Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed catheter ablation success rates and complications in 591 patients with cardiac pacemakers compared to 7,393 patients without them, finding that patients with pacemakers were generally older and had more health issues.
  • One-year mortality rates were higher in the pacemaker group (2.4%) versus the non-pacemaker group (1.3%), along with increased risks of re-hospitalization and combined cardiovascular events.
  • Despite these increased risks, the rate of procedural success was high (98.8%) for those with pacemakers, and serious device-related complications were very low (0.4%).

Aim: Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) is a highly glycosylated protein in human plasma and one of the most abundant acute phase proteins in humans. Glycosylation plays a crucial role in its biological functions, and alterations in AGP N-glycome have been associated with various diseases and inflammatory conditions. However, large-scale studies of AGP N-glycosylation in the general population are lacking.

Article Synopsis
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are closely linked, with obesity playing a significant role in the development of both conditions through various mechanisms.
  • OSA can lead to weight gain and has a reciprocal relationship with diabetes, exacerbating its effects on the body, particularly through issues like intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation.
  • There’s a growing need for research into the pathways connecting MetS and OSA, especially as new medications emerge that target obesity to improve patient outcomes.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular healthcare in Croatia remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to compare the utilization and provision of cardiovascular services during the pre-pandemic (2017-2019) and pandemic (2020-2021) periods, leveraging nationwide data from the Croatian Health Insurance Fund, which covers 95% of all insurance claims in the country. Our findings reveal that while the use of coronary angiographies decreased during the pandemic, there was a notable increase in the utilization of advanced heart failure treatment modalities and percutaneous coronary interventions, particularly in the context of acute myocardial infarction.

Faculty of Medicine, University of Montenegro, Podgorica, Montenegro; Department of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology Section, Clinical Center of Montenegro, Podgorica, Montenegro. Electronic address:

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a spectrum of clinically heterogenous forms of monogenic diabetes mellitus characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance, onset at a young age, and absence of pancreatic islets autoimmunity. This rare form of hyperglycemia, with clinical features overlapping with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, has 14 subtypes with differences in prevalence and complications occurrence which tailor therapeutic approach. MODY phenotypes differ based on the gene involved, gene penetrance and expressivity.

This cross-sectional study compared plain language summaries (PLSs) from medical and non-medical organizations regarding conclusiveness, readability and textual characteristics. All Cochrane (medical PLSs, n = 8638) and Campbell Collaboration and International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (non-medical PLSs, n = 163) PLSs of latest versions of systematic reviews published until 10 November 2022 were analysed. PLSs were classified into three conclusiveness categories (conclusive, inconclusive and unclear) using a machine learning tool for medical PLSs and by two experts for non-medical PLSs.

This study aimed to analyze the clinical significance of signal shadowing during intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT)-assisted vitreoretinal surgery caused by vitreoretinal instruments, tissue dyes, and vitreous substitutes, and to objectively quantify its impact on iOCT imaging. This is a retrospective observational study of postoperative image analysis from one hundred seventeen (117) patients who underwent iOCT-assisted vitrectomy. The image data were divided into three groups: vitreoretinal instruments, tissue dyes, and vitreous substitutes.

ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a life-threatening emergency that can result in cardiac structural complications without timely revascularization. A retrospective study from the National Inpatient Sample included all patients with a diagnosis of STEMI between 2016 and 2020. Primary outcomes of interest were in-hospital mortality, length of stay (LoS), and healthcare costs for patients with and without structural complications.

Purpose: Women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are at increased risk of developing premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). The mechanisms behind this are not fully understood, but microvascular alterations have been documented in retinal arterioles and venules. The aim of this study was to use non-invasive retinal imaging to investigate the structural and functional properties of arterioles, venules and capillaries in this patient group.

UBASH3A and UBASH3B are protein families of atypical protein tyrosine phosphatases that function as regulators of various cellular processes during mammalian development. As UBASH3A has only mild phosphatase activity, its regulatory effects are based on the phosphatase-independent mechanisms. On the contrary, UBASH3B has strong phosphatase activity, and the suppression of its receptor signalling is mediated by Syk and Zap-70 kinases.

Clin Res Cardiol

October 2024

Department of Cardiology, Angiology, Haemostaseology and Medical Intensive Care, University Medical Centre Mannheim (UMM), Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, European Center for AngioScience (ECAS), and German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) Partner Site Heidelberg/Mannheim, Theodor-Kutzer-Ufer 1-3, 68167, Mannheim, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Interventional left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is effective for patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) who can't use long-term blood thinners, especially those with a history of stroke.
  • A study from the LAARGE registry found that LAAO was similarly effective and safe for stroke patients compared to those without a stroke history, with high success rates and low complication rates in both groups.
  • The results suggest that LAAO could be a viable option for secondary prevention in high-risk AF patients, showing no significant differences in risk of death or stroke between those with and without prior strokes.
