Neurodevelopmental disorder with visual defects and brain anomalies (NEDVIBA) is a recently described genetic condition caused by de novo missense HK1 variants. Phenotypic data is currently limited; only seven patients have been published to date. This descriptive case series of a further four patients with de novo missense HK1 variants, alongside integration of phenotypic data with the reported cases, aims to improve our understanding of the associated phenotype.

Introduction: Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker more specific for bacterial infection and responds quicker than other commonly used biomarkers such as C reactive protein, but is not routinely used in the National Health Service (NHS). Studies mainly in adults show that using PCT to guide clinicians may reduce antibiotic use, reduce hospital stay, with no associated adverse effects such as increased rates of hospital re-admission, incomplete treatment of infections, relapse or death. A review conducted for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends further research on PCT testing to guide antibiotic use in children.

Counting intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) is a key part of the assessment of duodenal biopsies. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for CD3 can aid identification of lymphocytes in this context, but it is not evident that counts on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and CD3 are comparable. This study aimed to compare the IEL counts in duodenal biopsies using H&E stains and CD3 IHC, and to examine the interobserver variability.

Introduction: Care home residents are at increased risk of infections and antibiotic prescription. Reduced antibiotic use from fewer infections would improve quality of life. The robiotics to educe nfections iar home reident (PRINCESS) trial aims to determine the efficacy and investigate mechanisms of daily probiotics on antibiotic use and incidence of infections in care home residents.

15 different antibiotics were individually mixed with commercially available calcium sulfate bone void filler beads. The antibiotics were: amikacin, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, colistamethate sodium, daptomycin, gentamicin, imipenem/cilastatin, meropenem, nafcillin, rifampicin, teicoplanin, tobramycin and vancomycin. The efficacy of specific released antibiotics was validated by zone of inhibition (ZOI) testing using a modified Kirby⁻Bauer disk diffusion method against common periprosthetic joint infection pathogens.

To gather current experience in Occlutech ASD device retrieval, to determine whether snaring is an effective technique and to highlight alternative retrieval techniques; METHODS AND RESULTS: United Kingdom and European Occlutech ASD device implanters reported their experience in dealing with device embolization and retrieval. Six operators reported 12 retrieval cases. Retrieval was successful in 92% (11/12), although in most cases it was not straightforward and required multiple attempts using different techniques and equipment.
