Long-term use of topical prostaglandins might initiate chronic conjunctival inflammation, leading to poor outcomes of glaucoma surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunoexpression pattern of HSP70, CTGF, SNAIL, aSMA, cMYB, and HIFa in the conjunctiva, episclera, and deep sclera in patients with glaucoma undergoing deep sclerectomy in order to establish an association between staining intensities and prostaglandin F2 (PGF2) treatment. Double immunofluorescence (HSP70, CTGF, SNAIL, aSMA, cMYB, and HIFa) was performed on conjunctiva, episclera, and deep sclera samples, which were obtained from 23 patients treated with PGF2 and 8 patients without PGF2 treatment.

Objective: Can mobile app intervention via push notifications increase adherence to exercise and reduce disability and pain after a whiplash injury?

Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with concealed allocation, blinding of some assessors, and an intention-to-treat analysis. Participants who sustained whiplash injury at most 3 months prior were divided into active and control groups. Both groups completed a two-part physiotherapist-supervised physical therapy program (3-week break in between, ten sessions each, 5x/week).

Racial and ethnic minorities have been disproportionally burdened by hospitalization and death due to COVID-19. Participation of individuals of diverse races and ethnicities in clinical trials according to study-level characteristics of randomized controlled trials (RCT) that test effectiveness of COVID-19 drugs could be insightful for future researchers. The objective of this scoping review was to describe frequency of race and ethnicity reported as demographic variables and specific reporting of race and ethnicity according to COVID-19 RCT characteristics.

Elucidation of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) represents one of the most important methods in biomedical research. Recently, PPIs have started to be exploited for drug discovery purposes and have thus attracted much attention from both the academic and pharmaceutical sectors. We previously developed a sensitive method, Split Intein-Mediated Protein Ligation (SIMPL), for detecting binary PPIs via irreversible splicing of the interacting proteins being investigated.

Autophagy markers expression pattern in developing liver of the yotari (dab1) mice and humans.

Acta Histochem

December 2024

Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, School of Medicine, University of Split School of Medicine, Šoltanska 2A, Split 21000, Croatia. Electronic address:

Autophagy plays an important role in the physiology and pathology of the liver. Several negative autophagy regulators have been discovered, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), mediated by activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. Disabled-1 (Dab1) is one of the mediating adaptor factors of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathways.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a severe hypertensive pregnancy disorder characterized by endothelial dysfunction, placental ischemia and oxidative stress; however, reliable non-invasive biomarkers for early detection are limited. In this study, untargeted solid-phase microextraction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS) was used to analyze volatile organic compounds in the urine of 45 women with PE and 46 healthy controls. Among the 29 metabolites identified, hexadecanal-a product of lipid peroxidation and sphingolipid metabolism-was found to be the most significant, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Precision medicine is emerging in cancer treatment, particularly for advanced ccRCC, and there’s a need for new predictive biomarkers and treatments.
  • This study investigates inversin as a potential prognostic factor by comparing its expression in ccRCC tumors and normal kidney tissues, finding that lower levels of inversin are linked to worse survival outcomes.
  • Additionally, the study reveals that inversin's role and its interactome partners relate to tumor differentiation, immune response, and metastasis, highlighting their potential as markers for ccRCC prognosis.

During pregnancy, significant cardiovascular changes occur to accommodate fetal growth, and catestatin may play a role in these changes. Evidence suggests that catestatin, a pleiotropic sympathoinhibitory peptide, is involved in multiple cardiovascular pathologies, including hypertensive disorders. The objective of this study was to compare serum catestatin levels between first-trimester pregnant women and non-pregnant women, aiming to investigate catestatin's role in blood pressure regulation during early pregnancy.

Resting heart rate assessed within clinical practice demonstrates no prognostic relevance for defibrillator recipients in the German DEVICE registry.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Division of Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care, cardiac Neuro- and Electrophysiology Research Consortium (cNEP), EVK Düsseldorf, Kirchfeldstr. 40, 40217, Düsseldorf, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of resting heart rate (RHR) on patients with heart failure who received implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) or cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillators (CRT-Ds), specifically examining RHRs above and below 70 bpm.
  • A total of 1589 patients were analyzed, and results showed that one-year all-cause mortality and major cardiovascular events were similar between those with RHR ≤ 70 bpm and > 70 bpm.
  • However, patients with RHR > 70 bpm had higher rates of all-cause hospital admissions, mainly due to non-cardiovascular events, indicating potential increased risks associated with a higher RHR.

Food-drug interactions (FDIs) are pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic changes in drug effects caused by the presence of specific foods. To identify and prevent FDIs, pharmacists, alongside other healthcare professionals, should possess a certain level of knowledge. This study aimed to assess knowledge of FDIs among Croatian pharmacists.

Article Synopsis
  • A maximal apnoea poses significant challenges to the body, impacting arterial blood gases and requiring complex responses from multiple physiological systems like blood pressure and cerebral blood flow.
  • Previous research has largely concentrated on cardiovascular responses during maximal apnoea, with limited exploration into respiratory muscle responses and respiratory mechanics.
  • This review suggests that respiratory muscles may fatigue after maximal apnoea and proposes that elite divers may possess greater fatigue resistance, which could contribute to their success; it also highlights the need for further studies on the long-term health effects of apnoea diving.

With the rapid development of the pharmaceutical industry and constant growth of drug usage, ecopharmacovigilance (EPV) has emerged as a way of coping with and minimizing the effects that drugs have on the environment. EPV concerns and describes unwanted effects that the use of a specific drug could have on the environment. The US, EU and Cananda are the improving position of EPV, both in legislation and practice.

Acutely decompensated heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation worldwide, with a significant majority of these cases attributed to congestion. Although congestion is commonly mistaken for volume overload, evidence suggests that decompensation can occur without significant water accumulation, being attributed to volume redistribution. Yet, the distinction between intravascular and extravascular congestion in heart failure often blurs, as patients frequently exhibit overlapping features of both, and as patients may transition between phenotypes over time.

  • The study analyzed the clinical characteristics of female Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) patients from the European Sleep Apnoea Database, using data from 9,710 participants.
  • Four distinct clusters or phenotypes of women with OSA were identified, each with varying age, BMI, comorbidities, and severity of sleep apnea.
  • The findings suggest that gender-specific phenotyping could lead to better risk assessment and tailored treatment options for women with OSA.
