Position-Induced Controllable Growth of Vertically Oriented Graphene Using Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition.

Because the morphology of vertically oriented graphene (VG) synthesized by the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition process determines the application performance of VG, morphology control is always an important part of the research. A concise correspondence between plasma and the morphology of VG is the key to investigating the morphology control of VG, which is still under research. In this study, a simple but effective parameter, position, is used to grow VG, by which the continuous morphology evolution of VG is realized.

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Collaborative Innovation Center of Extreme Optics, Shanxi University Taiyuan 030006 China

Demands for highly deformable and responsive intelligent actuators are increasing rapidly. Herein, a photothermal bilayer actuator consisting of a photothermal-responsive composite hydrogel layer and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer is presented. The photothermal-responsive composite hydrogel is prepared by compositing hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and the photothermal material graphene oxide (GO) with the thermal-responsive hydrogel poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM).

Background: In individuals with schizophrenia, inflammation is associated with depression, somatic comorbidity and reduced quality of life. Physical exercise is known to reduce inflammation in other populations, but we have only limited knowledge in the field of schizophrenia. We assessed inflammatory markers in plasma samples from individuals with schizophrenia participating in an exercise intervention randomized controlled trial.

Mesoporous Cobalt Oxide (CoO) Nanowires with Different Aspect Ratios for High Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

February 2023

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Collaborative Innovation Center of Extreme Optics, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China.

Cobalt oxide (CoO) nanowires have been broadly explored as advanced pseudocapacitive materials owing to their impressive theoretical gravimetric capacity. However, the traditional method of compositing with conductive nanoparticles to improve their poor conductivity will unpredictably lead to a decrease in actual capacity. The amelioration of the aspect ratio of the CoO nanowires may affect the pathway of electron conduction and ion diffusion, thereby improving the electrochemical performances.

Highly Sensitive and Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors Based on Vertical Graphene and Micro-Pyramidal Dielectric Layer.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

February 2023

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Collaborative Innovation Center of Extreme Optics, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China.

Many practical applications require flexible high-sensitivity pressure sensors. However, such sensors are difficult to achieve using conventional materials. Engineering the morphology of the electrodes and the topography of the dielectrics has been demonstrated to be effective in boosting the sensing performance of capacitive pressure sensors.

Introduction: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) may improve cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and mental health. The current observer-blinded RCT investigates the sparsely studied efficiency of HIIT in reducing psychotic and non-psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia and complements previous studies by investigating whether symptom reduction following HIIT is associated with, putatively partly mediated by, increased VOmax.

Methods: Participants (outpatients meeting diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia) were randomized to HIIT ( = 43) or a comparison group performing low-intensity active video gaming (AVG) to control for social interaction ( = 39).

Purpose: To investigate the changes in the tear cytokine profile of patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) treated with eyelid warming and to correlate these changes with clinical parameters for dry eye disease (DED).

Methods: Seventy patients with MGD were included and treated with the warming of eyelids. Of these, 61 still used the treatment three months after baseline, while 48 completed the whole treatment period of six months.

Vertical Graphene Canal Mesh for Strain Sensing with a Supereminent Resolution.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

July 2022

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Collaborative Innovation Center of Extreme Optics, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China.

The development of microstrain sensors offers significant prospects in diverse applications, such as microrobots, intelligent human-computer interaction, health monitoring, and medical rehabilitation. Among strain sensor materials, vertical graphene (VG) has demonstrated considerable potential as a resistive material; however, VG-based strain sensors with high resolution are yet to be developed. In addition, the detection mechanism of VG has not been extensively investigated.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become the third leading cause of global death. Insufficiency in early diagnosis and treatment of COPD, especially COPD exacerbations, leads to a tremendous economic burden and medical costs. A cost-effective and timely prevention requires decentralized point-of-care diagnostics at patients' residences at affordable prices.

Background: Some physically active people exercise compulsively, which can be associated with several mental health challenges. Fitness instructors are considered important role models for an active, healthy lifestyle; yet little is known about their exercise motives and mental health. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of compulsive exercise and mental health challenges, and their interaction, in fitness instructors.

Optimal foraging models predict that individual animals will optimize net energy gain by intensifying forage activity and/or reducing forage energy cost. Then, the free distribution model predicts an animal's distribution in a patchy landscape will match the distribution of the resources. If not modified by other factors, such patterns may be expected to be particularly explicit in variable and extreme, forage-limited, and patchy environments, notably alpine and Arctic environments during winter.

Background: Numerous translocations of Eurasian beavers have occurred with little implementation of standardised health screening. Pre-release health screening enables the selection of individuals with the best survival prospects and reduces potential health risks, but this is by-passed during unofficial releases. Beaver reintroduction to Britain has been haphazard and currently disjunctive populations of varying status exist.

Background: Body image is considered a core issue for public health and associates with university students' overall health. Due to positive associations between exercise and body image, it has been suggested that students within an exercise science program might be more body appreciative compared to other students. On the other hand, the strong societal idealization of the athletic body may expose them to a pressure of having a specific body appearance, which may result in unfavorable health consequences.

Oxygen-Assisted Trimming Growth of Ultrahigh Vertical Graphene Films in a PECVD Process for Superior Energy Storage.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

March 2021

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Collaborative Innovation Center of Extreme Optics, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China.

Combining the advantages of a three-dimensional structure with intrinsic properties of graphene, vertical graphene (VG) synthesized by the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process has shown great promise to be applied to energy-storage electrodes. However, the practical application of the VG electrodes suffers from the limited height, which is mostly in a scale of few hundreds of nanometers, as shown in the previous studies. The reason for the unacceptable thin VG film deposition is believed to be the height saturation, stemming from the inevitable confluence of the VG flakes along with the deposition time.
