Permethrin (PERM) is a member of the class I family of synthetic pyrethroids. Human use has shown that it affects different systems, with wide health dysfunctions. Our aim was to determine bioenergetics, neuroinflammation and morphology changes, as redox markers after subacute exposure to PERM in rats.

Joint cartilage damage affects 10-12% of the world's population. Medical treatments improve the short-term quality of life of affected individuals but lack a long-term effect due to injury progression into fibrocartilage. The use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is one of the most promising strategies for tissue regeneration due to their ability to be isolated, expanded and differentiated into metabolically active chondrocytes to achieve long-term restoration.

Streptococcus pneumoniae colonizes the nasopharynx of children and the elderly but also kills millions worldwide yearly. The secondary bile acid metabolite deoxycholic acid (DoC) affects the viability of human pathogens but also plays multiple roles in host physiology. We assessed the antimicrobial activity of DoC and investigated its potential to eradicate S.

Recent evidence suggests that, in some foci, elimination of onchocerciasis from Africa may be feasible with mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin. To achieve continental elimination of transmission, mapping surveys will need to be conducted across all implementation units (IUs) for which endemicity status is currently unknown. Using boosted regression tree models with optimised hyperparameter selection, we estimated environmental suitability for onchocerciasis at the 5 × 5-km resolution across Africa.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is one of the more limiting complications to the quality of life of diabetes mellitus patients. Studies including cultured cells, animal models, and case-control studies highlight the role of human β-defensin-1 (hBD-1) in diabetes. This study assessed the association of hBD-1 gene () functional variations -52 G/A (rs1799946), -44 C/G (rs1800972) and -20 G/A (rs11362) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in order to investigate its effects on genetic susceptibility and progression to DKD in a Mexican population.

The study of power quality (PQ) has gained relevance over the years due to the increase in non-linear loads connected to the grid. Therefore, it is important to study the propagation of power quality disturbances (PQDs) to determine the propagation points in the grid, and their source of generation. Some papers in the state of the art perform the analysis of punctual measurements of a limited number of PQDs, some of them using high-cost commercial equipment.

Background: In light of the increasing trend in the global number of individuals affected by dementia and the lack of any available disease-modifying therapies, it is necessary to fully understand and quantify the global burden of dementia. This work aimed to estimate the proportion of dementia due to Down syndrome, Parkinson's disease, clinical stroke, and traumatic brain injury (TBI), globally and by world region, in order to better understand the contribution of clinical diseases to dementia prevalence.

Methods: Through literature review, we obtained data on the relative risk of dementia with each condition and estimated relative risks by age using a Bayesian meta-regression tool.

Background: Peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN) is increasingly considered as an alternative to central parenteral nutrition (CPN) given the higher cost and more frequent clinical complications associated with the latter. However, the assessment of potential risks and benefits of PPN in critically ill pediatric canine patients has not been extensively performed. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of short-term, hypocaloric PPN on weight loss, length of hospital stay, the incidence of complications, adverse effects, and mortality in critically ill pediatric canine patients.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity: An Update.

Medicina (Kaunas)

May 2021

Clinical and Research Laboratory (LACIUS, URS), Department of Chemical, Biological, and Agricultural Sciences (DC-QB), Division of Sciences and Engineering, University of Sonora, Navojoa 85880, Mexico.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is a clinical entity characterized by the absence of celiac disease and wheat allergy in patients that trigger reproducible symptomatic responses to gluten-containing foods consumption. Due to the lack of sensitive and reproducible biomarkers for NCGS diagnosis, placebo-controlled gluten challenges must be carried out for its diagnosis. The gluten challenges can be either double- or single-blind, for research or clinical practice purposes, respectively.

Distance learning is a rapidly spreading form of education worldwide and it plays a crucial role to provide access to millions of people in developing countries. However, the benefits of online learning extend far beyond and became increasingly popular also in medical schools, including veterinary medicine [1,2]. In these new teaching settings, high-quality, validated and easily accessible multimedia materials are of great importance, especially in specific fields, such as radiology, where graphic resources can greatly support learning [3].

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide and includes colon cancer (CC) and rectal cancer (RC). Regarding CC, the development of novel molecular biomarkers for the accurate diagnosis and prognosis, as well as the identification of novel targets for therapeutic intervention, are urgently needed. SRY-related high-mobility group box 9 (SOX9), a transcription factor, is involved in development, and has been associated with the progression of human cancer.

August 2021

Laboratory of Microbiology and Applied Biology, Faculty of Biology, Autonomous University of Sinaloa, Av. Universitarios, University City, 80013, Culiacan Rosales, Sinaloa, Mexico.

The continual increase in resistance to antibacterial drugs has become a major public health problem, and their indiscriminate use in agriculture, aquaculture, and the treatment of human and animal diseases has severely contributed to the occurrence and spread of multidrug resistance genes. This study phylogenetically characterized multidrug-resistant bacteria isolated from seafood cocktails. Seafood cocktail dishes from 20 establishments on public roads were sampled.

Recycled Mortars with Ceramic Aggregates. Pore Network Transmutation and Its Relationship with Physical and Mechanical Properties.

Materials (Basel)

March 2021

School of Engineering Mazatlan, Autonomous University of Sinaloa, Ave. Ejército Mexicano esq. Ave. Universidad s/n., Ciudad Universitaria, Fracc. Antiguo Aeropuerto, Mazatlán, Sinaloa 82017, Mexico.

The porosity of mortars with recycled ceramic aggregates (10, 20, 30, 50, and 100% as a replacement of natural aggregate) was evaluated and analyzed using three different techniques. The results of gas adsorption (N), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image analysis and open porosity allowed establishing the relationship between the recycled aggregate content and the porosity of these mortars, as well as the relationship between porosity and the physical and mechanical properties of the mortars: absorption, density, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, and drying shrinkage. Using the R coefficient and the equation typology as criteria, additional data such as Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area (N adsorption) established significant correlations with the mentioned properties; with SEM image analysis, no explanatory relationships could be established; and with open porosity, revealing relationships were established (R > 0.

Introduction: The diameter and area of the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) and the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) are of the main parameters analyzed in stereological studies of the kidney. However, there is no consensus about if the PCT and DCT should be considered circular or elliptical in shape.

Objective: To analyze if there are significant differences in the diameter and area of the PCT and DCT, depending on whether they are considered circular or elliptical.

Essential trace metal (Cu, Zn Cd, Pb, As, and Hg) concentrations were determined in blood of adult female, post-nesting olive ridley turtles Lepidochelys olivacea (n = 35) on Ceuta beach, Sinaloa, Mexico. Essential metals (Zn and Cu) analyzed were found in higher concentrations than toxic metals (Cd and Pb), while As and Hg concentrations were below the limits of detection (0.
