Recent reports of insect decline have raised concerns regarding population responses of ecologically important groups, such as insect pollinators. Additionally, how population trends vary across pollinator taxonomic groups and degree of specialization is unclear. The complexities of non-target effects of registered pesticides on biocontrol agents (BCAs) hinder the optimization of integrated pest management programs in agriculture. The wealth of literature on BCA-pesticide compatibility allows for the investigation of factors influencing BCA susceptibility and the generalized impacts of different pesticides. We conducted a meta-analysis using 2088 observations from 122 published articles to assess non-target effects on two phytoseiid species (Neoseiulus californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis), a parasitoid (Encarsia formosa), and two microbial BCAs (Trichoderma harzianum and Metarhizium anisopliae).

The investigation of spatial heterogeneity within the thylakoid membrane (TM) proteins has gained increasing attention in photosynthetic research. This review aims to compile sparse information on the ecology of freshwater heterotrophic euglenoids and synthesize the main phenomena and hypotheses from published results. Apparently, heterotrophic euglenoids play a very important role in the nutrient flow of water ecosystems and are irreplaceable heterotrophic contributors in benthic communities, as their total biomass is by far the largest among heterotrophic flagellates. Even though they are obviously a very crucial part of the diversity of freshwater heterotrophic protists, and likely the most represented (in terms of biovolume) group of heterotrophic flagellates, there have been only a few attempts to elucidate their ecological preferences, roles, niches, and importance.

Monitoring haemosporidian parasites in birds is essential to comprehend the dynamics of avian malaria, a disease that significantly affects bird populations worldwide. This study concentrated on the prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in 198 specimens from two subspecies of the Eurasian bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), aiming to explore the genetic diversity and species richness of haemosporidian fauna across the host populations. By utilizing next-generation amplicon high-throughput sequencing (NGS), we observed a marked increase in the detection of haemosporidian diversity, revealing cryptic variants and species previously unidentified by Sanger sequencing.

Determination of melatonin by potentiometric stripping analysis using sensor based on boron-doped diamond electrodes.

A three-electrode screen-printed sensor with heavily doped microcrystalline boron-doped diamond electrodes grown by chemical vapor deposition on alumina substrates was used to determine the concentration of melatonin by constant current potentiometric stripping analysis. This paper provides a detailed examination of the irreversible oxidation behavior of melatonin by cyclic voltammetry at a boron-doped diamond electrode. The relationship between the current response and the square root of the scan rate confirmed a diffusion-controlled oxidation process.

The primary function of spermatozoa is to fertilize the oocyte, which depends on their motility and is directly associated with their metabolic state. The oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of spermatozoa reflects the respiratory capacity of sperm mitochondria under various physiological conditions and is an essential marker of sperm quality. We determined the OCR of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) sperm using two respirometry methods: the conventionally used polarographic method with a Clark-type electrode and fluorometric assay with an Oxo Dish optochemical oxygen sensor.

Pikeperch (Sander Lucioperca) belongs to main predatory fish species in freshwater bodies throughout Europe playing the key role by reducing planktivorous fish abundance. Two size classes of the young-of-the-year (YOY) pikeperch are known in Europe and North America.
