Novel Association of WNK4 Gene, Ala589Ser Polymorphism in Essential Hypertension, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Malaysia.

J Diabetes Res

June 2017

Genetic Research Group, Department of Biomedical Science, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

With-no-lysine (K) Kinase-4 (WNK4) consisted of unique serine and threonine protein kinases, genetically associated with an autosomal dominant form of hypertension. Argumentative consequences have lately arisen on the association of specific single nucleotide polymorphisms of WNK4 gene and essential hypertension (EHT). The aim of this study was to determine the association of Ala589Ser polymorphism of WNK4 gene with essential hypertensive patients in Malaysia.

Objectives: As energy consumption during orthotics walking has main role in rehabilitation of walking in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), the aim of this study was comparison between new medial linkage orthosis (new MLO) and isocentric reciprocating gait orthosis (IRGO) on energy consumption in paraplegic patients.

Methods: Four people with motor incomplete SCI (mean age 34.5 years, mass 73 kg and height 175 cm with injury levels ranging from T8-T12) participated in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the differences in vowel production between deaf children with cochlear implants and normal-hearing children.
  • Participants included 20 children with congenital hearing loss and cochlear implants and a matched control group of 20 normal-hearing children.
  • Results indicated that children with cochlear implants had increased first formant values, suggesting they may overarticulate due to a lack of auditory feedback, leading to a more centralized vowel space.

Study Design: A feasibility study on the effect of a new reciprocating orthosis on specific gait parameters for use by people with spinal cord injury.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to design and develop a new medial linkage orthosis (MLO) mechanism incorporating a reciprocating motion and to determine its efficacy in improving specific spatiotemporal, kinematic and kinetic parameters while ambulating when worn by healthy subjects. This was achieved via the use of a lower limb paralysis simulator (LLPS).

Introduction: The relationship between handicaps because of voice disorders and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) severity was examined.

Method: Fifty-two Persian women with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) were examined by two dentists in separate sessions and the assessment protocol of the Dentistry Clinic of Tehran University of Medical Sciences was filled by both dentists and finally they gave their opinion separately about the existence of TMD and categorized the severity of TMD as mild, moderate, and severe. To assess perceived disability resulting from voice disorders in TMD patients, the voice handicap index (VHI) questionnaire was used.

Background: Spinal cord injury patients walk with a flexed trunk when using reciprocating gait orthoses. Reduction of trunk flexion during ambulation may produce an improvement in gait parameters for reciprocating gait orthosis users.

Objectives: To investigate the effect on kinematics and temporal-spatial parameters when spinal cord injury patients ambulate with an advanced reciprocating gait orthosis while wearing a thoracolumbosacral orthosis to provide trunk extension.

Article Synopsis
  • Gait training enhances walking performance in spinal cord-injured (SCI) patients, and powered hip orthoses (PHO) are an innovative approach for rehabilitation.
  • Four SCI patients underwent gait evaluation before and after 10 weeks of training with a PHO to assess changes in walking speed, step length, and hip joint kinematics.
  • Results showed improved walking speed and step length, reduced compensatory motions, and a trend towards increased hip range of motion, indicating that PHOs could be beneficial for SCI rehabilitation.
