Drowning is currently the second leading cause of injury-related death for children 1-4 years of age in the United States and is the leading cause of death worldwide for boys ages 5-14 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies it as a public health threat and advocates for reducing drowning deaths by understanding geographical, cultural, and societal risk factors. To these three we added a fourth: historical studies.

Myocarditis in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, 1880-1939.

From 1920 to 1940 in Minnehaha County there was an apparent striking increase in the incidence of fatal myocarditis and chronic myocarditis. Based on an analysis of the interment records of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, word frequency studies in two prominent American medical journals and a general review of related medical publications, we explore this increase.

Background: Telehealth has been proposed as one strategy to improve the quality of time-sensitive sepsis care in rural emergency departments (EDs). The purpose of this study was to measure the association between telehealth-supplemented ED (tele-ED) care, health care costs, and clinical outcomes among patients with sepsis in rural EDs.

Methods: Cohort study using Medicare fee-for-service claims data for beneficiaries treated for sepsis in rural EDs between February 1, 2017, and September 30, 2019.

Waitlist and posttransplant outcomes of pregnancy-related acute liver failure in the United States.

Data on the liver transplant (LT) outcomes of women with acute liver failure (ALF) due to liver diseases unique to pregnancy (P-ALF) are limited. Using United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) data (1987-2021), we analyzed waitlist and post-LT outcomes of ALF in women of childbearing age comparing P-ALF versus ALF due to liver diseases not unique to pregnancy. Baseline characteristics were compared between groups at the time of listing for LT.

Pharmacotherapies for Portal Hypertension: Current Status and Expanding Indications.

Purpose: Non-selective beta blockers remain pharmacotherapy of choice for prevention of first episode of variceal bleeding (primary prevention) and for prevention of its recurrence after initial hemostasis (secondary prophylaxis). This review will update the current and emerging pharmacological therapies for portal hypertension.

Recent Findings: Data have emerged on carvedilol in preventing hepatic decompensation and improving patient survival among patients with clinically significant portal hypertension.

There is a paucity of studies describing the neurodevelopment impact of PCE in infancy. The Mullen Scale of Early Learning (MSEL) is a cognitive screening tool that can be used from birth to 68 months and includes language and motor domains.

Assessment of Swallowing Function in Patients with Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma in High vs. Low Dose Cisplatin.

Cisplatin-based therapies are standard-of-care for advanced-stage head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Treatment regimens include 3 weeks of high-dose bolus cisplatin or 6-7 weeks of low-dose weekly cisplatin, both with concurrent radiation. The effects of cisplatin dosage on swallowing function warrant further study.
