Pregnant and parenting people (PPP) experience complex challenges when seeking recovery from substance use disorders (SUD). Using a community-based participatory research approach, researchers partnered with PPP seeking recovery from SUD to explore supports needed in their communities. Findings are reported in adherence with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research.

The regulation of vascular tone by perivascular tissues is a complex interplay of various paracrine factors. Here, we investigate the anti-contractile effect of skeletal muscle surrounding the femoral and carotid arteries and its underlying mechanisms. Using male and female Wistar rats, we demonstrated that serotonin, phenylephrine, and U-46619 induced a concentration-dependent vasoconstrictor response in femoral artery rings.

Undergraduate neuroscience researchers and educators have a vital voice in working with policymakers to raise public awareness and increase support and funding for neuroscience. While there are many avenues and opportunities to become involved in neuroscience advocacy, finding the most effective training strategies, resources, and opportunities for involvement can sometimes be difficult and overwhelming. To address this challenge and inform faculty of science advocacy opportunities for undergraduates, we organized a mini-symposium at the 2023 Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) Workshop.

Introduction: The health of children and adolescents, particularly children of military families, is instrumental for military departments; yet, there has not been an examination on the overall physical health status, or access to health care, among children of military families compared to children of civilian families.

Materials And Methods: This study used the 2020-2021 National Survey of Children's Health, children aged 0-17 years, to examine the association between military status of the caregiver of the child and the child's health status, financial stability, and health care access via health insurance coverage (n = 90,711 children). Bivariate analyses used Pearson's chi-squared tests and were weighted to be nationally representative.

Background: Robotic retromuscular ventral hernia repair (rRMVHR) potentially combines the best features of open and minimally invasive VHR: myofascial release with abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) with the lower wound morbidity of laparoscopic VHR. Proliferation of this technique has outpaced the data supporting this claim. We report 2-year outcomes of the first randomized controlled trial of oRMVHR vs rRMVHR.

Introduction: This study aims to examine the association between provider attributes, including network (patient panel size, degree-number of peer connections, and community size- number of a closely connected group of peers) and individual attributes (travel distance, specialties, and rural practice), and a predominant (most visited) provider.

Methods: This study utilized South Carolina's Medicaid claims data during 2014 to 2018, focusing on live births in hospitals. Samples were limited to pregnant women continuously enrolled in Medicaid throughout pregnancy.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between rurality and challenges to school success: lack of school engagement, school absenteeism, and repeated grade. Cross-sectional data from the 2020 to 2021 National Survey of Children's Health, children ages 6 to 17 ( = 42,089), was used. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between residence rurality and each outcome of interest.

Sharing neuroimaging datasets enables reproducibility, education, tool development, and new discoveries. Neuroimaging from many studies are publicly available, providing a glimpse into progressive disorders and human development. In contrast, few stroke studies are shared, and these datasets lack longitudinal sampling of functional imaging, diffusion imaging, as well as the behavioral and demographic data that encourage novel applications.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used to reduce pain and inflammation in over 30 million individuals daily. Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) associated with NSAID consumption has been well documented in gastric and duodenal bleeding; however, NSAID-associated GIB distal to the duodenum lacks extensive documentation. This report highlights small bowel occult bleeding related to NSAID use in a patient with a surgical history of robotic total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis completed 1 year prior.

Article Synopsis
  • A new usage for silver collagen oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) dressings combined with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been established, aiming to improve wound care.
  • An in-person meeting with 7 healthcare providers sought to create guidelines regarding the effective use of these dressings in different clinical settings, leading to the development of consensus statements.
  • Recommendations support the use of these dressings for various wounds like traumatic and diabetic ulcers, but advise against their use in specific situations such as exposed organs or vessels, and in cases of certain patient sensitivities.

Left ventricular pressure overload (LVPO) can lead to heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and LV chamber stiffness (LV ) is a hallmark. This project tested the hypothesis that the development of HFpEF due to an LVPO stimulus will alter posttranscriptional regulation, specifically microRNAs (miRs). LVPO was induced in pigs ( = 9) by sequential ascending aortic cuff and age- and weight-matched pigs ( = 6) served as controls.

Objective: To estimate the association between maternal metformin use for the treatment of early gestational or pre-existing type 2 diabetes and preterm preeclampsia.

Methods: This is a planned secondary analysis of the MOMPOD study (Medical Optimization of Management of Overt Type 2 Diabetes in Pregnancy), a randomized trial comparing the effect of adding metformin with insulin treatment on composite neonatal outcome in singleton pregnancies with early gestational or type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomized at 11-23 weeks of gestation to 1,000 mg metformin twice daily or placebo until delivery.

Like other complex systems, medical education programs require a systematic continuous quality improvement (CQI) approach to drive effective improvement. Accreditation bodies in both undergraduate medical education (UME) and graduate medical education (GME) require programs to have effective CQI processes. Dashboards facilitate visualization and tracking of key metrics that impact medical education programming, thus driving excellence.

Half of adults in the United States have hypertension as defined by clinical practice guidelines. Interestingly, women are generally more likely to be aware of their hypertension and have their blood pressure controlled with treatment compared with men, yet hypertension-related mortality is greater in women. This may reflect the fact that the female sex remains underrepresented in clinical and basic science studies investigating the effectiveness of therapies and the mechanisms controlling blood pressure.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a significant lack of data on dialysis decision-making for patients with cirrhosis who are ineligible for transplants, prompting this study to explore RRT initiation processes, predictors, and outcomes.
  • The research involved evaluating 372 patients with acute kidney injury due to conditions like hepatorenal syndrome, revealing that those who received RRT had a median survival of 12.5 days, compared to just 2 days for those who didn't.
  • The study highlights that most patients receiving RRT had short-term mortality and intensive end-of-life care, and it emphasizes the need for better clinical processes for communication and decision-making regarding RRT in this vulnerable population.

Introduction: Behavioral and mental health conditions present significant challenges in the United States where access to care is limited. Family medicine physicians play a crucial role in addressing these challenges, often serving as frontline clinicians for behavioral and mental health conditions.

Methods: This study examined the current behavioral and mental health system in a predominantly rural 10-county region in the Southeastern United States through gap analysis in addition to a survey of preparedness and barriers among family medicine physicians in the region.

Article Synopsis
  • TGFβ-activated kinase-1 (TAK1) plays a role in both muscle growth (hypertrophy) and muscle loss (wasting), indicating its complex function in muscle health.
  • A study investigated how TAK1's phosphorylation affects different muscle models, showing varying phosphorylation patterns in Texel sheep (muscle growth) and cancer-induced cachexia (muscle loss), specifically noting differences in proteins like p38, p90RSK, and HSP27.
  • In C2C12 muscle cells, reduced TAK1 phosphorylation initially promotes muscle growth but prolonged inhibition leads to muscle failure, highlighting the importance of timing in TAK1 activation for regulating muscle-related processes.
