analysed. PLSs were classified into three conclusiveness categories (conclusive, inconclusive and unclear) using a machine learning tool for medical PLSs and by two experts for non-medical PLSs.

Clinical significance of signal shadowing during intraoperative optical coherence tomography-assisted vitreoretinal surgery.

This study aimed to analyze the clinical significance of signal shadowing during intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT)-assisted vitreoretinal surgery caused by vitreoretinal instruments, tissue dyes, and vitreous substitutes, and to objectively quantify its impact on iOCT imaging. This is a retrospective observational study of postoperative image analysis from one hundred seventeen (117) patients who underwent iOCT-assisted vitrectomy. The image data were divided into three groups: vitreoretinal instruments, tissue dyes, and vitreous substitutes.

Introducing the model of repeated exposure of skin to antiseptics: Randomised pilot trial.

Introduction: Intensified hand hygiene measures were recommended for preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2. However, these measures can lead to skin damage and the development of hand eczema, particularly among health professionals.

Objectives: This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effects of repeated antiseptic use on healthy skin under controlled conditions and to assess the emollient use.

Structural Complications Following ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: An Analysis of the National Inpatient Sample 2016 to 2020.

ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a life-threatening emergency that can result in cardiac structural complications without timely revascularization. A retrospective study from the National Inpatient Sample included all patients with a diagnosis of STEMI between 2016 and 2020. Primary outcomes of interest were in-hospital mortality, length of stay (LoS), and healthcare costs for patients with and without structural complications.

Excess mortality is often used to estimate the effect of a certain crisis on the population. It is defined as the number of deaths during a crisis exceeding the expected number based on historical trends. Here, we calculated excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic for Croatia in the 2020-2021 period.

Background: The cornea, a vital component of the human eye, plays a crucial role in maintaining visual clarity. Understanding its ultrastructural organization and cell distribution is fundamental for elucidating corneal physiology and pathology. This study comprehensively examines the microarchitecture of the hydrated human cornea using contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).

Mental Health of Patients Hospitalized Due to Covid-19.

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed numerous challenges on the mental health of the population of each affected country. The mental health of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 was particularly at risk. The goal of this research was to examine the occurrence of mental disorders in such patients and what were the risk factors for poorer mental health during hospital treatment for COVID-19.

Retinal oximetry and microvascular assessment after hypertensive pregnancy complications.

Purpose: Women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are at increased risk of developing premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). The mechanisms behind this are not fully understood, but microvascular alterations have been documented in retinal arterioles and venules. The aim of this study was to use non-invasive retinal imaging to investigate the structural and functional properties of arterioles, venules and capillaries in this patient group.

The Ubiquitin-Associated and SH3 Domain-Containing Proteins (UBASH3) Family in Mammalian Development and Immune Response.

UBASH3A and UBASH3B are protein families of atypical protein tyrosine phosphatases that function as regulators of various cellular processes during mammalian development. As UBASH3A has only mild phosphatase activity, its regulatory effects are based on the phosphatase-independent mechanisms. On the contrary, UBASH3B has strong phosphatase activity, and the suppression of its receptor signalling is mediated by Syk and Zap-70 kinases.
