Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre, Division of Cancer Research, School of Medicine, University of Dundee, Dundee, UK; Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences and Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA.

Non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) are most commonly characterized by age-related loss of homeostasis and/or by cumulative exposures to environmental factors, which lead to low-grade sustained generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), chronic inflammation and metabolic imbalance. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 (NRF2) is a basic leucine-zipper transcription factor that regulates the cellular redox homeostasis. NRF2 controls the expression of more than 250 human genes that share in their regulatory regions a cis-acting enhancer termed the antioxidant response element (ARE).

Cerebral palsy, other neurological and motor deficiencies, intellectual disability, and various degrees of cognitive and behavioral deficiencies all result from neonatal critical diseases. We investigated psychomotor development in 20 children with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), and as newborns often have multiple comorbidities, the following as well: HIE with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), infections, hypo and hyperglycemia and hypocalcemia.

Article Synopsis
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can greatly impact patients' quality of life due to its association with psychological issues like anxiety and depression, often intensified by stigmatization related to physical appearance.
  • A study involving 135 HS patients from 22 dermatology clinics in Europe found significant levels of perceived stigmatization, which correlated with disease duration, itchiness, and depression symptoms.
  • The research emphasizes the need for comprehensive management of HS, including addressing psychological well-being and access to mental health support for better patient outcomes.

In forensic investigation, determining the time and cause of death becomes challenging, especially in cases where the remains are found in advanced decomposition, rendering traditional toxicological samples unavailable or unreliable. Entomotoxicology, an emerging methodology within forensic science, leverages insect specimens collected from cadavers as alternative toxicological samples. Several laboratory and field research studies have highlighted the efficacy in detecting various drugs, toxins, and elements absorbed by insects feeding on cadaveric tissues, even at low concentrations.

Background: The safety and efficacy of carotid artery stenting (CAS) can be affected by certain technical and anatomical factors. However, it is not known whether the use of a dual-layer micromesh stent (DLMS) with a low-crossing profile could reduce the risks associated with complex vascular anatomies during CAS.

Methods: This study involved 1965 asymptomatic or symptomatic carotid artery stenosis patients who received the Roadsaver DLMS during CAS, as part of a prospective, multicenter observational ROADSAVER study, conducted from January 2018 to February 2021.

Aim: The sulfhydryl (thiols) group of glutathione plays an important role in the neutralization of foreign organic compounds and the reduction in peroxides. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the concentration of sulfhydryl groups in the gingival tissue of healthy individuals and those with gingivitis or periodontitis, and to examine the differences between these groups.

Material And Methods: To assess the concentration of sulfhydryl groups (thiols) in the gingival tissue of healthy individuals and those with gingivitis or periodontitis, we used spectrophotometric analysis using dithionitrobenzoate (DTNB) as a reagent to measure the accessible sulfhydryl groups present in gingival tissue proteins.

PJU University Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of "St. Cyril and Methodius", Skopje, RN Macedonia.

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are frequent causes of death and disability in neonates. This study included newborns between January 2021 and July 2022 at the University Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, Skopje. Up to date criteria for HIE/RDS for term and for preterm infants as well for the severity of HIE/RDS were used in a comprehensive analysis of cranial ultrasonography, neurological status, neonatal infections, Apgar score, bradycardia and hypotension, X-ray of the lungs, FiO2, acid-base status, assisted ventilation and use of surfactant.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a substantial complication of type 2 diabetes (T2D), presenting challenges in chronic kidney disease (CKD) management. In addition to traditional and recent therapies, including angiotensin, converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, the evolution of antihyperglycemic treatments has introduced a promising agent, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) for the management of DKD. GLP-1RAs enhance insulin release and reduce glucagon release, offering a novel approach to DKD management.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the bidirectional relationship between parenting stress and child maltreatment, revealing that earlier parenting stress can predict later instances of child maltreatment.
  • - Data from two longitudinal studies involving 484 caregivers in six countries and 772 caregivers in the U.S. supports the findings that both high parenting stress and child maltreatment can exacerbate each other over time.
  • - The research suggests incorporating these dynamics into parenting intervention programs, although it acknowledges potential measurement biases as a limitation.

Primary care healthcare professionals (PCHPs) are pivotal in managing chronic diseases and present a unique opportunity for nutrition-related disease prevention. However, the active involvement of PCHPs in nutritional care is limited, influenced by factors like insufficient education, lack of resources, and time constraints. In this position paper The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) promotes the active engagement of PCHPs in nutritional care.

The high recurrence rate and invasive diagnostic and monitoring methods in bladder cancer (BCa) clinical management require the development of new non-invasive molecular tools for early detection, particularly for low-grade and low-stage BCa as well as for risk stratification. By using an in-solution digestion method and label-free data-independent LC-MS/MS coupled with ion mobility, we profiled the BCa tissues from initiation to advanced stages and confidently identified and quantified 1619 proteins (≥2 peptides). A statistically significant difference in abundance (Anova ≤ 0.

Even though nephrology has made much progress, reducing the progression of the chronic kidney disease remains, in fact, one of the biggest challenges. Long before the renal replacement therapy (RRT), it was known that limiting the protein could help almost all uremia symptoms. Although it was proposed as early as the 1960s, it only became widely used in the 1980s.

Transient neonatal myasthenia gravis (TNMG) is a neuromuscular disorder that occurs in infants born from mothers with myasthenia gravis (MG) due to transplacental transfer of antibodies against the acetylcholine receptor. TNMG is a rare form occurring in 10-15% of infants born from mothers with MG. We present a case of a newborn with TNMG with generalized hypotonia and respiratory distress.

Although rare, hereditary diseases, such as autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and Fabry disease (FD) may significantly progress towards severe nephropathy. It is crucial to characterize it accurately, predict the course of the illness and estimate treatment effectiveness. A huge effort has been undertaken to find reliable biomarkers that might be useful for an early prevention of the disease progression and/or any invasive diagnostic procedures.
